  • Angels Trumpet Ale House

    810 N. 2nd St. Central Phoenix

    602-252-2630

This downtown gastropub, built in a '70s-era block building with a spacious room, long bar, and outdoor patio, is more successful for its suds than its grub. Boasting 31 rotating craft brews on tap -- think local favorites, seasonals, and all-over IPAs – beer enthusiasts would be hard-pressed not to find something to their liking. But when it comes to the beer-friendly fare, many of the dishes seem too ambitious, often have preparation issues, and rarely deliver on their expected tastes. Relatively safe bets are the flatbread pizzas, spud tacos, and salads. For sweet-tooths, there's the alehouse's version of Pop Tarts.

  • The Arrogant Butcher

2 E. Jefferson St. Downtown Phoenix

    602-324-8502

If you must dine in downtown Phoenix, try this 7,500-square-foot urban grill - where an ambitious menu holds a few hits along with the misses. We love the pate and the salads, though we recommend skipping the too-salty pastrami sandwich and the rather limp fries. Daily specials like Meatloaf and Mashed Potatoes (every Monday) and the Wednesday night Slow-Roasted Prime Rib bring people back again and again - or maybe it's just a lack of options. Here's to arrogance!

  • Citizen Public House

    7111 E. 5th Ave. Ste. E. Central Scottsdale

    480-398-4208

Don't let the name and the address fool you. Citizen Public House, founded by former Cowboy Ciao culinary master chef Bernie Kantak, may sound pretentious, but its stylish yet relaxed atmosphere and offerings of classic American fare with a delicious kick are nothing short of modest classiness. From picture-perfect scallops and standout starters like the luscious crispy sesame pork belly to the Original Chopped Salad (so popular it has its own Facebook page) and dreamy desserts, at Citizen Public House, deliciousness is in every detail. Whether it's an evening out, a pairing dinner, happy hour fun, or late-night noshing — all with the added enjoyment of a team that's as comfortable to be around as your dining companions — Citizen Public House deserves to be in heavy rotation on your restaurant playlist, particularly if you find yourself in Scottsdale.

  • CJ's Talley's Pub

    6022 N. 16th St. East Phoenix

    602-248-7765

The folks at Cj's Talley's Pub tend to be a close-knit bunch. The banter between the patrons and the barkeeps is priceless, with everyone cracking jokes about the latest happenings in the social circle, ordering up rounds of Bud Light and Fat Tire, and sharing belly laughs. The hostess is happy to switch channels between sporting matches, and she doesn"t even need to ask most of the crew what they want to drink. The bar comes stocked with normal bar accouterments, like a pool table and bartop games, but the real allure is the friendly vibe; spend a few minutes in Talley's and you'll be amazed how quickly the bartender picks up your name.

  • Culinary Dropout

    5632 N. 7th St. Central Phoenix

    602-680-4040

We usually go to Culinary Dropout at The Yard to take advantage of the ping-pong tables, cornhole, shuffleboard, and 1,400 square feet of patio space. Unlike some Phoenix spots, this is a bar where you can take anyone -- your co-worker, parents, picky-eater friends -- to have a decent drink and a good time. When the weather allows, the covered outdoor patio offers games and comfortable seats that lend themselves perfectly to drinking the day away in good company. You'll have to valet park (it's free but bring cash to tip), but by the time you've had a few drinks you probably should just leave the driving to someone else anyway.

  • Culinary Dropout

    149 S. Farmer Tempe

    480-240-1601

The menu at this trendy watering hole is full of hearty fare like short rib pasta, grilled cheese sliders, housemade chips, and burgers, although execution still leaves a lot to be desired. As a consolation, there are dozens of wines by the glass or bottle, 25 different craft cocktails ranging from classic (French 75, Moscow Mule) to creative (the Sauerkraut combines Beefeater and St. Germain with lemon, simple syrup, orange marmalade, and Dijon mustard), and an extensive beer list that's heavy on microbrews and imports.

