  • Fountini's Bar & Grill

13407 N. La Montana Dr. Fountain Hills

    480-837-4201

  • Gallagher's

    3220 E. Baseline Rd. #100 South Phoenix

    602-437-0981

Sports bars are a dime a dozen in every city in the U.S., so it’s hard for one to stand out from the pack. They all have sticky bars, ripped up barstools, cute-after-a-few-drinks bartenders, and TVs that are too often left on a channel no one wants to watch. If we ever had the opportunity to reinvent the wheel, the result would look a lot like Gallagher’s Sports Grill. There’s more for fans than a few tiny screens to stare at. Amenities include off-track betting windows, arcade games, trivia nights, karaoke, a posh outdoor patio complete with waterfall and breathtaking views, and 25 conveniently placed TVs broadcasting everything from the popular football and baseball games to sports with fewer fans, like bowling. The menu is on par too, including American standards like burgers, pizza, sandwiches, and grilled meats including baby back ribs and chicken fajitas. The best part? Gallagher’s has six locations spread throughout the Valley in South Phoenix, North Phoenix, Central Phoenix, Carefree, Chandler, and Peoria.

  • Applebee's

    2032 E. Baseline Rd. Mesa

    480-545-4299

The former Atlanta-based T.J. Applebee's Rx for Edibles and Elixirs, opened in 1980, has been transformed into one of the nation's best-known chain restaurants, and its Phoenix locations are easy to find on Voice Places. Thanks to consistency (Applebee's barbecued ribs are a worthy secret-recipe signature dish), a menu for the health-conscious (like the good-for-you Napa Chicken and Portobello platter, part of the chain's Under 550 Calories menu), and some wacky promotional schemes (the company has asked diners to rewrite popular songs with Applebee's menu items as the lyrics), the once-local restaurant now boasts 2,000 locations nationwide.
  • Azool Grill

    3134 W. Carefree Highway Anthem

    623-582-5177

It's all about choosing sides at Azool. The restaurant is split into two; both with bars and dining areas available. Big screen televisions in the rear room broadcast sporting events, and nearby there's a jukebox, pool table, Golden Tee arcade game, and an electronic dart board. The front half of the house is quieter, but no matter where you sit, the food is delightful. Appetizers include nachos and spinach dip as good as any other, but we always order the plate of sliders, one with sauerkraut and the other a French dip. The pulled pork sandwich and fish and chips are among the very best in town. The panko-crusted ahi sashimi over greens is also recommended; it's great with one of the several on-tap beers from the bar. Great!
  • Baja Loco Mesquite Grill & Cantina

3222 E. Indian School Rd. East Phoenix

If you were a fan of Chuy's Mesquite Broiler, the Mexican restaurant chain that came under fire in April when two of its owners were arrested for knowingly hiring illegal immigrants following a raid on 20 of their restaurants in Arizona and California, Baja Loco is pretty much the same restaurant — without the tax fraud stuff. With two locations in Phoenix and Glendale, this casual, beach-inspired eatery boasts a boatload of campy seaside decor along with a menu of traditional, fire-grilled Mexican favorites. Stick with the basic dishes like tacos and burritos, but don't expect too much in the way of surprises.

  • Cave Creek Smokehouse Grill & Pour House

6245 E. Cave Creek Rd. Cave Creek

    480-488-3317

Cave Creek Smokehouse is, shockingly enough, a BBQ joint with a large patio in Cave Creek. Their signature dish is a smoked brisket lasagna which is also exactly what it sounds like. Beyond the food though, Cave Creek Smokehouse also host a staggering number of events virtually every day of ever week. It's an excellent place to watch the game at or even to get into a Texas Hold'em game.

This fun, kid-friendly restaurant has some of the best full-meal daily specials around. Happy Hour starts early and includes $2 pints and an impressive list of imported wines for just $2.50 a glass.

