  • Amuse Bouche Gourmet Bistro & Catering

    17058 W. Bell Rd. Surprise

    623-322-8881

Call it a stroke of culinary good luck that French-trained chefs Snir and Kierstin Mor landed in Surprise, an exurb of Phoenix hammered by chain restaurants, to open Amuse Bouche, their BYOB country-French bistro. Open for lunch, dinner, and offering one of the best Sunday breakfasts in the Valley, the tiny eatery features short and carefully crafted menus that change with the seasons. Be on the lookout for exquisite quiche Lorraine, a mouthwateringly moist Berkshire pork chop, heady cioppino, and noteable desserts like an intensely rich dark chocolate pot de crème and a shareable hunk of spongy bread pudding drizzled in a woozy homemade caramel sauce.

  • Amy's Baking Company

7366 E. Shea Blvd. North Scottsdale

    480-607-0677

Perhaps the Valley's most notorious restaurant, featured on British celebrity chef's reality show Kitchen Nightmares, Amy's is far better known for its irascible owners than it is the food coming out of the kitchen. That being said, the pastries in the case look spectacular.

  • Barrelhouse American Kitchen & Cocktails

2050 N. Alma School Rd. Chandler

    480-857-8877

This Chandler restaurant serving well-crafted cocktails and (mostly) satisfying plates of polished comfort food seems to want to be either a casual high-end restaurant or a mod-ish lounge. But if you can get past its inability to put you in the cocoon of either, there are several good dishes to enjoy, including an excellent French Country-style flatbread pizza, luscious baked artisan goat cheese crepes, and a sensational lobster baked chile relleno. Don’t miss out on the signature cocktails. Arranged by flavor composition, they deliver on both uniqueness and taste.

2401 E. Camelback Rd. East Phoenix

    602-468-0700

If you've got the expense account, they've got the time, and the ticket price. Décor is light and bright, and not as stuffy as you might expect. The cuisine? Continental, without being too challenging: steaks, fillet of sole, duck confit, French onion soup. Not the worst of this sort of fare we've had, nor the best. Somewhere in the middle. Too bad the bill doesn't reflect that, but hey, what did you expect? It is the Ritz-Carlton, people. And anyway, the company credit card should be able to handle it, right? As long as the green-eyeshade boys in accounting don't study the bill too closely.

  • Bistro du Lac

    8320 N. Hayden Rd., D101 North Scottsdale

    480-203-2075

Bistro du Lac’s interior features bright red walls with white accents, sparkly chandeliers, a separate bar and a bakery case; outside, a pair of patios on the man-made Lake Marguerite are set with white-linen-covered tables. The menu is classically French with some culinary tweaks. Cream of mushroom soup is served with brie-filled profiteroles; Caesar salad is dressed with roasted tomatoes. Mostly, though, Bistro du Lac offers Gallic favorites like beef bourguignon, bouillabaisse, and escargot. A pastry menu offers fresh-baked breads, croissants, macarons, and cakes. Berraud Dufour's much-loved crepes are also offered here. Sweet classics like crepe au citron (lemon and sugar with strawberry jam) and savory crepes like la reined, a mélange of grilled mushrooms, pulled chicken, Gruyere and béchamel sauce.

  • Bistro Provence

8900 E. Pinnacle Peak Rd. North Scottsdale

    480-473-2884

With everything from frogs’ legs to pizza, Bistro Provence provides a French fine dining experience that will satisfy every mood. The Bistro Pizza is topped with prosciutto, mushrooms, and Swiss and goat cheeses. But the restaurant also offers the Pizza Nonni, loaded with onion confit, Swiss and goat cheese, and escargot. Yes, snails and frogs’ legs on the menu definitely let diners know it’s a French restaurant. However, after one bite of the grenouilles Méditerranéennes sautéed in butter, shallots, garlic and parsley, you’ll forget all about the amphibian it once was and focus instead on the delicate battering and the vaguely sweet meat. For more American palates, Bistro Provence offers dishes like poussin roti (oven-roasted Cornish hen topped with herbes de provence and Dijon mustard), côte de porc (grilled pork chop with sage and mustard rub, ratatouille, and roasted potatoes), and boeuf cocotto camarguais (tender beef stew with tomato, sweet bell peppers, and black olives).

