  • Alice Cooperstown

101 E. Jackson St. Central Phoenix

    602-253-7337

School's out forever at this hybrid sports/rock 'n' roll theme eatery where the shock-rocker born Vincent Furnier is worshipped like a demigod. Goth-punk waitresses wear eye makeup à la Cooper, and his ghoulish image stares out at you from nearly every table. Fender guitars signed by such acts as The Police, Eric Clapton, and Black Sabbath line the walls, along with a collection of sports memorabilia. Huge TV screens face you at nearly every angle so you can watch any and every game that might be on. Surprisingly, the food's not bad for bar grub: barbecue, burgers, sammies, chili, wings, etc. Cool spot to eat before or after a game at nearby U.S. Airways Center or Chase Field.

  • Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co.

    721 N. Arizona Ave. Gilbert

    480-284-9863

Plenty of praise has been heaped upon the beers over at Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co. (chef's kiss to that extra-peachy Sonoran Prince), but the food at this "Arizona-inspired scratch kitchen" is top-notch as well. Wild concoctions like the peanut butter and jalapeño jelly burger and the dry-rub chicken drumsticks confit are reason alone to drop in to the original Gilbert location, which opened in 2013. Ditto the duck fat fries, which are memorable, weighty, and served piping-hot, flavored with rosemary and thyme, and paired with garlic aioli; no visit to the brewery should go without a basket for the table. AZ Wilderness opened a beer garden in downtown Phoenix on Roosevelt Row in 2019, and this location offers a tighter version of the Gilbert flagship's menu. But the fries are available, as are other go-tos like the Downtowner Burger (corn guac, pepper jack, onion strings), the AZ Hot Fried Chicken Sandwich, and the shareable bites of Buffalo cauliflower. New Normal: Both the Gilbert and Phoenix locations have open-air seating options. The downtown spot also doubles as a bird-friendly beer garden.

  • Arizona Wilderness DTPHX

201 E. Roosevelt St. Central Phoenix

    480-462-1836

Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co. opened its downtown Phoenix beer garden (the original’s in Gilbert) in 2019 with the goal of becoming the living room of Roosevelt Row. To say it has succeeded would be an understatement. The massive patio, sun-shaded and full of native plants meant to attract local birds and bugs, is a major draw in the neighborhood, to the point that the crowds sometimes spill over into a line down the sidewalk. Popular beers include Refuge, the “flagship IPA incepted in our founder’s garage,” or so the menu states, as well as the DON'T F#%K IT UP Blonde Ale and the Belgian-style witbier Sonora White. The food rocks, too: We like the PB&J Burger and the duck fat fries.

  • Blast & Brew

7000 E. Mayo Blvd. Suite 1002 North Phoenix

    480-257-3300

Kramer was right, people, they really want to make their own pizza pie. Though technically opening in October, Blast & Brew made a bigger splash in November with the debut of this spot’s first Arizona location. This fully customizable pizza and self-pour beer restaurant allows you to create and cook your own pizza, with prices ranging from $8 to $11 per pie. But don’t worry, it’s all supervised.

  • The British Open Pub

1334 N. Scottsdale Rd. South Scottsdale

    480-941-4915

Cozy British-themed pub with a fair selection of British and international beers, and some pretty decent English grub: sausage rolls, fish and chips, bangers and mash, and an excellent beef and Guinness pie. Baskets of Wallys -- deep-fried spears of dill pickles -- make for terrific bar food when paired with a cold pint. For a happy ending, look to the dessert menu, offering such blood-sugar-raising delights as bread pudding with Grand Marnier.

  • Cactus Jack's

    4747 E. Elliot Rd. #5 Ahwatukee

    480-753-4733

Cactus Jack’s brings a rock ‘n’ roll atmosphere to an otherwise sleepy strip mall in Ahwatukee. Credit co-owner Gina Lombardi, who bought a stake in the neighborhood bar in 2014 after her landmark rock venue The Sail Inn was pushed out of Tempe by gentrification. She installed a stage, a sound system, a lighting rig, and a dance floor within its cavernous main room before bringing in local bands, DJs, and performers across multiple genres that frequented the Sail. Tribute acts, party bands, and jam sessions have also found a home here. And since every good rock ‘n’ roll tale involves alcohol, the bar and cocktail selection also got a revamp. Ahwatukee won’t become the next live music hotbed anytime soon, but it's at least a little more interesting thanks to Cactus Jack’s.

