  • Angry Crab Shack

2808 E. Indian School Rd., Suite D110, Phoeinix Mesa

    602-956-3088

Angry Crab Shack is a no-nonsense approach to Cajun seafood. Select from 9 different types of shellfish, choose your heat level and seasoning, and order by the pound. If it sounds similar to Hot N Juicy Crawfish, it is, but it's also better. The seafood is fresh, well prepared and served hot. Service is friendly, efficient and upbeat. The only disappointment was a lackluster bag of clams and gumbo that fell flat. Read our review.

  • Baby Kay's Cajun Kitchen

1582 E. Bethany Home Rd. Central Phoenix

    602-955-0011

If you've never been to Louisiana, Baby Kay's is the next best thing without actually having to leave the desert. It's got shrimp rémoulade, red beans and rice, jambalaya, boudin (a fried Cajun sausage served with apricot pepper jelly), po'boys, and on and on. Moreover, unlike at some of Baby Kay's competitors, it's all worth gnawin' on, and by the end of your meal, you'll be rubbing your belly and saying "ooh-wee" just like Cajun chef Justin Wilson did back in the day. We guar-on-tee.

  • Baby Kay's Cajun Kitchen

    2051 S Dobson Rd. Suite 18 Mesa

    480-800-4811

Since 1989, Baby Kay's Cajun Kitchen has been serving the Valley — more recently, the people of Dobson Ranch in Mesa — some decently authentic Cajun food. Think boudin balls, gumbo by the cup or bowl, and shrimp etouffee. The restaurant also offers regional sides like the red beans and rice, jambalaya, and dirty rice, a fiery combo of rice mixed with seasoned ground beef, spicy pork sausage, and veggies. And if you’re trying to keep it light, they’ve got an array of salads including the fried catfish salad, crab and shrimp salad, and the Lagniappe (Cajun for "a little something extra").

  • Cuff

    5819 W. Glendale Ave. Glendale

    623-847-8890

Chef Tom Harvey, late of Eddie V's in Scottsdale, has brought cuisine to downtown Glendale. Harvey’s a Georgia native, and his menu is crammed with Southern influences and ingredients. Meat is often smoked or pulled; grits and po-boys are featured. He’s partnered with chef Matteo Cataldo, whose Italian touches are apparent in the eggplant Parmesan sandwich and big-bowl presentation of a simple baked chicken, served “Amalfi style” in a lemon Parmesan broth. Shrimp and grits offers a half-dozen sweet, tender crustaceans on a bed of creamy, buttery grits; the melt-in-your-mouth brisket is another mainstay made better with a snappy brown-sugar-and-red-pepper glaze. Asian-influenced posole marries a half-dozen pot stickers, stuffed with seasoned roast pork and floating in a cilantro-rich tomato-chipotle broth. New American cuisine never tasted so original.

  • Flavors of Louisiana

13025 W. Rancho Santa Fe Blvd. Avondale

    623-935-2357

Flavors of Louisiana is a popular Avondale-area Cajun and Creole restaurant that has been serving the far West Valley for almost a decade. Neighborhood locals come often for the restaurant’s selection of home-style, classic southern Louisiana cooking. You’ll find a bevy of deep-fried appetizers, including thinly sliced fried green tomatoes and nicely fried hush puppies. This is a good place to try fried alligator, which you can enjoy in one of the restaurant’s tartar sauce-dressed po’boy sandwiches. The restaurant’s entrée menu includes very credible renditions of classic jambalaya, a wonderful étouffée that features a thick, garlickly roux sauce, and a Cajun Trio plate that you’ll order just to get your hands on one of the restaurant’s mega-popular crawfish pie.

  • Hot N Juicy Crawfish

    740 S. Mill Ave #185 Tempe

    480-634-6285

This Las Vegas-based restaurant chain offers Cajun-style, super-fresh seafood at market prices. In a small bar, a pair of dining rooms, and a wide outdoor patio, diners eat shellfish by the bagful -- pounds of it, surprisingly fresh and seasoned with flavors of chili and celery salt and big notes of Cajun spice. You choose from one of four sauces and different levels of spiciness, and shellfish comes to you shell-on in plastic bags, having been doused with the high-flavor sauce and spices you chose. Chicken dishes and spicy sausage are available for folks who aren’t so sea-going.
