  • Cave Creek Coffee Co.

6033 E. Cave Creek Rd. Cave Creek

    480-488-0603

There's little we love more than an afternoon hike through the Jewell of the Creek Preserve, then a quick jump over to the Cave Creek Coffee Company for wine tasting, good food and a little live music. After a post-hike cabernet, we go for the Vegetarian Sandwich, piled with roasted Portobello mushroom, fresh mozzarella, tomato slices, fresh spinach, and pesto on toasted garlic bread. Also nice is the aptly-named Big Ass Burrito (also available as the Half Ass Burrito if you're feeling like a smaller portion), full of fresh lettuce and cheeses, beans and meat of your choice. Try the Smoked Salmon Sandwich, flaky fish smothered in a tangy sauce and folded neatly into fresh-baked bread. Visit the roomy, wood-paneled wine bar and sample more than two dozen different brands by the glass while munching on gourmet eats or check your e-mail on your laptop using the free wi-fi network. On certain nights, you can also take in a concert in the backyard, open-air performance space, where various acoustic and Americana musicians strum and sing. Then again, if you're on the run, just grab a cup of fresh-roasted java to go from the coffee bar.

  • Central Records

824 N. Central Ave. Downtown Phoenix

    602-638-0433

On a quiet stretch of Central Avenue, close to the bustling district of Roosevelt Row, Central Records has put down roots. This new space is a wine bar, record store, coffee shop and cafe all in one. Stop by for a coffee, and then work on your laptop until it’s time to order a bottle of wine to split with friends. In the evenings, DJs spin vinyl records while a giant disco ball casts sparkles across the warmly lit room. Sit near the window, at a table with raw wood banquette seating or at the low bar if you want to chat to the barista-cum-bartender about the latest offerings.

  • Cheuvront Wine & Cheese Cafe

1326 N. Central Ave. Central Phoenix

    602-307-0022

State Senator Ken Cheuvront's entry into the great Phoenix restaurant sweepstakes is a wine and cheese bar with plenty of vino and fromage to choose from. If you go, try the lamb roulade and one of the cheese plates with nuts and dried fruit. For dessert, the pumpkin bread pudding is delish. Like we said, Cheuvront has issues.

  • District American Kitchen and Wine Bar

    320 N. 3rd St. Central Phoenix

    602-817-5400

The intimate-sounding "American Kitchen & Wine Bar" tag won't fool anyone into thinking District is some kind of funky foodie destination . The wine list isn't distinctive and the menu doesn't stray into innovation, but there are impressive details that defy expectations, like boutique ingredients and local produce. Keep this place in mind if you're looking for a decent downtown dinner, but steer clear of the lunch rush unless you're craving mediocre, overpriced sandwiches. Read our review.

  • Dozo Izakaya

    440 W. Warner Rd. #104 Tempe

    480-785-4938

In Japan, an izakaya is a drinking establishment that serves small plates of Japanese comfort foods. Dozo Izakaya really delivers on the food portion of this concept, with a menu of grilled small plates such as sunagimo, or chicken gizzard; hotaru-ikayaki, or baby squid; and a house favorite, tako-yaki, also known as fried octopus balls (no, really — try them!). Japanese sweet wines and soft drinks are available, as are more traditional noodle- and meat-based dishes and bowls. Spices run hot but can be tamed to your liking.
  • Duck and Decanter

1651 E. Camelback Rd. East Phoenix

    602-274-5429

Going to Duck and Decanter for a lunchtime sandwich, or a Nooner as they call it here, is like visiting an Icelandic cafe. The A-frame, faux chalet structure is not just a sandwich joint, but also a small grocery, wine bar, cheese shop, and of course, deli. To take your sandwich to go is to deprive yourself of a major part of the experience here. Why not browse the gourmet coffee selection and pick up a canister of Café Du Monde coffee and chicory? Or take a stroll through the place, pondering whether you want to dine at one of the cozy downstairs tables, the spacious upstairs dining space, or the twinkle-lit, dog-friendly patio? Or do you just order your giant sandwich right off, deciding between the Reuben, the Genoa, or classic roasted turkey? The Duck originated in 1972, growing to three locations then sizing back down to this one, but this impressive spread not far from the original location at 16th Street and Camelback Road is a forever gem in Phoenix's dining scene. D&D also has a message for "Beloved Restaurant Guests" on its website: "Take out? YES! Curbside? YES! Delivery? YES! We've been doing just that for nearly 50 years, and we're really good at it."

  • First Draft Book Bar

    300 W. Camelback Road #1 Central Phoenix

    602-274-0067

Walk into First Draft Book Bar, and you’ll immediately know that you’re in a different kind of bar. Located inside Changing Hands Bookstore, it’s a place where you can grab a magazine before you slide up to the counter with your laptop and order wine or a craft beer. The vibe is chill but cerebral. Serious and fun conversations happen at the bar, where servers handle drink and food orders with ease. Find a seat at one of the high-top tables, wander the aisles and peruse books, or catch a talk by a visiting author in the open room behind the stacks. A chalkboard menu showcases a variety of Arizona wines and locally brewed beers. Alcohol flights are available, as are small bites such as hummus, pretzels with cheese dip, artichoke dip and cookies. First Draft Book Bar is the perfect place for chilling with friends, engaging in animated discussions or reading quietly with a glass of wine in hand.
  • Garage-East

    3000 E. Ray Rd. #7 Gilbert

    480-493-7151

Garage-East isn’t a bar in the traditional sense, but it is the perfect spot to sip away the afternoon. Located in the Barnone collection of shops at Agritopia, this wood-paneled bar serves wines by the glass to enjoy inside or on the Italy-meets-Gilbert-farm-style patio. And you won’t find these wines at any other bar. Garage-East works with Arizona growers to make its own blends and bottles. Unique offerings include the Garage East Breakfast Wine made with white wine and fruit juice and the Sonoran Spritz, an herbal, bitter and refreshing bright orange drink that helps combat the desert heat. On Sundays, this spot serves brunch, and at other times, food offerings include a cheese and meat board, soft pretzel and hot pressed sandwiches.

