  • Gallagher's

    3220 E. Baseline Rd. #100 South Phoenix

    602-437-0981

Sports bars are a dime a dozen in every city in the U.S., so it’s hard for one to stand out from the pack. They all have sticky bars, ripped up barstools, cute-after-a-few-drinks bartenders, and TVs that are too often left on a channel no one wants to watch. If we ever had the opportunity to reinvent the wheel, the result would look a lot like Gallagher’s Sports Grill. There’s more for fans than a few tiny screens to stare at. Amenities include off-track betting windows, arcade games, trivia nights, karaoke, a posh outdoor patio complete with waterfall and breathtaking views, and 25 conveniently placed TVs broadcasting everything from the popular football and baseball games to sports with fewer fans, like bowling. The menu is on par too, including American standards like burgers, pizza, sandwiches, and grilled meats including baby back ribs and chicken fajitas. The best part? Gallagher’s has six locations spread throughout the Valley in South Phoenix, North Phoenix, Central Phoenix, Carefree, Chandler, and Peoria.

  • Aioli Gourmet Burgers

13730 W. Camelback Road, Suite A Litchfield Park

    623-334-7744

A burger is an easy thing to find in metro Phoenix, but a great burger? That's a little harder. Aioli Gourmet Burgers, which also has a food truck, is our pick when we've got a burger craving. Aioli's offerings start with a Kobe beef patty, and it just gets better from there. Our favorite is the California burger, which tops the meat with avocado, pickled red onions, pepper jack cheese, an over-medium egg, and chipotle aioli. But we've also had great luck ordering the special burgers that are only available for a limited time; past creations include a French onion burger with caramelized onions and Swiss cheese, and a Dad Burger with Sriracha honey peanut butter and apricot preserves. If, for some crazy reason, beef isn't your thing, fear not: You can sub in a chicken breast or a vegan patty. Fresh salads, crave-worthy sides, and a selection of malts and shakes round out a menu that has something for everyone.

  • Angels Trumpet Ale House

    810 N. 2nd St. Central Phoenix

    602-252-2630

This downtown gastropub, built in a '70s-era block building with a spacious room, long bar, and outdoor patio, is more successful for its suds than its grub. Boasting 31 rotating craft brews on tap -- think local favorites, seasonals, and all-over IPAs – beer enthusiasts would be hard-pressed not to find something to their liking. But when it comes to the beer-friendly fare, many of the dishes seem too ambitious, often have preparation issues, and rarely deliver on their expected tastes. Relatively safe bets are the flatbread pizzas, spud tacos, and salads. For sweet-tooths, there's the alehouse's version of Pop Tarts.

  • Arcadia Tavern

4801 E. Indian School Rd. East Phoenix

    602-840-3950

We go here for good company, sure, but it's the bruschetta that we long for. The spinach and artichoke brucshetta is our favorite, and we like to order it during the week when we can get a whole board of the stuff along with a bottle of wine for only $20. Yummy sides include sweet potato tater tots, which have to be tasted to be believed. Good bar food includes Asian chicken salad, the piled-high monster nachos, and the Cobb 7, a salad so full of bacon and avocado, you'll pass out from joy.

  • Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co.

    721 N. Arizona Ave. Gilbert

    480-284-9863

Plenty of praise has been heaped upon the beers over at Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co. (chef's kiss to that extra-peachy Sonoran Prince), but the food at this "Arizona-inspired scratch kitchen" is top-notch as well. Wild concoctions like the peanut butter and jalapeño jelly burger and the dry-rub chicken drumsticks confit are reason alone to drop in to the original Gilbert location, which opened in 2013. Ditto the duck fat fries, which are memorable, weighty, and served piping-hot, flavored with rosemary and thyme, and paired with garlic aioli; no visit to the brewery should go without a basket for the table. AZ Wilderness opened a beer garden in downtown Phoenix on Roosevelt Row in 2019, and this location offers a tighter version of the Gilbert flagship's menu. But the fries are available, as are other go-tos like the Downtowner Burger (corn guac, pepper jack, onion strings), the AZ Hot Fried Chicken Sandwich, and the shareable bites of Buffalo cauliflower. New Normal: Both the Gilbert and Phoenix locations have open-air seating options. The downtown spot also doubles as a bird-friendly beer garden.

  • The Attic

4247 E. Indian School Rd. East Phoenix

    602-955-1967

Finger foods and affordable craft beer are the order of the day here.  Located on the second floor, this beer garden and wine bar technically is not in an attic, but it's high enough in relation to surrounding buildings to offer great views, even when you're seated inside. The dark paint and dark wood furniture create a cozy feel and the quirky, humorous framed art pieces and used tap handles hanging from the ceiling make for excellent conversation starters. The food? Almost all of the Attic's apps are $2 off during happy hour. Local favorites include the Brie and candied pancetta bruschetta, the caprese, and the Arcadia Attic wings. An interesting list of beers on tap will include at least one brew you've never heard of. And with more than 20 selections to choose from, you're sure to find something worth sipping.