  • Delux Grill + Sushi

3146 E. Camelback Rd. East Phoenix

    602-522-2288

The shopping cart fries are what you’ll most likely remember after eating at Delux, an upscale burger joint in the Biltmore area. They’re called “A La Cart” fries, and they’re served in an actual mini shopping cart overflowing with french or sweet potato fries. But the burger is the real star of the show here. A pioneer in Phoenix’s gourmet burger restaurant game, Delux offers Niman Ranch-sourced meat and was one of the first places in town to offer lettuce wraps instead of a bun (or, in Delux’s case, a demi-baguette). The signature Delux Burger is a half-pound of 100-percent vegetarian-fed beef, augmented by caramelized onions with applewood smoked bacon bits, Gruyere cheese, Maytag blue cheese, and baby arugula. But there’s more to Delux than gourmet burgers. Craft beer, cocktails, and some quite-good sushi round out the Delux Burger experience.

  • Fate Brewing Company

    7337 E. Shea Blvd. #105 North Scottsdale

    480-994-1275

Fate is kind of like all of Phoenix's bigger brewpubs shrunk down to a miniature. While that means it isn't supplying its beer all over town just yet, it does mean that Fate is constantly brewing new and different beers to sample every day. It also means you have a front row seat to the brewing process because it takes place pretty much dead center of the small restaurant and bar. It's hard to say just which Fate beer is our fave because the list changes so often, but in the past, we've enjoyed the Rye ESB and Belgian Wit. We also can't get enough of their snackable pizza bread, which ideally accompanies the craft drafts.

  • Fibber Magees

    1989 W. Elliot Rd. #19 Chandler

    480-722-9434

Owned by the same lads that operate the Skeptical Chymist, Fibbers is also a popular Irish pub of the traditional bent. Its authenticity extends beyond just having Guinness and Harps on tap and Jameson behind the bar. The place is loaded with Celtic curiosities aplenty -- from antique cigarette signs to various and sundry trinkets. It also prides itself on filling patrons with "craic," a term straight from the Emerald Isle describing an uproarious vibe, much like what you might witness on any given night when live music and ample drink specials are offered. Bonus -- there's a real chef in the kitchen, cranking out some truly top-notch cuisine. This is way better than average pub grub, with silky smoked salmon, homemade brown and soda breads, fresh grilled fish, and an incredible shepherd's pie. Read our review.

  • Four Peaks Brewing Company

    1340 E. Eighth St., #104 Tempe

    480-303-9967

Arizona's largest brewery, Four Peaks Brewing Co. has been serving craft beer and upscale pub fare in a late-19th century, Mission-style Tempe warehouse since 1996. Yes, there are other locations, and yes, Anheuser-Busch InBev acquired the brewing company in 2015, but the 8th Street Pub remains a totally Tempe institution (and is said to be haunted to boot). The brewpub is more cavernous and industrial than most little beer joints, but that’s because the brewery is on site. Grab a seat at the bar where you can watch the many displayed flags gently sway in the rafters with your pint and burger, or head to the lively patio right off Eighth Street. Order one of Four Peaks’ famed beers: Kilt Lifter (and its lighter version, Gilt Lifter), the Hop Knot, the beloved Peach Ale, and even the hyper-specific 8th Street Pale Ale.

