  • Amazing Jake's Pizza Factory

    1830 E. Baseline Rd. Mesa

    480-926-7499

Forget outdated children’s entertainment destinations like Chuck E. Cheese’s. Mesa is home to a 95,000 sq. ft. indoor playspace with everything from go-karts, laser tag, video games, and rock climbing to an old-fashioned carousel, a train ride, mini golf, bowling, and an interactive area to redeem your hard-earned tickets. All of that fun will make you work up an appetite, so it’s a good thing the indoor amusement extravaganza includes a restaurant with an all-you-can-eat buffet of pizzas, salads, soup, and pasta dishes like beef stroganoff. With kids’ favorites like mac n’ cheese and spaghetti served alongside more grown-up fare like Thai chicken peanut pizza and Florentine risotto (and wine and beer), this is one family-friendly destination that will please people of all ages. There are also desserts galore, including American standbys like chocolate chip cookies, berry crumble cake, cheesecake, and apple pie pizza – all of which can be made à la mode with a stop at the classic soft serve ice cream machine.

It's a creation by nationally renowned chef Mark Miller, but don't expect to see him - this is a corporate spin-off that simply hints at his famous Coyote Cafe of Santa Fe. Some dishes are first-rate, like soups and steaks. Others are resort fare fancied up with lots of spice.

  • Delhi Palace

    933 E. University Dr. #103 Tempe

    480-921-2200

Buffets can be hit or miss, and we've had far too many bland entrees overcooked under a heat lamp to claim the title of buffet buff. But one of our favorite lunch time destinations just happens to be a buffet that's finger lickin' good and easy on the wallet. Delhi Palace Cuisine of India offers an $8.95 buffet lunch that has plenty of options for the vegetarian and the carnivore alike. Plus, everything on the menu is very mild, so even the picky coworkers in your lunch crew can dig in to tasty tandoori chicken and flavorful curries.

  • E-San Sab Sab Thai Cuisine (Pete's Thai Cuisine)

12032 N. Cave Creek Rd. North Phoenix

    602-674-9999

The former chef and owner of Siam in Glendale and Thai E-San in Central Phoenix, Pete (or, in Thai, Tossapis) Pholtosa's newest venture at Cave Creek Road and Cactus features offerings of classic Thai cuisine as well as specific dishes from his former home in northeastern Thailand. In a bright room with white linen-topped tables and a wraparound bar, traditionalists can enjoy spicy red curry and hot and sour tom yum soup, but for a unique (and at times daring) gastronomical adventure, stick with the bold flavors of E-San-style dishes like larb and papaya salad. For an affordable sampling, you can't beat the $7.77 buffet from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. every day but Saturday.

  • Hong Kong Asian Diner

    9880 S. Rural Rd. #105 Tempe

    480-705-7486

A meal at Hong Kong Asian Diner in Tempe can feel like eating at your favorite aunt's house. That is, if your aunt owned a Chinese restaurant that served expertly executed Cantonese cuisine. This dated but welcoming Tempe restaurant owned by Choi and Bai Kuang offers a wide selection of harder-to-find Chinese dishes including rich deep-fried duck with taro, fresh garlic snow pea leaves, and salty dried scallop and egg white fried rice. For large entrées try the Peking duck, which arrives at your table in two parts: the first, as a platter of crispy, fat-laden skin and the second, a plate of moist duck meat. Read our review.

  • India Grill

    325 W. Elliot Rd. Tempe

    480-813-4443

This casual, family-owned restaurant in south Tempe serves up decent and affordable Indian cuisine with an emphasis on the northern region’s creamier, richer, and moderately spicy dishes and cooking styles. Skip the complimentary naan and order Kashmir naan or onion kulcha to pair with top-notch dishes like lamb curry, mutter paneer, and chicken tikka masala. Like butter? Order up the popular Punjabi dish, butter chicken. A lunch and dinner buffet for around ten bucks a person features a nice (but only slightly spicy) selection of vegetarian and meat dishes in addition to desserts.

  • India Oven

    1315 S. Gilbert Rd. #5204 Mesa

    480-892-3333

India Oven has been serving an extensive menu of Indian specialties for years. The restaurant -- which also operates as a banquet hall -- offers lunch and dinner buffets, as well as traditional dining. And with more than a dozen vegetarian menu items, there's likely to be something for everyone. We enjoy the flavorful chicken tikka masala as well as the mild, creamy shrimp korma, which features tender plump shrimp swimming in a buttery sauce full of Indian spices. With a side of freshly baked naan, you'll be in a satisfying meal. It's just a bonus that the service at this Mesa spot is alway friendly, attentive, and fast.