    480-905-7979

While meat is certainly the main event at BLT Steak, the Scottsdale outpost of French chef Laurent Tourondel's successful empire, eating here is a memorable experience from the first nibble of warm chicken liver paté to the last bite of gooey espresso-chocolate chip cookies (both gratis). It's hip but comfortable, with amiable, attentive service and lots of thoughtful touches - like the famous freebie Gruyére popovers - along with top-notch steaks. Read our review.

The French take their crepes seriously, of course, and Chez Vous is proof of that. Owners Sophie and Frederic moved to Arizona from France in October 2014, then opened a quaint crepe shop near Gainey Ranch. There, you'll find 28 crepe options. Favorites include a savory combo of melted Swiss cheese, a fried egg, and shaved ham, or a sweet crepe with Nutella, bananas, and chocolate. Continental breakfast plates and sandwiches are also available.

  • Coup Des Tartes

1725 E. Osborn Rd. East Phoenix

    602-212-1082

Coup des Tartes may be in a new location, but the French-styled neighborhood bistro retains much of the spirit of the original. Now located in a historic 1922 brick bungalow, the restaurant has retained much of its cozy appeal. The menu specializes in old-school bistro classics, including a fine take on filet mignon served with Yukon gold mashed potatoes and spinach. A slightly more exotic house specialty, Moroccan lamb shank, served with couscous and stone fruits and veggies, is a bit on the tame side. There’s a pastry chef on duty, so it’s worth leaving room for classic desserts like the house berry tarte and apple butter upside down cake. The restaurant also offers lunch service on Tuesdays through Fridays, where you can enjoy classic Parisian café staples, including a fine croque monsieur.

Found at the Biltmore Fashion Park, Crepe House Cafe offers many savory dishes of note, but the best one may be the chicken shawarma. This crepe is a haunting combination of grilled chicken breast, tomatoes, pickles, olive, and garlic pesto. For a sweeter order, try the s'mores crepe, piled with marshmallows, Biscotti cookies, and Nutella. Crepe House Cafe also boasts an impressive coffee menu.

  • Cupz N' Crepes

    4232 E. Chandler Blvd. #8 Ahwatukee

    480-706-1963

There's nothing quite so perfect as the combination of fresh coffee and a perfectly-prepared crepe. And lucky for us, when we're looking to satisfy the craving we need not look any farther than Cupz N' Crepes in Ahwatukee. The south Phoenix eatery specializes in made-to-order crepes of both the sweet and savory variety filled with fresh meats, veggies and fruits. We particularly enjoy the The Nat, a unique buffalo-style crepe with chicken, hot sauce and blue cheese crumbles. For those looking for more traditional fare they have a selection of Nutella crepes as well as the Paris street-food classic: sugar and lemon juice. They also offer a breakfast menu and an assortment of salads including a classic chicken Caesar and a cranberry spinach salad with poppy seed dressing. Aside from the wallet-friendly eats they also boast some of the Valley's best coffee. Thanks to the free Wi-Fi, we may never have to leave.

  • Delice Bistro

    690 S. Mill Ave. Tempe

    480-656-8847

The folks at this Mill Avenue, European-flavored bistro have created a menu more stylish and complicated than one would expect to find in a bistro that caters mostly to ASU students and visitors to the next-door movie multiplex. But, like a lot of ambitious bistros, Delice (pronounced Da-lees) has yet to arrive at greatness. This pâtisserie serves marvelous baked goods and pastries, and its breakfast foods are highly flavored and neatly made. Baked goods and hot, strong coffee are a staple here, as are paninis and crepes both savory and sweet. Read our review.

The folks behind the successful Essence Catering have branched out with this laid-back Tempe café, which they remodeled with environmentally friendly materials. Quiche Lorraine and spanakopita are house specialties; the warm, open-faced steak sandwich, with sauteed mushrooms, Cabernet butter, and Maytag blue cheese, is another tempting option. And if you're looking for something lighter, the salads here are delicious, made with organic greens. Homemade cookies and pastries make for a sweet finish. Read our review.

