  • Gallagher's Food & Fun

2050 N. Alma School Rd. Chandler

    480-963-0093

Sports bars are a dime a dozen in every city in the U.S., so it’s hard for one to stand out from the pack. They all have sticky bars, ripped up barstools, cute-after-a-few-drinks bartenders, and TVs that are too often left on a channel no one wants to watch. If we ever had the opportunity to reinvent the wheel, the result would look a lot like Gallagher’s Sports Grill. There’s more for fans than a few tiny screens to stare at. Amenities include off-track betting windows, arcade games, trivia nights, karaoke, a posh outdoor patio complete with waterfall and breathtaking views, and 25 conveniently placed TVs broadcasting everything from the popular football and baseball games to sports with fewer fans, like bowling. The menu is on par too, including American standards like burgers, pizza, sandwiches, and grilled meats including baby back ribs and chicken fajitas. The best part? Gallagher’s has six locations spread throughout the Valley in South Phoenix, North Phoenix, Central Phoenix, Carefree, Chandler, and Peoria.

Live music and a generous specialty drinks menu are new features alongside one-of-a-kind breakfast dishes like chimichurri corned beef hash and flannels, which are a sort of down-home breakfast skillet meal. Burgers and sandwiches round out the recently revamped breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu.

  • Tacos De Juarez

1017 N. Seventh St. Central Phoenix

    602-258-1744

This humble-looking abode serves less-than-humble vittles served up by a friendly staff. The cheese enchiladas are among the best in town-topped with guacamole and sour cream and stuffed with a mélange of cheddars. Hard-shell carne asadas, with great flavors and just the right amount of cheese, are a house specialty, as is the fluffy Mexican rice, redolent with tomato and onion. (We order an extra side of the rice, it's so good.) Mexican breakfast dishes are available, and the lunch and dinner menus can be ordered from throughout the day.

The cupcake fad ain't over yet. At least not according to pastry chef Linda Schneider. Named after the glamorous Art Deco period, Schneider's upscale cupcakery in Scottsdale, decked out in marble and glass, features 12 different creations made each day from her family's recipes. Moist, light, and topped with an icing more sugary than creamy, the delicately sweet cherry and vanilla flavors are favorites, faring better than the breakfast and vanilla salted caramel varieties. At $3.35 each and smaller than many boutique cupcakes, these sweet indulgences are more special occasion than frequent eats, so make sure to enlist the help of the friendly counter folk to help direct you to the most popular kinds.

  • 43rd Express

    2844 N. 43rd Ave. West Phoenix

    602-269-3383

43rd Express (also known as Pho 43Express) is a family-run Vietnamese restaurant that has specialized in pho, the wildly popular beef noodle soup, since 1993. There are 20 pho options, including the Pho Dac Biet (house specialty pho), served with rice noodles and slices of brisket, tendon and tripe submerged in the restaurant’s intensely flavored beef broth. Rice platters like Com Bi Cha Thit Nuong, which features savory shredded pork skin, grilled pork and slices of steamed egg meatloaf, offer a flavorful alternative to pho. But many diners stream into this no-frills eatery for its delicious macaron cookies and macaron ice cream sandwiches, featuring Eastern ingredients like taro, Thai tea and panang.

    602-275-1707

This perennial Valley favorite is among a handful of places where Mexican breakfast fans can get their huevos rancheros in the a.m. Adrian's is known for its chicken mole, but check out the milanesa: beef pounded flat, then coated with crispy, fresh-fried batter. Chorizo and egg burritos are another breakfast classic.

So, you can save on plane fare to the Windy City by checking out this no-frills, family-run operation where the main attraction is the glassed-in barbecue pit and the savory meats it produces. Watch out, though: You may need Kanye's "New Workout Plan" after pigging out here.

  • America's Taco Shop

    4447 N. 7th Ave. Central Phoenix

    602-515-0856

By popular vote, this place is the home of the best carne asada in the valley-not to mention some of the freshest food around. America's Taco Shop makes everything fresh daily, in house, often from locally grown ingredients. We dig the Torta Pastor, a sort of a Mexican sandwich of toasted telera bread, mayonnaise, guacamole, pastor, pineapple, tomato salsa, cilantro, and lettuce. Our vegetarian friends swear by the veggie quesadilla, a flour tortilla stuffed with Monterey jack cheese, lettuce, caramelized onions, and topped off with gobs of guacamole. Did we mention carne asada? Crammed into a freshly made flour tortilla, it's our favorite burrito filling. Add guacamole, caramelized onions and pico de gallo, and you've got a primo meal!

  • Angel Sweet

    1900 W. Chandler Blvd. Chandler

    480-722-2541

Twenty-four types of Italian gelato, made fresh daily, in a small store the size of your normal ice cream shop. They're big on flavor, though, probably the closest thing to real Italian gelato you'll get short of hopping the next plane to Milan. Try the coconut and the pistachio - they're out of this world. And Eye-tie flavors like zuppa inglese and frutti di bosco will have you on your knees declaring that Yahweh must drive a Ferrari, wear mousse in his hair and go by the handle "Marcello."
