A few doors down from a 30-screen movie complex, Bamboo Grill whips up Chinese-style fare with Pan-Asian touches. Basic dishes like cashew chicken and shrimp with lobster sauce are wonderful, and the house specialty, flaming pepper steak, is not to be missed. A good alternative to the neighborhood's many chain restaurants.

Possibly the only Thai restaurant in south Phoenix, this tiny, unassuming spot from owner and chef Chanpen Ramonaitis is a hidden gem filled with satisfying, expertly prepared classic Thai dishes as well as a few more unique creations. Start with street food favorites like fried fish cakes and crispy Thai toast, then move on to colorful curries rich with coconut milk, spicy salads kissed with lemon juice, and stir-fried dishes laden with crunchy vegetables and, if you choose, pieces of slick and tender roasted duck. • Chon Thai Food

2330 N. Alma School Rd #116, Chandler Chandler

    480-963-1247

Chon Thai Food is a casual, family-run Thai restaurant in Chandler with a crowd-pleasing menu of classic Thai curries and noodle stir-fries. What the menu lacks in hard-to-find regional dishes, it more than makes up for in consistently fresh and delicious fare. The crispy garlic chicken is a house specialty, a generously portioned dish of sweet-spicy chicken layered with deep-fried leaves of Thai basil. Another high point is the pumpkin chicken curry, a silky coconut curry served with fresh chunks of Kabocha squash. For dessert, there’s hardly a better way to finish your meal than with a plate of heart-shaped, sticky sweet rice served with spears of fresh mango.

  • E-San Sab Sab Thai Cuisine (Pete's Thai Cuisine)

12032 N. Cave Creek Rd. North Phoenix

    602-674-9999

The former chef and owner of Siam in Glendale and Thai E-San in Central Phoenix, Pete (or, in Thai, Tossapis) Pholtosa's newest venture at Cave Creek Road and Cactus features offerings of classic Thai cuisine as well as specific dishes from his former home in northeastern Thailand. In a bright room with white linen-topped tables and a wraparound bar, traditionalists can enjoy spicy red curry and hot and sour tom yum soup, but for a unique (and at times daring) gastronomical adventure, stick with the bold flavors of E-San-style dishes like larb and papaya salad. For an affordable sampling, you can't beat the $7.77 buffet from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. every day but Saturday.

  • Erawan Restaurant

    15615 N. 59th Ave. Glendale

    602-978-1641

Neat and low-key, this small family restaurant will surprise you with its stylish Thai cuisine and its super-affordable entrees. The spicy seafood combo, beef panang curry and superior satay are guaranteed to perk up your palate. Just the right place for a "hot" family night out.
  • Fresh Mint

    13802 N. Scottsdale Rd. #161 North Scottsdale

    480-443-2556

This vegetarian, vegan, and certified kosher eatery in Scottsdale puts a Vietnamese spin on meatless dishes, thanks to owner and chef Mai Ly, who, along with her husband, managed similar restaurants in Maui for more 20 years. On the corner of a strip mall, the atmosphere is casual and easygoing, with bright green walls, linen-topped tables, and '60s tunes in the ackground. Summer rolls, spicy lemongrass noodle soup, or green papaya salad are nice places to start; and for those seeking more "meaty" dishes, the vegetarian citrus "spare ribs," five-spice pho with marinated soy beef, or the guest favorite kung pao soy chicken, are some of the standouts.

  • Glai Baan

2333 E. Osborn Rd. Central Phoenix

    602-595-5881

This central Phoenix restaurant — the name translates to "far from home" — specializes in Thai street food and regional northeastern Thailand cooking. Chef and co-owner Pornsupak "Cat" Bunnag has roots in Bangkok and the Isan region of Thailand. That heritage is reflected in Glai Baan's tight menu of small plates, noodles and street food favorites. We recommend the kao soi, a northern Thai-style chicken curry dish; kanom jeeb (steamed pork dumplings); and Silom Road Moo ping pork skewers. And you can't tell anyone you dined at Glai Baan without trying the larb moo salad or the son-in-law eggs — a Thai street food delicacy. Pro tip: Parking is tough along this stretch of Osborn Road, so it may be wise to Lyft. Bonus: That'll allow you to try another one of Glai Baan's impressive cocktails. Reservations are strongly recommended for parties of two or more. Patio seating is available.