  • Francine

4710 N. Goldwater Blvd. Central Scottsdale

    480-690-6180

Patrons are immediately immersed in European elegance when they walk into Francine. The exposed ceilings and bar take center stage, leaving room for seating that feels intimate and offers plenty of people-watching. The restaurant itself is a menagerie of bustling voices in an open kitchen, servers in formal attire and a dose of patrons in sequins and sparkling dresses. It isn’t just about the atmosphere, though. The French cuisine is bold and sexy. All dishes are presented like colorful paint palettes with herbs and edible flowers — entrees focus on including veggies, homemade pasta and rich sauces minus the butter. For starters, the salty, savory tuna tartare and the grilled octopus are fan favorites. Other standouts include the Chilean Seabass and the bone marrow bucatini. At Francine, expect both a visual and culinary experience.

    5345 N. 7th Ave. Central Phoenix

    602-277-0101

This market/café comes to the Valley courtesy of Kevin Lentz, a Phoenix transplant who grew up in the South and learned to cook in New Orleans. The restaurant's name was inspired by the small neighborhood groceries and cafés that served homemade food around where Lentz grew up. French Grocery offers a variety of baked goods and sweets including croissants, beignets, brioche, cinnamon rolls, baguettes, Southern cornbread, buttermilk biscuits, madeleines, French macarons, crème brûlée and pot de crème as well as French press coffee and espresso. • The Great Pho King Food Truck

    No address listed Central Phoenix

    480-331-8638

The Great Pho King food truck comes from Mike Baum (front of the "house") and chef Eddy Pham, who met just a year ago and realized they would need each other to enter -- and be successful in -- the street food biz. The menu includes two types of Vietnamese noodle soup, or pho, both of which come with rice noodles, meat, sliced onions, and cilantro. The Pho King also serves up other Asian fusion fare such as Vietnamese sandwiches (banh mi), fresh (and refreshing!) spring rolls (goi cuon) and crispy crepes (banh xeo). They also offer two grilled cheese dishe with Gruyere, cheddar, havarti, and Brie. Each of the items ranges from $4 to $8.50, with the most expensive option being the crispy crepes.

4301 N. Scottsdale Rd. Central Scottsdale

    480-425-3025

It may be a student-run cafe, but it's from the talented chefs-in-training at the renowned Scottsdale Culinary Institute. Service can be a challenge (learning curve and all), but the food is usually topnotch, and prices can't be beat (roast leg of lamb for $8.95). The menu is short but imaginative, with a selection of soups, salads, panini, pizzas and a few full-plate entrees, all influenced by the robust flavors of the Italian and French Riviera. • Le Napoleon Pastries and Cafe

    15820 N. 35th Ave. North Phoenix

    602-978-2459

These days it's easy to find a bakery that specializes in the pastry trend of the week. Cupcakes? Yup. Macarons? You bet. But what about a place with an array of sweet delights ranging from hard-to-find European pastries to handmade chocolates. For that, you'll want Le Napeleon bakery on the west side of town. It's there that Swiss-born pastry chef Gerald Cretton crafts delicate eclairs, picture-perfect fruit tarts, and light-as-air cream puffs on a day-to-day basis. The bakery doesn't offer much in the way of charm, but that's only because Cretton let's his food do the talking. When you visit, don't miss the bakery's namesake pastry, the Mille-feuille, or Napoleon. It features layers of fluffy pastry cream between two sheets of pastry dough. Cretton also bakes made-to-order cakes with a binder full of past creations to serve as inspiration. Read our review.

Serving a menu of reasonably priced regional specialties from France, including scrumptious dishes of traditional Alsatian cuisine influenced by next-door Germany, this unpresumptuous restaurant, featuring breakfast, lunch, and dinner in Scottsdale's Seville Shopping Center, seems to have gathered all the charms of its homeland and gathered them into a single, neighborhood French bistro plopped down in an upscale shopping mall. Don’t miss the choucroute royale with homemade, Riesling-braised sauerkraut, an assortment of French pate, and the flammekueche, the Alsatian answer to pizza.