  • Gordon Biersch Brewery & Restaurant

    420 S. Mill Ave. Tempe

    480-736-0033

Businesses tend to come and go in Downtown Tempe, but brewpub Gordon Biersch, which overlooks the corner of Mill Avenue and Fifth Street, has been a loyal mainstay for more than a decade. It's no surprise, given the bar's lofty view (which is particularly nice at sunset) and the establishment's longstanding dedication to handcrafted beer. Dressed in casual khakis, business folks sample such Biersch standards as Golden Export, Hefeweizen, Czech Pilsner, Märzen brew, and rotating seasonal beers (brewed in-house), with the gleaming stills visible from the dark oak bar. The menu is just as sophisticated as the lagers. Munch on appetizers like crab cakes with Cajun rémoulade and pot stickers, then move on to entrees like the sesame-seared ahi tuna, Cajun pasta and jambalaya. Read our review.

  • Greenwood Brewing

    922 N. 5th St. Downtown Phoenix

    602-875-8577

Greenwood Brewing, with its cheery, modern interior and cozy patios, has been a staple of Roosevelt Row since its opening in July 2020. Featuring globe pendant lights, brass and marble accents, vases of flowers and an airy feel, it’s the antithesis of the dark, brooding, bro-centric brewery — with good reason: It’s woman-owned. Megan Greenwood, a home brewer who started with a 5-gallon kit in her kitchen, developed the brand to entice more women to enjoy craft beer. The flagship brew, a pale ale, is called Herstory, and Greenwood also makes Rosemary IPA, among other core and rotating experimental brews. In addition to its inviting indoor space, the brewery offers two outdoor courtyards with misters in the summer and heaters in the winter, and you can conveniently order food from nearby establishments via a QR code on the tables. Greenwood Brewing also hosts events such as Sunday Funday with $10 flights and live music, and trivia on Tuesdays.

  • Half Moon Sports Grill

2121 E. Highland Ave. East Phoenix

    602-977-2700

At first blush, Half Moon might seem to be strictly a "guys night out" kind of bar. After all, pictures of half-exposed hineys are scattered throughout the establishment, the wait staff consists almost entirely of young and attractive women in form-fitting tank tops, and there's nothing but sports on all the TVs. If you look past the obvious nods to man-cave culture, however, you'll find that this is also one of the more appealing sports bars for the fairer sex as well. Perhaps it's due to its proximity to the Biltmore (or even a menu that balances pub grub with such selections as the pear gorgonzola salad), but the establishment just feels classier than your run-of-the-mill sports bar. Patrons run the gamut from college kids and urban professionals to families with children and a slew of Alabama expats (the bar hosts a significant Crimson Tide contingent every Saturday during football season). With excellent happy hour specials and private party rooms, Half Moon is a great destination for groups large and small.

  • Hundred Mile Brewing Co.

    690 N. Scottsdale Rd. Tempe

    480-256-1623

Although it’s a bit off the beaten path, tucked in near a Holiday Inn Express along the north bank of Tempe Town Lake, Hundred Mile Brewing Co. is worth seeking out for its indoor/outdoor vibe that’s big enough for groups yet appropriate for an intimate date night. The operation, which opened in December 2022, is housed in a 10,000-square-foot white brick former print shop. A large patio with an awning in front includes a dog-friendly turf area and games, such as cornhole and giant Connect Four. Owner Sue Rigler and her team churn out quality brews that include IPAs, a hoppy pilsner, smooth amber ale, pale ale and more. The kitchen offers ramped-up bar food for almost any taste, including chimichurri nachos, a sesame-crusted ahi bowl, a vegan burger and miso-glazed salmon. There’s also a full bar with an impressive cocktail selection and a wine list that hits all the right notes.

  • Huss Brewing Co. Taproom at Uptown Plaza

100 E. Camelback Rd., Suite 160 Central Phoenix

    602-441-4677

This Tempe brewery made its way to Uptown Plaza, settling in a back-corner spot with a cozy patio and open dining area. At Huss Brewing Co. you can grab an icy cold helping of the Papago Orange Blossom or the Koffee Kolsch, which is especially encouraged during happy hour — 3 to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Pitchers are $6, and wine is $1 off (oh yeah, there’s also wine and cider). But the big treats are the $3 sliders. We recommend the caprese, but the green chile pork and roast beef are also pretty killer.