  • Krua Thai

    1601 E. Bell Rd. #A100 North Phoenix

    602-971-4988

A satisfying, cozy Thai café on the city’s north side, Krua ("kitchen" in Thai) serves up nearly 80 menu items of traditional dishes as well as several more uncommon specialties. Some of the flavors are more cautious than you might prefer, but you can depend on the meats to be tender, the vegetables fresh, and the dishes well prepared. Creations such as Thai sausage salad (yum guhn chiang), duck curry, and nam prik phao, Krua’s earthy and spicy housemade chili paste heavy with tender pieces of pork, are standouts.

  • LeDu Thai

    915 N 5th St Downtown Phoenix

    480-590-4116

From the outside, LeDu Thai is unassuming. The white stucco building sits back from the sidewalk, with an Edison-bulb-strewn patio lighting the way. Inside, this new downtown Phoenix eatery pops, from its vibrant decor to its bold dishes. The name LeDu comes from a Thai word that means “season.” The owners aim to celebrate family recipes using a rotating array of ingredients. The menu includes well-known southern Thai dishes, such as green papaya salad, pad thai and mango sticky rice, as well as less well-tread options. LeDu’s vegetarian riff on larb serves meaty oyster mushrooms in place of ground pork. The mushrooms are the ideal vehicle to take on the dish’s fiery chile-lime dressing. Among larger plates, try LeDu’s rendition of the comforting, zesty northern Thai curry noodle soup kao soi.
  • Line Thai Restaurant

9805 W. Bell Rd. Sun City

    623-977-8940

Spacious Thai restaurant from the former manager of Thai Rama, Rattiyaporn Chaiyasut, who has ventured out on her own and made a splash in Sun City. The place practically doubles as an art gallery, featuring huge Thai oil paintings and charming sculptures. The food ain't half bad, either, with all the standards done well, from pad Thai and satay to Thai curries and soups. The fried bananas are a must as an appetizer, though be careful, as it's easy to fill up on these toothsome fritters.

  • Lom Wong

218 E. Portland St. Downtown Phoenix

    602-675-0522

Regional Thai restaurant Lom Wong, set in a black bungalow at Second and Portland streets in downtown Phoenix, packs a piquant punch. Owners Yotaka and Alex Martin have firsthand experience with the robust flavors. Yotaka grew up in San Maket, Chiang Rai, a village in northern Thailand. She spent her childhood cooking traditional dishes alongside her mother and grandmother. Alex met Yotaka in Thailand, and the two began traveling the country together, returning to northern Thailand to dice shallots and stir-fry crab with Yotaka’s family whenever they had the chance. The menu at Lom Wong, which features dishes such as charcoal-grilled Thai sausage and eggplant in hand-pounded curry paste, is meant to be shared. Boozy cocktails complement the food well. Thunder’s Piña Colada includes fresh coconut cream and fish sauce, while the Bo Sang is crafted with vodka, lychee and rose water.

  • Mint Thai Cafe

    1111 N. Gilbert Rd. Gilbert

    480-497-5366

Some of the most satisfying Thai eats in the Valley, and well worth the drive to Gilbert, if you live elsewhere. On the other hand, if you reside in Gilbert, count your freakin' blessings, dood! A big menu, scrumptious curries mixed with coconut milk and topped with peanuts, pork-stuffed chicken wings, and a plate of spicy laab (a.k.a. larb), a salad of minced beef, pork or chicken, mixed with chiles and lime. Does it get any better? Yes, it does. Look at the menu and be amazed at how inexpensive it all is. The place is nothing fancy. Sort of a home-style Thai restaurant. But the taste of everything is outstanding. Mango and sticky rice are a must for dessert. Go once, and by the end of the meal, you'll be planning your next vay-cay to lovely downtown Gilbert. It seems like everyone has their own favorite place to grab Thai food in town, but if you seek fresh, flavorful Thai cuisine you absolutely have to try Nunthaporn's Thai Cuisine in Mesa. You might think all pad Thai is created equal, but once you try Nunthaporn's you'll know what the dish should be. Feel free to try something new like the ginger and black fungus based pad khing, though, because no matter what your order at this modest-looking restaurant you won't be disappointed. Whatever you order, you can enjoy it inside or on the patio as you watch shoppers peruse Mesa's historic downtown promenade off of Main Street.

