  • Catalina Sports Bar & Grill

    2939 N. 16th St. East Phoenix

    602-274-1320

Glare on the TVs? Not a problem in this sports bar: They ain’t got no windows at Catalina for the sun to shine through. Still, this 16th Street joint and former home of Philthy Phil's is a fine place to catch a Cardinals game and munch on the daily special, whatever it may be: enchiladas, flautas, tacos, tostadas. The Catalina’s got darts, a long bar with a lot of seats, and micheladas served in tall mason jars. Pop by later in the evening, and there’s a good chance you’ll encounter karaoke crooners or DJs set up on a small stage in the side room. Be warned: This place gets loud.

  • Gallagher's Food & Fun

751 E. Union Hills Dr. North Phoenix

    602-867-3222

Sports bars are a dime a dozen in every city in the U.S., so it’s hard for one to stand out from the pack. They all have sticky bars, ripped up barstools, cute-after-a-few-drinks bartenders, and TVs that are too often left on a channel no one wants to watch. If we ever had the opportunity to reinvent the wheel, the result would look a lot like Gallagher’s Sports Grill. There’s more for fans than a few tiny screens to stare at. Amenities include off-track betting windows, arcade games, trivia nights, karaoke, a posh outdoor patio complete with waterfall and breathtaking views, and 25 conveniently placed TVs broadcasting everything from the popular football and baseball games to sports with fewer fans, like bowling. The menu is on par too, including American standards like burgers, pizza, sandwiches, and grilled meats including baby back ribs and chicken fajitas. The best part? Gallagher’s has six locations spread throughout the Valley in South Phoenix, North Phoenix, Central Phoenix, Carefree, Chandler, and Peoria.

  • Irish Wolfhound Pub

    16811 N. Litchfield Rd. #102 Surprise

    623-214-1004

There are a lot of sports bars on the West side of town, but comfy, approachable Irish pubs? Not so much. Which is exactly why we were so happy to stumble upon Irish Wolfhound Pub in Surprise. The restaurant and bar looks like nothing special from the outside, sure, but walk in and you'll find a modern pub with pool tables, plenty of televisions, and a roomy patio with a fire pit to boot. During our happy hour experience — the pub offers dining and drinking deals everyday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. — we bellied up to the spacious bar and ordered a $2.50 domestic draft. The taps here boast a selection of the usual stuff as well as some awesome local and craft brews, including San Tan Brewery beers and Montana's Big Sky Brewing's IPA.

  • Mad Chef Gastropub

    3941 E. Chandler Blvd. Ahwatukee

    480-706-1333

The moniker of this stripmall joint in Ahwatukee isn't quite accurate - the vibe is more Irish pub-meets-IHOP. If you find yourself here, expect ordinary bar food with a few flourishes, like hot-out-of-the-oven Belgian pretzel bread.

  • O'Kelley's Sports Bar & Grill

    2120 W. Guadalupe Rd. #16 Mesa

    480-756-6069

A touch of the Irish in south Mesa, O'Kelley's is a dark-wooden pub that boasts 50-plus televisions, a regular gaggle of bar patrons, a pool table, darts, golf arcade, and full menu. It also hosts local rock bands on Fridays and Saturdays and karaoke on Mondays and Thursdays. Craft beer and poker are the way to go for Wednesday night though.

  • Uncle Bear's Bar & Tap

21151 S. Rittenhouse Rd. Queen Creek

    480-882-3177

Whenever we're in the mood to experience some karaoke fun with friends, we head for this East Valley establishment, where singalong action is featured two nights a week. In addition to a full menu of bar food delights, buckets of free peanuts are also available if you'd like a quick snack. Patrons usually discard their shells on the floor, so step carefully when heading to the bathroom between songs or house-brewed pints.

  • 20 Highland Tavern

    4701 N. 20th St. East Phoenix

    602-761-4750

When you're thinking about going out to watch the game, you probably aren't thinking about going to Whole Foods. However, if you're a craft beer lover, you might want to change your tune. Brews from Mikkeller, Dragoon, Mother Road, Dogfish Head, and more make the ever changing tap list, so you'll likely love exploring the menu. However, if you can't take the shame of Ubering to a grocery store, you can opt for a four beer flight to test out some different styles without over-imbibing. Plus, if you have vegetarian or vegan friends, you can all find something to eat on the full menu, which features pizza, sushi, and sandwiches.

  • Angels Trumpet Ale House

    810 N. 2nd St. Central Phoenix

    602-252-2630

This downtown gastropub, built in a '70s-era block building with a spacious room, long bar, and outdoor patio, is more successful for its suds than its grub. Boasting 31 rotating craft brews on tap -- think local favorites, seasonals, and all-over IPAs – beer enthusiasts would be hard-pressed not to find something to their liking. But when it comes to the beer-friendly fare, many of the dishes seem too ambitious, often have preparation issues, and rarely deliver on their expected tastes. Relatively safe bets are the flatbread pizzas, spud tacos, and salads. For sweet-tooths, there's the alehouse's version of Pop Tarts.

