  • Aloha Kitchen

2950 S. Alma School Rd. Mesa

    480-897-2451

This fast-casual Mesa lunch spot checks a lot of "classic hidden gem" boxes: strip mall location, beachy walls and window murals, several decades in business, super flavorful fare. Aloha Kitchen is, in fact, such a classic hidden gem that it is no longer hidden. It's been on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives and has a line out the door almost daily. Fame hasn't gone to the heads of Aloha Kitchen's friendly owners, though. The reasonably priced Hawaiian-style eatery (they throw in a little Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, too) still serves generous, hard-to-resist island food via simple counter service. We've often raved about the fried saimin (island-style noodles in a shrimp soup base). But don't sleep on the mixed plates, particularly the teriyaki chicken — black-edged, charbroiled boneless chicken marinated in special island teriyaki sauce, served with steamed rice and your choice of macaroni-potato salad or a small side salad. Have mercy. New Normal: Seating is limited inside, but we hear the takeout counter is busy but speedy with to-go orders.

  • Hapa Food Co.

    5235 E. Southern Ave. Mesa

    480-654-8581

Considering the plate lunch’s popularity, you’d think the local Hawaiian scene wouldn’t be so overrun with chains. Standout independents in Phoenix are few, and Hapa Food Co. is a tremendous recent addition. Wildly popular, the menu at Hapa is short, and the lines are long. Load up your plate with popular favorites such as sweet, smoky kalbi that’s heavy with char, pitch-perfect ahi poke seasoned just right or fried chunks of chicken smothered in a sweet, garlicky sauce that’s the best kind of over-the-top. Stalking Hapa’s Instagram page for daily specials is a pro move. And be sure to save space for dessert. Plump malasadas, fried to order, are stuffed with thick vanilla custard or a sultry purple ube cream, and occasional specials such as long johns or coconut snow puffies make Hapa Food Company one of Phoenix’s standout purveyors of fried dough.

  • Kona Grill

7014 E. Camelback Rd. Central Scottsdale

    480-429-1100

Pot Stickers galore! That's what Kona has that we love the most. These tasty chicken and vegetable dumplings are crispy on the outside, spicy on the inside. Ditto the Sweet and Spicy Shrimp, tossed in chili sauce; and the Chicken Satay, grilled marinated chicken skewers served with creamy cabbage slaw. A full sushi bar and a long list of fresh pizzas sounds like a strange combination, but they're just two reasons to come back for more. (When you do, try the Margherita Pizza, with hand-tossed crust dotted with olive oil, garlic, parmesan, mozzarella, basil and balsamic vinegar.) Delicious!

  • Leo's Island BBQ

    7665 W. Bell Rd. Peoria

    623-878-1128

Located in the Arrowhead shopping district, this cheery, locally owned spot specializes in the Hawaiian plate lunch: a magical mass of two scoops of rice, mayonnaise-heavy macaroni salad, and mountains of meat piled into a plastic foam container. A menu of nearly 30 selections lists traditional Hawaiian plate lunches – Korean kalbi, Japanese katsu, Hawaiian kalua pork and loco moco (a hamburger patty, fried egg, and gravy) – as well as mixes and combos. And because the plates (all around eight bucks) are served up in portion sizes that, like the plate lunch’s history, seem most befitting following a hard day’s labor (or, sans surf, an afternoon of strip mall shopping), it’s a good idea to arrive at Leo’s on an empty stomach.

14344 N. Scottsdale Rd. North Scottsdale

A place to see and be seen, and suck down some topnotch sushi while doing so. This glitzy palace is packed with fine young professionals crowding a hip watering hole, but the chefs take their mission seriously. The concept is split into three themes: teppanyaki, Pacific Rim and sushi. With a special chef for each area, the results are outstanding all around. Anything with ahi is excellent, and dishes get creative, with plates like hoisin-glazed barbecue or misoyaki black cod with lobster cognac and kabayokie sauce. However, you can also always just pop in to get one of their refined, light, and fresh cocktails or enjoy a glass of wine or sake from their list.