  • Ground Control Coffee & Wine Bar

4860 N Litchfield Rd. Litchfield Park

    623-535-9066

Ground Control Coffee & Wine Bar is exactly what the name implies: a home base for all things delicious in Litchfield Park. Coffeehouse by day, wine bar by night, this café on steroids serves everything from cappuccinos and signature blended drinks to cheese boards and house-made gelato. They’ll even pour a shot of Bailey’s over your favorite gelato flavor for $6.95. The restaurant is run by husband and wife team Tara and Sean, who gained a passion for fine wine, great coffee, delicious food, and world-class beers while living in Europe. After settling in the Valley, the two wanted to create a place filled with their favorite things. However, what it’s not a central hub for is work or browsing the web – there’s no Wi-Fi here. Instead, Ground Control encourages patrons to hold community gatherings, hang out with a friend, or at least enjoy a quiet afternoon with a book.

  • Hillstone

2650 E. Camelback Rd. East Phoenix

    602-957-9700

Hillstone is basically Houston's 2.0 -- a familiar American menu and even some familiar employees from the old spot at the Esplanade, now in a stunning new space that feels like a modern tribute to Frank Lloyd Wright. Filled with warm wood, contemporary art, dark red booths, and the dull roar of a hundred conversations over soft jazz and the clattering of dishes, the dining room gives way to an elbow-to-elbow packed bar, which spills onto a gorgeous patio with trees and a fireplace. Unlike Houston's, they serve sushi, but everything else, from the prime rib to the tortilla soup, is known territory. Read our review.

  • Kazimierz Wine & Whiskey Bar

7137 E. Stetson Dr. Central Scottsdale

    480-946-3004

Kaz Bar was vino-only from its founding in 2001 until original owner Peter Kasperski closed it 17 years later. Enter restaurateur Tommy Plato of Second Story Liquor Bar fame, who reopened the posh lounge in 2019, adding a focus on rare and distinctive whiskeys and a bespoke supper club atmosphere big on leather and wood. Connoisseurs can indulge in any of its curated selection of Scotch, whiskeys, bourbons, and ryes of the high-end, imported, and single-barrel ilk. There are such small-batch favorites and rarities mixed in the selection of over 40 options. Wine lovers needn’t worry, though, as Kaz Bar still has a surfeit of red, white, and sparkling wines, uncorking bliss to pair perfectly with a food menu of snacks and bites with Italian and Asian influences such as a Korean pork belly served in a lobster roll and cacio pepe.

  • La Bocca Urban Pizzeria + Wine Bar

    699 S. Mill Ave. Tempe

    480-967-5244

It's rather fitting that the name of this cozy pizzeria and wine bar roughly translates to "the mouth" in Italian, as yours will certainly be put to good use when visiting. Its list of vino favors exotic reds from around the world, allowing one to be whisked away to the vineyards of Argentina for some Punto Final Malbec followed by a glass or two of Peter Lehmann-brand cabernet from Australia. The beer selection is also of an international bent, offering such Belgian imports as Wittekerke Wheat Ale and Lindy Framboise along with bottles of microbrews and local favorites. On the menu you'll find gourmet bruschetta, salads, sandwiches, as well as a number of La Bocca's signature pizzas. Read our review.

  • LDV Winery

    6951 E. 1st St. Central Scottsdale

    480-664-4822

LDV Winery uses a hand-crafted, all-natural approach to winemaking. Every 45-60 days we go thru the time consuming process of racking each barrel to remove sediment from our reds. We prefer this gentle process, rather than adding substances or using filters to clarify our wines. Our approach is gentler, creates a better mouth feel, and provides more flavor. Many of the substances used in clarifying wine are not what we want in our wine. Although it is more expensive and time consuming, we believe it truly matters.

  • The Lost Leaf

    914 N. 5th St. Central Phoenix

    602-258-0014

The Lost Leaf is part beer and wine joint, part arts-scene culture hub. Occupying a historic Fifth Street bungalow mere steps from Roosevelt Row, the walls, rafters, and bathrooms are adorned with works by local creatives. A nook beside the bar and a backyard stage hosts musicians and DJs across every genre. And it's a popular pit stop on First Fridays, Third Fridays, and most other nights of the month. The curated beer and wine selection is vast, boasting ales, lagers, stouts, and other intoxicating brews in bottles and cans, as well as vino, meads, and even sake. Lost Leaf has been arty, cultural, and cool since it was established in 2006 and opened full time in 2007, back when it was one of the few RoRo spots where you could buy a round. After a shaky period during the pandemic, the Lost Leaf changed hands, but is back on track with plenty of live music and cold brews.