  • Costa Vida Fresh Mexican Grill

21152 S. Rittenhouse Rd. Queen Creek

    480-888-7230

There are lots of homegrown options for Mexican food in Arizona, but we have to hand it to one Utah-based chain restaurant for serving fresh, healthy food: Costa Vida. There are three locations in Arizona: Mesa, Queen Creek, and the newest location in Goodyear, which has online ordering capability. Costa Vida serves standards like burritos, tacos, enchiladas, nachos, and quesadillas, but we really love the salads, served on a tortilla hand-crafted with stone-ground flour. Top the leafy greens with sweet pork, grilled chicken, shredded beef, raspberry chipotle chicken, mango chicken, or grilled steak to get your protein fix, and then choose tomatillo ranch, cilantro lime vinaigrette, or sweet and smooth mango dressing. The brand is also working to make its food as gluten-free as possible, including sauces, dressings, and meats. It’s easy to avoid wheat gluten; just be sure not to have the flour or whole wheat tortilla or two of the desserts, tres leches cake and key lime pie.

  • Downtown Sports Grill

    3 S. 2nd St. Central Phoenix

    602-307-5825

We think baseball paraphernalia and cheap burgers when someone mentions "sports bar," but not at this fun and classy place. Dark wood paneling, leather booths, soft lighting and comfort-food menu items like grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato-basil soup make us forget every dive we've ever eaten in, whenever we visit the former Stoudemire's Downtown. Weekly dance parties blow with hip-hop tunes and celeb deejays spinning cool new mixes, but we go for the tasty potato skins and the impressive wine list. Score!
  • Eddie V's Prime Seafood

15323 N. Scottsdale Rd. Ste. E160 North Scottsdale

    480-730-4800

This is the Valley's premier seafood restaurant. The oysters are superb, the Georges Bank scallops are off the chain, and the butterfish will give you the culinary equivalent of the Big O. When it comes to dessert, order the Godiva cake.

  • El Dorado Bar & Grill

8708 E. McDowell Rd. South Scottsdale

    480-945-2606

A magnet for bikers, barflies, and the blue-collar brigade, this rough-around-the-edges roadhouse in south Scottsdale features a nightly cast of characters that are just as colorful as the neon beer signs on its walls. From slick-looking billiards sharks engaging in nine-ball on the tables to the hippies and housewives playing board games around the horseshoe-shaped bar, the El Dorado is always bustling with activity. Its live entertainment schedule is just as energetic, with karaoke taking place five times a week and a popular blues jam on Wednesdays. Patrons also pack the place for ladies night on Tuesday, which offers 50-cent beers, free pool, and just as many guys in attendance as girls.

  • Fogo De Chao

6300 N. Scottsdale Rd. North Scottsdale

    480-609-8866

Grilled meats are undoubtedly the main attraction at this upscale churrascaria, inspired by the gauchos (that is, cowboys) of southern Brazil. It's the first Arizona location for the international chain, which was founded 30 years ago in Brazil. The all-you-can-eat price of dining here includes up to 15 different cuts of meat served tableside by "gaucho chefs," who roam from table to table wielding sword-like skewers of flame-grilled flesh. When it comes to side dishes and salad bar offerings, though, this place loses its sizzle. Read our review.

  • Hambone Sports Bar and Grill

    903 E. Main St. Mesa

    480-833-9839

The first thing you’ll notice at this neighborhood bar on Mesa’s Main Street is that you can smoke inside. That’s because there aren’t technically windows, just screens, meaning it’s actually one large enclosed patio. (The bar switched to this model after the 2007 statewide smoking ban.) The staff says the Hambone dates back to 1956, but that date is only thrown around because one patron remembers his dad coming here as far back as then. Hambone has six pool tables (don’t ash on the felt) and is only closed for four hours a day, meaning you can grab a bloody mary at 6 a.m. with the promise of a nearby light rail ride home. Other features include sports-heavy TVs, darts, arcade games, karaoke on Saturday nights, and colorful claw machines (often with X-rated prizes). Or you could just sit and drink with all the other Hamboners.

  • The Hideaway Grill

6746 E. Cave Creek Rd. Cave Creek

    480-595-0358

This trendy bar hangout has become a national destination for bikers from all over the country-and not just because it's owned by a motorcycle fanatic. It might be the Famous Hideaway Pizza, a pie that's known only to ever have been eaten alone on one occasion. It's great for sharing, is what we're saying; piled high with tangy marinara and as many cheeses as you can order. Also yummy is the Roast Beef Melt, made with fresh-shaved, home-cooked beef roast and filled with onions and cheese. The Chili Burger is great for hearty appetites, and for fussier eaters, we've had the very delicious Chicken Cordon Bleu, and plan to go back for more of it-and we don't even own a chopper!

