    1515 N. 7th Ave. #170 Central Phoenix

    602-252-2541

This breakfast and brunch restaurant is a refreshing change in the sea of ordinary chain restaurants at Seventh Avenue and McDowell Road. Diners walk up to the counter to order dishes such as Pain Perdu, French toast made of banana bread pudding and topped with whisky caramel, and Tortilla Espanola, a traditional thick Spanish egg-and-potato omelet that looks like a savory slice of cake. If you’re feeling especially ravenous, try the B.M.O.C., a smoked pork chop with a waffle, two eggs, a Portuguese doughnut, and apple-maple syrup. A coffee counter that serves everything from flights of Japanese cold brew to refillable cups of regular Joe. Add a buttermilk pancake or Portuguese doughnut — a small, sweet, cakey concoction sprinkled with powdered sugar — to any order, and thank the breakfast gods for the home-cooked fare.

  • 32 SHEA

    10626 N. 32nd St. North Phoenix

    602-867-7432

A standalone building in the parking lot of a strip mall on 32nd Street and Shea, the intersection from which the eatery gets its name, this cozy little breakfast, lunch, and dinner spot is the kind of restaurant where you could easily spend hours. There is a drive-thru, a patio (larger than the restaurant), and inside, a small bar, a handful of dark wood tables, and an eclectic mix of music overhead. In addition to killer coffee and cocktails, there’s a small menu of easy and affordable dishes, including a satisfying sandwich called the OMG, featuring prosciutto, mascarpone, and figs, and a light yet wonderfully creamy artichoke and spinach dip. And if you like the hazelnut spread Nutella (and who doesn’t?) owner Rebecca Golden will add it to just about anything.

  • American Way Market Cafe

    1509 N. Arizona Ave. Chandler

    480-772-1877

American Way Market Café may be located inside a suburban antique mall in Chandler, but this is a full-fledged breakfast and lunch café serving excellent smokehouse sandwiches and flatbread pizzas made on baker Jared Allen’s Proof artisan bread, which is also made on-site. The spacious, airy café has a dining room steeped in nostalgia, the space featuring reclaimed wood and brick facades, and outfitted with vintage furniture and soda pop signage. Lunch menu highlights include the smoked turkey sandwich, made on thick-cut sourdough and layered with cheese and moist, flavorful slivers of turkey. The house pulled pork, served on a hefty brioche bun, is succulent and delicious. Flatbread pizzas are thick, doughy and substantial enough to make a meal. Lighter fare includes handcrafted salads and soups. The restaurant also carries an extensive selection of novelty soda pops.

The third of five restaurants to carry acclaimed restaurateur Silvana Salcido Esparza’s Barrio brand offers lunch and dinner menus featuring distinctive appetizers and entrées. • Bertha's Cafe

3134 E. Indian School Rd. East Phoenix

    602-955-1022

Whether this cute breakfast and lunch café in Phoenix is a dessert shop with an affordable savory side or a casual eatery with a sweet twist is more a question of semantics than of taste. Courtesy of Beth Goldwater (who is married to the grandson of the late five-term Arizona senator and 1964 presidential nominee), Bertha's serves up a tidy, affordable selection of simple and straightforward sandwiches and salads made with fresh ingredients and house made sauces. And thanks to a dessert case packed with homespun indulgences like thick chocolate brownies, decadent peanut butter cookies, and Goldwater's signature cheesecakes (some of the best in the Valley), a sweet ending -- or beginning -- to your meal is just a finger point away. • Breakfast Club

4400 N. Scottsdale Rd. Central Scottsdale

    480-222-2582

Expect a wait on weekends, even into the early afternoon sometimes. This is Old Town Scottsdale, after all, and the young, sunglasses-and-flip-flops crowd at the Breakfast Club is the very same contingent that keeps local nightlife meccas in business. Clearly, they have good taste, from the looks of the menu, which includes old-fashioned standards alongside some interesting variations on pancakes and eggs Benedict. We usually go for the cinnamon challah French toast or the spicy huevos con masa, washed down with a cup of strong coffee.

Butterfield's may look like a typical big-box restaurant, but it's pleasant, airy, and immaculate inside. Small details make it better than average, like extra-strong Boyd's coffee, fresh cream, and just-squeezed orange juice to start things off. The sprawling menu covers all the breakfast standards, but there are also unusual variations, such as portobello benedict with pesto Hollandaise sauce. If you're in the mood for dessert-as-breakfast, the mind-blowing oven-baked apple pancakes, dusted with powdered sugar, are worth the 30-minute wait.