  • Le Sans Souci

7030 E. Bella Vista Dr. Cave Creek

    480-488-2856

Assuming you don't live in or near Cave Creek, it may take you a while to get up to Le Sans Souci. But we promise the drive is worth it. Open since the '90s, Le Sans Souci (it means "without worry") serves French fare during brunch, lunch, and dinner in its cozy, tiled dining room. We always want to start with the onion soup, preferably topped with melted cheese and a small piece of bread. The Crepes Delice, two crepes packed with mushrooms and crab in a bechamel sauce, is rich and filling, or if we're craving something more casual, the croque monsieur sandwich takes us back to afternoons in Paris cafes. And with a dessert menu that offers classic delights such as crème brûlée and cherries jubilee, we always leave Le Sans Souci full and satisfied.

  • Merci French Cafe and Pastisserie

7620 E. Indian School Rd. Central Scottsdale

    480-947-2777

If you ever dined at chef-owner Duc Liao's past restaurant Scratch, you are familiar with a distinct French style in décor, with ornate wallpaper patterns contrasting with simple white walls and fashion photography spattering the walls. Merci is no different, though it has been altered from the original design. While breakfast and lunch options like crepes and salads are up for grabs and dinner includes a ribeye with a creamy pepper sauce or plump scallops with crisp veggies, Liao's greatest triumph comes in the pastry case. The ornate desserts in inventive flavor combinations are near perfectly executed. For French food lovers, this spot is a must-stop.

  • Merci French Café & Patisserie

7620 E. Indian School Road, Suite 103 Central Scottsdale

    480-947-2777

Merci French Café & Patisserie is a cozy French café and bakery that manages to bring a dash of Parisian café culture to its suburban Scottsdale strip-mall location. Chef and owner Duc Liao, formerly of Scratch Pastries, continues to impress with a lineup of gorgeously crafted French pastries. But the restaurant’s straightforward menu of café classics, which includes quiche, French sandwiches (including a fine croque madame), salads, and dinner entrees, is sometimes subject to weak execution and kitchen inconsistencies. The house black truffle burger is loaded with Swiss cheese and mushrooms, yet under-seasoned and bland. Beef bourguignon offers a lovely, if thin, red burgundy sauce, but is marred by strange additions like melted yellow cheese. For dessert, head to the pastry counter, where you’ll find elegantly-constructed fruit tarts and crumbles.

You haven't eaten Asian until you've had a Tottie Roll, a fried pork roll wrapped in lettuce and mint leaves, and the house specialty at this extra-popular Asian Fusion restaurant. Named for Chef Tottie Kaya, who trained as a professional chef in childhood, these rolls are the talk of culinary circles and the reason that people drive from all over town to this newest location in Tottie's local chain. Diners also crave Tottie's Kang Keow Wan (Green Curry Chicken) with mushrooms, as well as the super-spicy Thai Basil over white or brown rice. Don't leave without trying the house-made coconut ice cream and the fried plantains for dessert; you'll be glad you did.

  • Palatte

    606 N. 4th Ave. Central Phoenix

    602-462-9400

Whether it's light rail, the new ASU developments, or just business as usual, there's a lot going on in downtown Phoenix. We're glad to see so much happening, but sometimes we just need a break from it — a few moments of peace and quiet to recharge. Palatte is perfect for that, an oasis of leisure in the midst of our bustling city. Located in the Cavness House, a historic home with a cute front porch and a sprawling yard that functions as one big patio, the restaurant has a laid-back setting we can really appreciate, especially on a hectic day. We love the food here, too. Homemade pastries, a frittata of the day, roasted sweet potato pancakes with spiced mascarpone, and a variety of "mish-mashes" (egg scrambles) are just a few of the reasons we stop by Palatte when we're famished. The caramelized onion tart is another favorite. When we're ready to sip a cup of coffee, refuel on light, creative dishes, and reflect on a gorgeous Arizona day, Palatte is the place to be.
