  • The Attic

4247 E. Indian School Rd. East Phoenix

    602-955-1967

Finger foods and affordable craft beer are the order of the day here.  Located on the second floor, this beer garden and wine bar technically is not in an attic, but it's high enough in relation to surrounding buildings to offer great views, even when you're seated inside. The dark paint and dark wood furniture create a cozy feel and the quirky, humorous framed art pieces and used tap handles hanging from the ceiling make for excellent conversation starters. The food? Almost all of the Attic's apps are $2 off during happy hour. Local favorites include the Brie and candied pancetta bruschetta, the caprese, and the Arcadia Attic wings. An interesting list of beers on tap will include at least one brew you've never heard of. And with more than 20 selections to choose from, you're sure to find something worth sipping.

  • Chilly Bombers

    4917 W. Bell Rd. Glendale

    602-298-0843

West Valley bros and their babes bump humps at Chilly Bombers to Top 40 and hip-hop or head to the bar to suck down a selection of ice-cold specialty drinks and bombers, like the sweet sounding Purple Gatorade and Gummy Bear shots. Yum!

  • Citizen R+D

    7111 E. 5th Ave. Central Scottsdale

    602-904-3904

This cozy, intimate Scottsdale lounge is all about its craft cocktails: a lambic sorbet made from raspberry-flavored beer, then turned into a slushy by an old-fashioned paint-can shaker; a berry-and-lemonade punch made with hand-stirred dry ice; and a gin-and-tonic cooked up in a double boiler from 100-proof vodka distilled over dried juniper berries, lemon rinds, and cardamom. There are drinks here made from cotton candy, or fire, or with tiny bottles of bitters inverted into them. If that’s not exclusive enough for you, check this out: one telephones the bouncer to be let into this 28-seat lounge. If there’s room, he’ll come get you and escort you into R&D’s cozy interior, where you’ll enjoy drinks made table-side with hard-to-find ingredients you've never tasted alongside your hooch before.

  • English Rose Tea Room

    201 Easy St. Carefree

    480-488-4812

When you can’t afford a trip to jolly ol’ England, you can take a short drive to the English Rose Tea Room in Carefree. Afternoon tea is the shop’s specialty, featuring over 30 varieties of loose leaf teas. French press coffee and hot chocolate are also on the menu for those would prefer to indulge in snacks without the restaurant’s signature beverage. Lunch options include beans on toast, salads, smoked salmon quiche, jacket potatoes with several options of fixings, and the Earl of Sandwich (an assortment of six delicate tea sandwiches). For a fantasy experience, order the Duchess of Bedford’s Formal Afternoon Tea, a three-tiered cake stand with sandwiches, scones, and petits fours served on fine antique bone china. For little ladies who sip air from plastic cups, there’s the Nursery Tea selection with PB&J, seasonal fruit, homemade cookies and candies, and decaffeinated tea or hot chocolate. The tea room also has a gift shop with rare European antiques, imported teas, and tea-related treasures.

  • Huss Brewing Co. Taproom at Uptown Plaza

100 E. Camelback Rd., Suite 160 Central Phoenix

    602-441-4677

This Tempe brewery made its way to Uptown Plaza, settling in a back-corner spot with a cozy patio and open dining area. At Huss Brewing Co. you can grab an icy cold helping of the Papago Orange Blossom or the Koffee Kolsch, which is especially encouraged during happy hour — 3 to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Pitchers are $6, and wine is $1 off (oh yeah, there’s also wine and cider). But the big treats are the $3 sliders. We recommend the caprese, but the green chile pork and roast beef are also pretty killer.

  • jade bar

5700 E. McDonald Dr. Paradise Valley

    855-245-2051

Perched on the north side of Camelback Mountain amid the luxurious Sanctuary resort, this lounge is as good as any in the Valley to get that we're-not-in-Phoenix-anymore feel. The floor-to-ceiling windows provide a prime view overlooking Paradise Valley, and the people-watching view is nearly as good. And, of course, jade is never better during the magnificent Arizona sunsets, when the sky seems even more beautiful while sitting on jade's patio with a signature cocktail nearby. Happy hour runs from 4 to 7 p.m. Read our review.

  • Lucky Strike Lanes and Lounge

50 W. Jefferson St. Central Phoenix

    602-732-5490

"Upscale" and "bowling alley" aren't words that you often hear in the same sentence. Until Lucky Strike Lanes opened at CityScape, that is. This California-based chain isn't your typical bowling alley, full of church groups and old people smoking cigarettes in a dingy lounge. Nope, Lucky Strike is far more posh. A dozen lanes for rolling are outfitted with flat screens and plush couches. There are two full bars, three pool tables, free Wi-Fi, and of course, a full menu of upscale bar food. If you plan to visit on a Friday or Saturday night, be prepared to wait. Live DJs and exceptional service should make the time fly by, however.

  • Pretty Penny

509 E Roosevelt St Downtown Phoenix

Downtown Phoenix’s Roosevelt Row is replete with places to eat and drink. Pretty Penny adds a dose of luxury, serving seafood towers, well-crafted pastas and steaks from a sleek, warm space. The restaurant recently moved across the street into the former home of bar and restaurant Disco Dragon. Pretty Penny is the result of a notable culinary collaboration. Downtown barmen Sam Olguin and Brenon Stuart, who own Killer Whale Sex Club and F.Y.P.M., teamed up with two alumni of Scottsdale's Virtù family of restaurants, chef Marcelino Ramos and hospitality pro Ivan Herrera. The team sets the tone with a complimentary pour of celebratory bubbles. From there, try Ramos’ fan-favorite octopus tostada or the creamy, spicy lamb ragu with paccheri noodles. You’ll see the affable chef moving between the hidden kitchen and a guest-facing chef’s bar, finishing dishes there before dropping them off to diners. The bar menu is equally thoughtful, technique-driven and flavor-forward. The charred tomato martini, with its floral hint of basil, is the perfect pairing with pasta.