  • Pink Pepper Asian Fusion

    1941 W. Guadalupe Rd. Mesa

    480-839-9009

Pretty in pink décor, with the sort of Thai cuisine that won't scare away novices, this Pink Panther of Thai-dom does produce some decent Thai toast, pad Thai, pot stickers, etc. It offers a full bar and is definitely not a hole in the wall. If you're a connoisseur of Thai eats, Pink Pepper's dishes may not burn a hole in your tongue the way you want. But then, some might consider that a good thing.

  • Sa Bai Modern Thai

4121 E. Thomas Rd. East Phoenix

    602-954-8774

What used to be a Wendy's fast-food restaurant has been converted successfully into a tasteful, tranquil Thai eatery, complete with a full bar. Service can be spotty, but the food delivers on almost all fronts, whether it's a handful of spicy curry dishes (especially the seafood green curry) or modern takes on old standbys such as pad Thai or fried rice. Sa Bai's signature sauces are bursting with flavor and really kick up a notch such delicious appetizers like crab wonton rolls and satay. Salads and soups may not pack the punch of the Valley's more traditional Thai joints, but there is more than plenty of entrées to love on SaBai's menu. Read our review.

  • Sala Thai Restaurant

    10880 N. 32nd St. Ste. 29 North Phoenix

    602-971-1293

Small, family-run Thai restaurant where the dishes are some of the freshest in the Valley. Chef Somsaun Pluemjit shops for produce every day before opening, and this comes through in her cooking, which is lighter than at most other Thai eateries and chock-full of cucumber, onion, tomato, and carrot. Those of you with a fetish for culinary heat will not be disappointed, unless you have a tongue made of cast iron. Sala Thai's medium is still spicy, but ask for it hot and you will get it hot, bucko. Non-spice freaks will be happy with items like pad Thai, Thai sausage, and "son-in-law egg," a fried hard-boiled egg sprinkled with fried garlic.

  • Sapporo

14344 N. Scottsdale Rd. North Scottsdale

    480-607-1114

A place to see and be seen, and suck down some topnotch sushi while doing so. This glitzy palace is packed with fine young professionals crowding a hip watering hole, but the chefs take their mission seriously. The concept is split into three themes: teppanyaki, Pacific Rim and sushi. With a special chef for each area, the results are outstanding all around. Anything with ahi is excellent, and dishes get creative, with plates like hoisin-glazed barbecue or misoyaki black cod with lobster cognac and kabayokie sauce. However, you can also always just pop in to get one of their refined, light, and fresh cocktails or enjoy a glass of wine or sake from their list.

  • Siamese Kitchen

    4352 W. Olive Ave. Glendale

    623-931-3229

Terrific Thai food in a funky ambiance you won't soon forget. Wood paneling circa 1970, black leather booths from the same era, and a wall-size photo of an autumnal forest with a stream and plank wooden mill make Siamese Kitchen look like some old mom-'n'-pop pancake house gone ethnic. After 9 on some nights, the whole restaurant shakes from the band playing at the country-western bar next door. But any inconvenience caused by this is more than counterbalanced by the outstanding Thai vittles prepared by Vanna Vorachitti, the most recent of five owners of this establishment. She makes killer Thai toast, and curries that'll melt the buttons on your shirt. A real find. Put this place into heavy rotation and keep it there. Well worth a 30-minute drive from another part of town.

  • Thai Basil

    114 W. Adams St. #104 Central Phoenix

    602-759-8736

The folks at Thai Basil dressed up a former sub shop with dark wood tables and chairs, muted gold walls, charming vintage portraits, and Thai woodcarvings to make the simple space welcoming to solo diners and small groups alike. The prices are alluring, too. Hardly anything?s over $10, and at lunch, all but two dishes are $6.95. Start off with smooth-as-satin coconut soup (tom kha), or delicate fried spring rolls stuffed with a savory mix of carrots, cabbage, and glass noodles. Papaya salad (som-tum) is full of exhilarating flavors, and is big enough to share or to eat as a main dish. Thai Basil?s curry plates, served with soft piles of jasmine rice, are delicious, as is the soy-and-herb-marinated barbecued pork. And the pad Thai here can be summed up in one word: classic.