  • Bad Jimmy's

108 E Pierce St Downtown Phoenix

    480-386-0129

Part casual burger shop, part cocktail bar and all hipster hangout, Bad Jimmy’s has left its glowing red neon mark on downtown Phoenix. What started as a pop-up that served smash burgers is now a brick-and-mortar destination. In the former home of The Breadfruit and Rum Bar on Pierce Street, the team serves a tight menu of classic burgers and waffle fries. Specials rotate and are worth trying each time. The wings are a hot commodity, as are swirls of vanilla soft serve topped with shiny verdant drips of olive oil. Whether you’re stopping in for a greasy meal after a night spent at the surrounding bars or grabbing a quick burger and a soda for lunch, this downtown Phoenix spot is sure to satisfy.

  • Blu Burger Grille

32409 N. Scottsdale Rd. North Scottsdale

    480-575-8040

If you like to micromanage your burger, come to this casual spot across the road from Kierland Commons. The menu offers several kinds of patties (including Kobe Beef, lamb, and crab cake), four kinds of buns, and a huge variety of toppings, along with salads, sandwiches, and some specialty burgers, like the signature Blu Buger, a half pound Angus patty topped with Gorgonzola, caramelized onions, and Applewood Bacon. Service can be slow and the minimal decor oddly evokes the '80s, but as long as you don't mind paying around 10 bucks for a burger and fries, the high quality eats make up for it.

  • Burger Studio

    602-216-2000

Hulking half-pound burgers are the house specialty at this sleek, no-frills eatery, where you can watch the staff flipping burgers right behind the counter. The Caprese burger, laden with fresh mozzarella, basil, tomato, pesto, greens, and balsamic reduction, is a good pick, along with irresistible sliders topped with grilled onions. Burger Studio does a fine job with sweet potato fries, too.

  • Catch 22 Sports Grill

    18725 N. 32nd St. North Phoenix

    602-482-9222

Phoenix's Catch 22 does a little bit of everything. The best category for this place is "sports bar" - they have 28 flatscreen TVs tuned to the big games and a nice selection of tap beers - but the proprietors go the extra mile in a few different directions. Patrons can shoot a little stick or relax on one of the leather couches, which gives the bar a bachelor-pad feel. If you're more interested in music, there's an open mic night on Thursdays and a rotating cast of bands on the weekends. Oh, yes, and they're doing the party-hosting thing, too, with the recent addition of a banquet room and a full menu. The crowd varies by the time and day, but depending on when you stop in you'll find everything from face-painted sports nuts to button-down office workers unwinding after a long day of work.

  • Chicago Hamburger Co.

3749 E. Indian School Rd. East Phoenix

    602-955-4137

We started going for the pinball and video games and ended up returning for the old fashioned milkshakes and the Vienna hot dogs on big, fluffy steamed buns. Chicago Hamburger Co. is home of the Original Windy City Slider, and also offers one of the tastiest triple-cheese subs in town. A real neighborhood restaurant, Chicago Hamburger Co. is an Arcadia tradition -- straight out of Chicago!

  • Chompie's Deli Restaurant, Bagels, Bakery & Catering

    3481 W. Frye Rd. Chandler

    480-398-3008

Fresh off the plane from Gotham, just started your long-distance subscription to the New York Times, and in desperate need of a bialy with a schmear? Perhaps you're peckish for a knish or a toasted bagel with a side of chopped liver? Chompie's has got you covered, pallie, like the isle of Manny-hanny with concrete. What else do your East Coast taste buds desire? A little chicken soup with kreplach? Chilled borscht with sour cream? Latkes with applesauce? A corned beef sammy with a pickle? Chompie's proffers these delicacies as well as more prosaic eats like meat loaf, tuna salad, turkey breast and so on. No wonder serious fressers call Chompie's their home away from home.

  • The Chuckbox

    202 E. University Dr. Tempe

    480-968-4712

The Chuckbox isn’t flashy. It’s not high-tech or cutting-edge. Heck, it still requires cash. But all of the things it’s not are why we love this Tempe institution. Housed inside a rustic cabin, it’s a stark contrast to the Miami-style high-rises that tower above it. The menu is tight, focusing on large mesquite-broiled burgers that sizzle and char over the flame that’s inches away from the counter. Options include a classic burger, cheeseburger, double cheeseburger, bacon burger or chicken sandwich. Bring a little heat to Sun Devil territory with the Tijuana Torpedo, a burger stuffed with jalapeno jack and topped with a whole green chile. Fries, onion rings and fried mushrooms make great old-school sides. Burger toppings, however, require some D.I.Y. Head to the toppings cart to pick up lettuce, tomato, pickles and sauces at this 1970s-era burger joint.
