  • Daily Dose

4020 N. Scottsdale Rd. Central Scottsdale

    480-994-3673

Daily Dose is simultaneously stylish and down-to-earth, a cheerful indie eatery from Matt and JenLyn Long, the same folks who own nearby Fusion Restaurant & Lounge. They serve accessible, affordable American comfort food with tasty, creative flourishes. Depending on the time of day, the restaurant either feels like a hip cafe (free Wi-Fi is a bonus) or a low-key lounge. Dig in to killer biscuits and gravy or decadent, fruit-laden pancakes in the morning, and sink your teeth into a hefty turkey melt later in the day.

  • Federal Pizza

5210 N. Central Ave. Central Phoenix

    602-795-2520

The fourth project from restaurateur Craig DeMarco and his Upward Projects team (Postino, Windsor, and Churn), this intimate yet lively pizza parlor, housed in a restored 1950s bank in north Central Phoenix, features a thoughtful food and drink menu with dishes ranging from the dependable, to the very good, to the sublime. Satisfying pizzas, designed by master bread maker MJ Coe, feature a slightly crispy and chewy crust with a thick, puffy edge and a harmonious flavor balance of toppings. But don’t stop at the pies. Federal also serves up lively salads, luscious pasta, and killer sandwiches incorporating ingredients like house-made mozzarella, locally procured sausage, and a farmers market’s bounty of vegetables. • Fired Pie

3110 N. Central Ave. Central Phoenix

    602-266-1490

When you bite into the Steak and Blue Pizza at Fired Pie, it bites back. That would be the gorgonzola, a pungent Italian cheese made from unskimmed cow's milk that has salty sass running through its blue veins. The way the cheese interacts with the rest of the Steak and Blue's ingredients — garlic, oil, mozzarella, mushrooms, peppers, onion, and thin-sliced steak — doesn't change much about its dirty-foot aroma. Against these odds, though, this pie tastes amazing. We recommend it for a solo outing, though. Maybe not great for date night.

  • Forno 301

    1616 N. Central Ave. #104 Central Phoenix

    480-787-5654

Forno 301 offers a small menu that’s full of expertly crafted dishes. A trio each of salads, Panini, bruschette, and house specialties are offered alongside three daily specials and a dozen different pizzas; highlights include the grapefruit salad, served as layers of tart fruit and slices of fennel tossed with mixed greens and tomatoes. The menu-staple Caprese, a simple, traditional preparation of sliced tomato, mozzarella, and fresh basil leaves with a drizzle of sweet balsamic is the perfect showcase for the mellow, woody olive oil that Forno imports from Italy. The bruschetti are all excellent, none so much as the 3, spread with gorgonzola, figs marmalade, and prosciutto crudo. Ravioli is cheesy pillows filled with ricotta and resting in a buttery broth of sage and olive oil. Decadent eggplant parmigiani is also perfect, layering tender, thin slices of eggplant, smoky mozzarella and tomato-rich red sauce. Forno means “oven,” and this one is hot.

    480-991-8999

You'll find the brightly lit juice bar and kitchen adjacent to the infamous Amy's Baking Company, in a shopping center located on the northwest corner of 74th Street and Shea Boulevard. Grabbagreen's menu offers plenty of choices, as well as the option to create your own meal in nearly every category. Juices come in a variety of flavors. For more substantial fare, Grabbagreen offers grains-based bowls and five salads. All of the menu is gluten-free, so look for ingredients like brown rice, quinoa, and quinoa noodles. Each bowl also comes with a selection of fresh vegetables, often a protein, and a housemade sauce -- think chimichurri, creamy avocado, and Mediterranean pomegranate. Read our review.

  • Heart and Soul Cafe

    4705 E. Carefree Highway #117 Cave Creek

    480-595-7300

This cute little cafe with a '57 Chevy in the middle of the room (and a dining table in the middle of the Chevy) offersoptions to make your breakfast seem anything but everyday. It's a favorite place for pancakes in particular, with the Bacon Blue Pancakes topping our list of favorite breakfast dishes. The dish is just blueberry pancakes with crispy bacon added to the batter, but they're so much better than that sounds, contrasting the plump sweetness of blueberries against the salty crunch of bacon.

  • Hob Nobs

149 W. McDowell Rd. Central Phoenix

    602-253-9220

People who've lived here a long time remember when this little Cotswold cottage was the home of the Willo House, and many of us were sad to see that long-time favorite lunch spot go away. That is, until we stopped in to eyeball the warm, friendly, and chic breakfast-and-lunch café that took its place. Now we can't stay away-especially at breakfast time, when we usually go for the steel-cut oats with honey and hot milk, or the tasty cheese-and-broccoli quiche, straight out of the deli case. There are sweets in that case, too, and we can never resist them. The peanut butter cookies are to die, but first (if we're dining mid-day) we go straight for the soup of the day, always made fresh and full of locally grown ingredients (if you're lucky, it's the gumbo, although the chicken noodle is also really good). Take away a bag of fresh-baked blueberry scones, and make a note to head back to hob nob some more, pronto!

  • Ingo's Tasty Food

    4502 N. 40th St. East Phoenix

    602-795-2884

Part upscale diner, part theater-in-the-round, Ingo's interior offers a single curved counter where guests can enjoy superb gourmet burgers crafted around a thick puck of grass-fed beef, cooked to a pinkish medium rare and seasoned with only salt and pepper. The simple cheddar Cheeseburger is moist and chop-house sized, and the Paris Texas Burger, served with smoky-sharp apple barbecue sauce and pancetta, is another winner. A better than decent wine list and some tasty sides (particularly the Shattered Potato Chips) make this a burger destination.

  • Leoni's Focaccia

    7116 E. Mercer Lane, #101 Central Scottsdale

    480-607-2888

The people – Danielle Leoni and Dwayne Allen to be exact – who brought you the Breadfruit & Rum Bar have also presented the Valley with fresh Italian sandwiches at Leoni's Focaccia. This Scottsdale lunch spot specializes in Roman-style focaccia bread paired with Italian meats, olive tapenade, and more. Leoni's Focaccia bread starts with flour imported from Italy, then gets baked in a Stone Heart, and basted with extra virgin olive oil. The focaccia is made daily, and the sandwich bread is said to never be older than an hour. There are seven signature sandwiches, numbered accordingly, with favorites including the #6, an albacore tuna salad sandwich. Other menu items include house and arugula salads, soup, and focaccia by the slice. Plus there’s a selection of house-baked cookies in flavors such as anisette, lemon drop, and walnut. The coffee is pretty good, too.

  • Portillo's

    65 S. McClintock Dr. Tempe

    480-967-7988

We've started gushing about Portillo's almost as soon as it opened, but what's a little more going to hurt? The Chicago-area staple is a master of hot dog arts, but what some people don't know is the glory of Portillo's cheese fries ($2.29 for a small and $2.59 for a large). Since the creamy, hot cheese sauce comes on the side of the crinkle-cut and crispy fries, you don't end up with a soggy mess a minute into eating them. Instead you get a perfect cheesy, potato-y bite every time.