  • Indian Delhi Palace Cuisine of India

5104 E. McDowell Rd. East Phoenix

    602-244-8181

From crisp, white tablecloths and ornate Indian décor to the incredible, complex aromas wafting from the kitchen, everything about Indian Delhi Palace hints at a good meal to come, even before you crack open the menu. And sure enough, once the royal feast kicks in, you'll be dazzled by the flavors here — smoky chicken tikka masala, luscious lamb korma, and vibrant palak paneer (creamed spinach with cubes of cheese) are just a few of the standout dishes, which we like to wash down with a frothy yogurt lassi. As for the buttery garlic naan, it's simply fantastic, probably worthy of its own "Best of" for a perfect balance of crisp and doughy textures (not to mention how handy it is for cleaning up every last drop of curry on our plate). And come dessert time, try the creamy rice pudding or some syrup-soaked gulab jamun, even if you think you don't have room. A meal this tasty can't end with anything less than a food coma.

  • India's Flame

    4427 S. Rural Rd., #3 and #4 Tempe

    480-456-0155

At India's Flame, to start, the naan has a flaky, wafery bite and gives you the same warming goodness as buttered popcorn. During lunch, well-spiced cups of chai are included with a sprawling buffet, and so are bracing glasses of mango lassi. You can pick and choose from the extensive menu or ride with the buffet. In either case, don't miss daal maharani, a creamy slurry of lentils with a mellow curry heat. A hearty, refined curry features bone-in goat, a shade chewy but rich and satisfying. The list of standouts goes on: tandoori chicken perfectly moist inside despite oven-blackening on the surface, coconut-milk-deepened korma packed with vegetables, and a nice carrot rendition of halwa for dessert. This hidden gem does it all.

  • New Hong Kong Restaurant

2328 E. Indian School Rd. East Phoenix

    602-954-9118

Don't be fooled by its once-grand appearance. Inside, this family-owned Chinese restaurant in central Phoenix is alive with authentic, flavorful Cantonese fare courtesy of Jian Yu, who was a chef in his hometown of Kaiping, a city in the Guangdong province in southern China, for over 32 years. Forget the Americanized menu and value buffet and ask for the Chinese menu, where slow-simmered soups, tangled nests of expertly prepared stir-fried noodles, and moist and marinated meats await. Start with the salt-and-pepper chicken wings, then move on to wonderfully tender black pepper beef filet, curry powder covered Singapore rice noodles, or Yu's specialty: the clay pot--where anything from tender beef brisket and daikon, to mutton and bean curd, to curly strands of pork stomach arrives as a boiling and highly flavorful form of Chinese comfort food. • New India Bazaar & Cuisine

    2544 N. 7th St. Central Phoenix

    602-712-0009

Hidden at the back of this small, Indian market is a no-frills Punjabi-minded eatery of top-notch chaat, or Indian street food offerings, flavorful vegetarian dishes, and less-successful meat-based ones. Try the popular samosa chaat, a dish akin to a savory exotic pie, for a light snack or appetizer, and then move on to stellar vegetarian offerings such as the spinach-based palak paneer or aloo mutter made from potatoes and peas in a creamy sauce. Opt for your entree as a thali dinner, and get an oversize TV tray filled with other Indian delights for a meal as flavorful as it is wallet-friendly.

  • Zaidi's Grill

1617 N. Granite Reef Rd. South Scottsdale

    480-947-4435

Featuring classic dishes made from family recipes and memories of meals in their hometown of Karachi, Syed and Tabassum Zaidi, owners and chefs of this sparse but pleasant eatery in Scottsdale, call their authentic culinary style “cooking from the grass roots.” Featuring a small but solid menu of well-seasoned grilled meats, curries nearly tripping over themselves with flavor, and a few veggie selections, most dishes are exceptional, others satisfying, and all but one are under $10. Start with deep-fried spicy pakoras, then order the Indian cheese dish palak paneer with a grilled meat like Afghani boti (chicken marinated in green spices) or one of the Zaidi’s stellar curries like goat karahi, beef nihari, or the soon-to-be-famous chicken qorma.