  • Applebee's

    2032 E. Baseline Rd. Mesa

    480-545-4299

The former Atlanta-based T.J. Applebee's Rx for Edibles and Elixirs, opened in 1980, has been transformed into one of the nation's best-known chain restaurants, and its Phoenix locations are easy to find on Voice Places. Thanks to consistency (Applebee's barbecued ribs are a worthy secret-recipe signature dish), a menu for the health-conscious (like the good-for-you Napa Chicken and Portobello platter, part of the chain's Under 550 Calories menu), and some wacky promotional schemes (the company has asked diners to rewrite popular songs with Applebee's menu items as the lyrics), the once-local restaurant now boasts 2,000 locations nationwide.
  • The Arrogant Butcher

2 E. Jefferson St. Downtown Phoenix

    602-324-8502

If you must dine in downtown Phoenix, try this 7,500-square-foot urban grill - where an ambitious menu holds a few hits along with the misses. We love the pate and the salads, though we recommend skipping the too-salty pastrami sandwich and the rather limp fries. Daily specials like Meatloaf and Mashed Potatoes (every Monday) and the Wednesday night Slow-Roasted Prime Rib bring people back again and again - or maybe it's just a lack of options. Here's to arrogance!

  • Bar 1912

4130 N. Seventh Ave. Central Phoenix

    602-612-2961

Hidden behind the restaurant on Seventh Avenue, Valentine’s love letter to Arizona cuisine continues in drink form. The entry of Bar 1912 is marked only by a neon sign that reads “Cocktails.” Inside, Mission revival-style niches behind the bar frame bottles, but the space’s feeling, down to its staff-curated vinyl, is a nod to Japanese listening rooms. Bar 1912’s menu takes cues from Arizona, including a quintet of cocktails inspired by the state’s five Cs. Try Cotton or Cattle. Cotton packs a playful pistachio flavor that conjures thoughts of pistachio cotton candy, while Cattle riffs on a classic Manhattan, infusing rye whiskey and añejo tequila with bone marrow. The fat-washing results in a velvety spirit-forward drink without the bite. Chef Donald Hawk and his team crank out elevated bites inspired by classic bar snacks, such as foie gras-stuffed olives and whipped pimento-raclette cheese. This all makes Bar 1912 a solid standalone spot or a perfect part of a splurge-worthy night that includes dinner at Valentine.
  • Bar Bianco

609 E. Adams St. Central Phoenix

    602-528-3699

Bar Bianco may be the most and least Phoenix bar. It reaches peak-Phoenix because, if you’re there, you’re likely killing time while waiting to enjoy the pizza that in many ways put the Valley’s culinary scene, and its connection to incredible local ingredients, on the map. At the bar, you can enjoy curated wines, local craft beers and a handful of classic cocktails while you wait, or you can satiate your hunger with fresh, slightly charred bread and olive oil or a plate of soppressata with dried cranberries. So, what makes Bar Bianco feel so not Phoenix? Its location next to the flagship Pizzeria Bianco in Heritage Square in a home that — gasp — predates air conditioning is surrounded by mature trees and in a rare area reserved for pedestrians, not cars. As such, the bar is transportive and invites you to linger and maybe, just maybe, forget about that wait.

  • Bar En Gril

110 S. Val Vista Dr. Gilbert

    480-539-0884

More casual sports bar than family dining environment, this former Native New Yorker in a Gilbert strip mall serves up satisfactory bar eats such as pizzas, wings, sandwiches, and salads amid the glow of numerous TVs in a spacious, sparse atmosphere. In addition to breakfast on Sundays, with offerings like breakfast pizzas and French toast, the kitchen stays open until midnight throughout the week. There are meaty wings slathered in sauce, pizzas with nice, crunchy crusts, and decent appetizers such as warm pretzel chunks. The food's not going to win any awards, but it'll do for game-time grub paired with a cold beer or two.

  • Bar Smith

130 E. Washington St. Central Phoenix

    602-456-1991

Creativity abounds on both floors of this bi-level beatshack located in downtown Phoenix. Bottle-tossing mixologists like Chase Crain show off their furious flairtending skills and whip up handcrafted artisan cocktails at the downstairs bar. Meanwhile, talented turntablists work the wheels of steel from an elevated platform on the rooftop lounge as urbanites and heavenly-looking honeys mix and mingle with their drinks. Street artists like Lalo Cota are also known to create one-of-a-kind murals on a large chalkboard that occupies one wall, turning Bar Smith into an impromptu gallery of sorts. Be sure to grab a picture of their efforts before last call, as its proprietors tend to erase the creation at the end of the night. The place serves lunch and dinner as well, focusing on American comfort food that goes well with alcohol, from a roasted barbecue pork sandwich and spicy chicken wings to old fashioned pot pie. Stop by for a midday meal or a casual bite before the game.

  • Bitter & Twisted Cocktail Parlour

1 W. Jefferson St. Central Phoenix

    602-340-1924

A self-described “cocktailian,” Ross Simon of Bitter & Twisted is known for his tome-like illustrated menus that offer studied riffs on legions of classics, resulting in libations that are proudly “whimsical as fuck.” Among those is the coldest old-school martini in town, which can be sipped in expansive booths upholstered in red leather under sky-high ceilings. Whether you're in downtown Phoenix for a show, or you make a special trip, be sure to stop in at Bitter & Twisted. Pro tip: Join the wait list online to secure an earlier spot in the queue.

  • Booty's Wings Burgers & Beer

    13375 W. McDowell Rd. #101 Goodyear

    623-440-4739

This small chain of west Valley sports bars knows food. Sure, you can go in for a High Life and a high-volume game, but you’d be remiss to wave away a menu. Especially for one of Booty's Wings Burgers & Beer in-the-name specialties — wings. The Traditional, Bone-In birds here are a good size, with the tough and crispy edges we all hope to see on a bar wing. But the flavor options are many, 13 kinds of rubs alone. And Booty's Blast is enticing, go for the Desert Ranch. It’s like a bag of Cool Ranch Doritos made chewable, especially when dipped in more of the house ranch.