  • Dierks Bentley's Whiskey Row

4420 N. Saddlebag Trail Central Scottsdale

    480-945-4200

Dierks Bentley’s namesake bar, restaurant, and honky-tonk in Scottsdale is as homespun as one of the country star’s slew of chart-topping hits and just as raucous. It overflows with rustic charm -- a largish American flag mural and a vintage Farmall tractor decorate the entrance while reclaimed barn wood is everywhere -- and loud weekend hootenannies that compete with neighboring Saddlebag Trail nightspots for sheer rowdiness and volume. Ten elevated booths ring the 5,200-square-foot joint, each featuring tabletop taps that dispense beers (Newcastle, Blue Moon, Coors Light) and booze (Grey Goose, Yukon Jack) and offering excellent views of country and western bands performing on the stage suspended above the bar. The vittles, crafted by executive chef Samantha Roberts, also have a down-home flair, including the mac and cheese burgers, fried pickles, and a s'mores brûlée. Be sure to hit the dance floor after grubbing, however, to keep yourself from getting too big of a badonkadonk.

  • The Golden Pineapple

    2700 S. Mill Ave. Tempe

    480-590-5703

This unassuming neighborhood watering hole located just down the street from Arizona State University stands out thanks to a decades-old sprawling and towering ficus tree that shades a cozy, street-side, dog-friendly patio. The Golden Pineapple Craft Lounge’s rustic entrance gives way to a space that exudes laid-back beachside vibes with dining tables, high-tops and a J-shaped bar where bartenders work their magic. The impressive cocktail menu features thoughtful versions of classics. Order the house margarita with mezcal instead of tequila and spicy with a five-pepper agave mixer. The Malaysian Mule gets its flair from Thai chile and lemongrass. And Wild Turkey 101 that’s infused with Benton’s bacon is the base for the old fashioned. The food menu leans heavy on plates meant to be shared. Warm plantains get the nachos treatment with a pile of queso blanco, carne asada, jalapeno and cotija; while the Navajo taco and masa fritters are departures from typical bar fare.

  • Ground Control

4860 N. Litchfield Rd. Litchfield Park

    623-535-9066

Ground Control Coffee & Wine Bar is exactly what the name implies: a home base for all things delicious in Litchfield Park. Coffeehouse by day, wine bar by night, this café on steroids serves everything from cappuccinos and signature blended drinks to cheese boards and house-made gelato. They’ll even pour a shot of Bailey’s over your favorite gelato flavor for $6.95. The restaurant is run by husband and wife team Tara and Sean, who gained a passion for fine wine, great coffee, delicious food, and world-class beers while living in Europe. After settling in the Valley, the two wanted to create a place filled with their favorite things. However, what it’s not a central hub for is work or browsing the web – there’s no Wi-Fi here. Instead, Ground Control encourages patrons to hold community gatherings, hang out with a friend, or at least enjoy a quiet afternoon with a book.

  • Ingo's Tasty Food

    4502 N. 40th St. East Phoenix

    602-795-2884

Part upscale diner, part theater-in-the-round, Ingo's interior offers a single curved counter where guests can enjoy superb gourmet burgers crafted around a thick puck of grass-fed beef, cooked to a pinkish medium rare and seasoned with only salt and pepper. The simple cheddar Cheeseburger is moist and chop-house sized, and the Paris Texas Burger, served with smoky-sharp apple barbecue sauce and pancetta, is another winner. A better than decent wine list and some tasty sides (particularly the Shattered Potato Chips) make this a burger destination.

This beautifully remodeled Arcadia restaurant and brewhouse offers a superb craft beer list, delicious hand crafted cocktails, and two gorgeous patios to day drink an afternoon away. If you get hungry, stick with the eatery's sandwiches and BBQ items. They make a mean burger and their brisket sandwich is one of our favorites. Check out the chalkboards for the brewery's latest craft beer selection and be sure to keep an eye on their Facebook page for exciting craft beer events.

  • Salty Sow

4801 E. Cactus Rd. North Scottsdale

    602-795-9463

The second location of the contemporary American restaurant in Austin, Texas, Salty Sow in Phoenix comes courtesy of the restaurateurs behind such concepts as Z'Tejas, Eddie V's, and Roaring Fork. There’s nothing too interesting about its American dishes with a Southern spin, but if it's cocktails with names like Miss Piggy and Curly Tail and a comfortable yet subtly themed interior you’re after, this is your place.

We feel like we're in Dublin whenever we cozy up to the bar in this handsome, mahogany-rich eatery. That's because the ambience is pure Irish pub, from the tapestry window coverings and token Irish flag to the black mosaic tiling. Comfort food favorites include meatloaf, pot roast and prime rib, with salads, burgers and pasta dishes as daily specials. If you go, don't not start out with a bowl of the terrific Vidalia Onion and Guinness Soup, a tasty starter served French style under a stringy blanket of melted cheese. Perfection.
