  • Park Place Bar and Grill

7373 E Scottsdale Mall Central Scottsdale

    480-424-6819

Located in Scottsdale Mall, home to the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, the former Orange Table restaurant has been remodeled and had its bar expanded. Live music and a generous specialty drinks menu are new features alongside one-of-a-kind breakfast dishes like chimichurri corned beef hash and flannels, which are a sort of down-home breakfast skillet meal. Burgers and sandwiches round out the recently revamped breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu.

  • Amuse Bouche Gourmet Bistro & Catering

    17058 W. Bell Rd. Surprise

    623-322-8881

Call it a stroke of culinary good luck that French-trained chefs Snir and Kierstin Mor landed in Surprise, an exurb of Phoenix hammered by chain restaurants, to open Amuse Bouche, their BYOB country-French bistro. Open for lunch, dinner, and offering one of the best Sunday breakfasts in the Valley, the tiny eatery features short and carefully crafted menus that change with the seasons. Be on the lookout for exquisite quiche Lorraine, a mouthwateringly moist Berkshire pork chop, heady cioppino, and noteable desserts like an intensely rich dark chocolate pot de crème and a shareable hunk of spongy bread pudding drizzled in a woozy homemade caramel sauce.

  • Coup Des Tartes

1725 E. Osborn Rd. East Phoenix

    602-212-1082

Coup des Tartes may be in a new location, but the French-styled neighborhood bistro retains much of the spirit of the original. Now located in a historic 1922 brick bungalow, the restaurant has retained much of its cozy appeal. The menu specializes in old-school bistro classics, including a fine take on filet mignon served with Yukon gold mashed potatoes and spinach. A slightly more exotic house specialty, Moroccan lamb shank, served with couscous and stone fruits and veggies, is a bit on the tame side. There’s a pastry chef on duty, so it’s worth leaving room for classic desserts like the house berry tarte and apple butter upside down cake. The restaurant also offers lunch service on Tuesdays through Fridays, where you can enjoy classic Parisian café staples, including a fine croque monsieur.

  • The Farm at South Mountain

    6106 S. 32nd St. South Phoenix

    602-276-6360

The only thing we don't love about this amazing getaway is that it is closed during the summer, when we most want its comforting cool ambiance and tasty lunches. Its pecan tree grove provides canopies of shaded, outdoor dining; its acres of green grass open onto organic gardens and three separate restaurants(one each for breakfast, lunch, and dinner),an art gallery, and a gift shop we can never resist. First, though, we dine on some of the fresh homegrown food (Pecan Turkey Waldorf Salad is perfect for lunch from the Farm Kitchen; the Cavatappi from Quiessence, the dinner restaurant, is a great suppertime meal) around. this verdant escape is only minutes from downtown Phoenix, but we'd gladly drive for an hour to get to it!

  • Il Vinaio Restaurant

    270 W. Main St. Mesa

    480-649-6476

This uniquely elegant wine bar and restaurant (its name means "wine merchant" in Italian) serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Chef James Bacon prides himself on a talent for pairing food and wine, and it's evident at this family-owned downtown Mesa staple. Start with the Share Platter, a mélange of roasted vegetables, olives, artichokes, caper berries and soppressata. Follow that with a Caprese Salad with grape tomatoes, Mozzarella, basil and arugula and drizzled with balsamic vinegar. Fans of fresh game will love the Half-Pound Free Range Nilgai Antelope Burger, served with house-cut fries and corn salad, or the Buttered Gnocchi with Duck Sausage, accompanied with zucchini, mushrooms, tomato and delicious herb pan sauce. Have the waiter select a wine flight to accompany your meal, and you'll leave happy.

  • Jalapeño Inferno

23587 N. Scottsdale Rd. North Scottsdale

    480-585-6442

Ah, Tacos al Carbon! We longed for them but couldn't find them anywhere, until Jalapeno Inferno blew into town. Now we can dine daily on these fresh tortillas filled with grilled strips of marinated chicken breast or beefsteak and studded with Jack cheese, onion, cilantro, avocado and tomatillo salsa. When we want a change and are feeling especially hungry, there's always the Chimichanga That Ate Nogales, another flour tortilla stuffed with shredded chicken or beef, then deep fried and garnished with sour cream and red enchilada sauce. Add a couple of margaritas to these or any other Jalapeno dish, and you've got a giant pile of happiness.

  • Tuscan Oven

    6751 N. Sunset Blvd. Glendale

    623-877-4760

Where can you find something called Uncle Vinnie's Secret Mussels, and why would you want to? Why, at Tuscan Oven, of course-and you'd want to because they are more delicious than words can adequately describe. A full pound of black mussels with chorizo in a spicy marinara and garlic sauce is just one of the delicacies at Arizona's hottest new dining destination, which celebrates the tastes and energy of Italy's spirited city cafes. Although we wonder if those places offer anything named The Wedgie, a scrumptious salad of wedged iceberg, blue cheese dressing, Roma tomato, crispy bacon and green onion. We like to pair this salad with Leonardo's Burger, a masterpiece of a meat loaf topped with bacon, provolone, and caramelized onion on Texas toast.

  • Vincent Market Bistro

3930 E. Camelback Rd. East Phoenix

    602-224-3727

Playing on the success of the Saturday market that runs from fall to spring in the parking lot outside of his eponymous fine dining establishment, chef Vincent Guerithault expanded and opened Vincent Market Bistro, just behind the main restaurant. Inside, the place is as charming as a country cottage, and outside, there's a pretty patio bordered by boxes of geraniums. It has many of the amenities of the popular weekly market — casual French fare and fresh pastries to eat in or take out, and a selection of imported gourmet ingredients for people willing to attempt Gallic cuisine in their own kitchens. And best of all, it's open for business all year long.