  • Jerk Hut Jamaican Grille

    4115 N. 19th Ave. Central Phoenix

    602-279-8444

This tiny, fast-casual eatery in a strip mall strip by a bus stop on 19th Avenue just north of Indian School Road, delivers on Jamaica’s rich and highly-seasoned flavors from a small selection of traditional, street-side eats served up in plentiful portions and wallet-friendly enough to try more than one. Try the rich and aromatic curried goat, Rastafarian friendly veggie stew made with pineapple and soy, or the spectacular jerk chicken. Those with time to spare should order up the escovitch fish, a whole snapper fried in marinated in a vinegary concoction that will leave the tongue tingling. And don’t forget beverages of ice-cold Ting or D&G Jamaican sodas or the by-request-only cup of Blue Mountain coffee.

  • Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville

    6751 N. Sunset Blvd. Glendale

    623-772-0011

Valley Parrotheads, rejoice! Jimmy Buffett has stationed an outpost of his well-known Margaritaville franchise in the desert. This tropical-themed bar, a nod to one of Buffet's better-known songs, serves up its namesake well. Actually, there are over twenty frozen and blended concoctions on the menu. But if booze in a blender isn't your cup of tea (or, ahem, tequila), the bar has plenty of premium brews to choose from, including the house beer, Land Shark Lager, which became so popular they now sell it at supermarkets. Stop by on Saturday nights for live music, and in between sets the band might just help you look for that lost shaker of salt.
  • Marc's Sports Grill & Nightlife

    4494 W. Peoria Ave. Glendale

Free pool and ping pong is offered daily, there's karaoke going on in the MarcTini Lounge every evening, no limit Texas Hold'em action on Wednesdays, DJs spinning Top 40 tracks on the weekends, and drink specials almost every night. If that doesn't float your boat, the standard trivia games, touch screen machines, and arcade titles are also available for play.

  • Queen Creek Cafe

22002 S. Ellsworth Rd. Queen Creek

    480-888-9241

This Queen Creek restaurant and sports lounge has small town charm and an all-American menu to match. For breakfast, there are pancakes with multiple toppings, homestyle skillets, omelets, corned beef hash, French toast, and Taylor ham. Stop by for a burger for lunch, like the half-pound Duke Burger with grilled onions, pepper jack cheese, and a sunny side egg, or the Philly Burger with grilled onions, red and green peppers, mushrooms, and Swiss cheese. For a Southwestern twist, get the guacamole burger with shredded Colby jack. There are also classic sandwiches like the BLT, French dip, and country-fried steak melt. Larger plates for dinner include BBQ pork ribs with cornbread, surf and turf with grilled or fried shrimp, liver and onions, southern fried chicken, and homemade meatloaf. There’s also a full-service bar, daily happy hour from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., senior specials, and weekly specials like the Wednesday chuck wagon steak wrapped in bacon and the Friday fish fry.

  • Roman's Oasis

    16825 W. Yuma Rd. Goodyear

    623-932-0922

A multi-roomed bar and dance hall, Roman’s has been serving drinks and bar food near the intersection of Yuma Road and Cotton Lane in Goodyear since 1986. Quirks abound at this honky-tonk, which is run these days by founder Roman Comer’s daughter, Myra Curtis. Its slogan used to be, “Just look for the big rooster” — a nod to a recognizable chicken that’s among the many lawn and roof ornaments outside the bar — but has since graduated to, “Just look for the big cock,” now the official motto. There is also a tree that is literally growing up out of the kitchen. The cash-only tavern is filled to the brim with neon beer signs, photos of past patrons, and vintage road signs. In addition to cold beer and heavy pours, Roman’s offers hot dishes like burgers, wings, and tacos. On weekends, expect lots of loud music, either in the form of karaoke, DJ sets, or live country-western bands.
