  • Duke's Sports Bar & Grill

7607 E. McDowell Rd. South Scottsdale

    480-675-9724

If you enjoy watching frolf, there’s not a bad seat on the sprawling patio at Duke's Sports Bar & Grill, which backs right up to the Vista del Camino Disc Golf Course along the Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt in south Scottsdale. And if you enjoy playing frolf, Duke’s is ideal for a pre- or post-game beer (or during — you could easily sneak over in the middle of your round). Inside, you’ll find pool tables, a variety of arcade and shuffleboard units, and a few dozen TVs — even in the bathrooms — all tuned to various sports packages. They’ve got import and domestic beers on tap, strong mixed drinks, and a menu replete with fried food (say hello to the mozzarella sticks for us) and burgers, sandwiches, and salads. Duke’s was started by a father-daughter team, Al and Jackie McCarthy, in 1998. More than two decades later, it's still in the family and going strong.

  • Teakwoods Tavern & Grill

    5965 W. Ray Rd. Chandler

    480-961-0945

It may be located in a quiet Chandler strip mall, but Teakwood's isn't your run-of-the-mill sports bar. The cozy, casual atmosphere with tons o' flat screens make it an ideal spot to watch the game. Sounds good, right? It's also a great place to make a mess. Buckets of peanuts grace each table, and they really seem to want you to throw the shells directly on the ground. Go ahead, someone else will clean it up, just like at the stadium. The extensive menu of bar food leans toward such Midwestern classics as cheese curds and meatloaf, which make hearty alternatives to their award-winning wings. Drink specials every night of the week and pitchers of ice cold beer make Teakwood's a local favorite.

Alter Ego, located on the ground floor of Canopy by Hilton Tempe Downtown, impresses. Veteran Valley chef Ken Arneson oversees the kitchen here, ensuring guests are treated to well-executed specialties like the skirt steak chimichurri, the katsu chicken sandwich, and sweet Thai shishito peppers. Don't even get us started on the goat cheese gelato, mixed with fresh berries and served with the In "The Pot" Cobbler.

  • Astor House: Coronado 'Cue & Southern Speakeasy

    2243 N. 12th St. Central Phoenix

    602-687-9775

Astor House has traded in shared plates for a pair of hickory-wood smokers that have turned out some delicious (and a couple of ho-hum) smoked meats. Brisket is moist and delicious, as is the pulled-pork shoulder, tender and flavorful and just pink enough. Baby back pork ribs are crusty with a crunchy dry rub coating pink, tender meat with a hint of smokiness. All meats are accompanied with spicy or sweet dipping sauces.

  • Atlas Bistro

    2515 N. Scottsdale Rd., #18 South Scottsdale

    480-990-2433

Atlas Bistro is located inside the Arizona Wine Company in Scottsdale, tucked away in a small room with white tablecloths. The bring-your-own-bottle, dinner-only restaurant has been around since 2001, with Chef Cory Oppold presenting ever-changing modern dishes that originate from his French-driven cooking style. Diners may experience a $65, three-course, prix-fixe meal powered by keywords like organic, hand-foraged, local, wild, line-caught, sustainable, and exotic. Courses from this locally owned eatery have included chilled chicken breast presse, Hudson Valley foie gras mousse, Niman Ranch pork belly, and seared wild Nordic halibut from Chula Seafood. Desserts and cheeses are also on the menu, which includes petite beignets, and a plate of soft, aged, blue cheese accompanied by accoutrements, nuts, and toasted Noble bread. But the best part may be the relaxing atmosphere this sliver of a restaurant offers its patrons. New Normal: Reservations are extremely limited and preferred via direct message through social media. The Atlas Wines shop is also open next door.

  • Beckett's Table

3717 E. Indian School Rd. East Phoenix

    602-954-1700

This Arcadia eatery has been open for more than a decade, a feat accomplished thanks to the efforts of double husband-and-wife team owners: sommeliers Katie and Scott Stephens and Justin and Michelle Beckett. There's something about Beckett's Table that raises the profile of the dining scene along Indian School Road in this specific part of Phoenix. Maybe it's the actual community table, which can't be missed upon entering the restaurant. The multi-seat high-top is best enjoyed during social hour, when a number of Beckett's signature dishes, such as the deviled egg of the day, are on special. Many menu items demonstrate the fact that Justin Beckett has been in the kitchen since he was 9 or 10 years old. Favorites include the signature fork-tender short ribs and the city-famous fig and pecan pie.

James Beard Award finalist Kevin Binkley opened this Phoenix bistro, his third Valley restaurant, in early 2013 in the former home of Sophie's Bistro. The culinary powerhouse re-imagines local produce in delicious small plates in a cozy neighborhood spot with wood floors, wainscoting, and white linen. One of the best new restaurants of 2013.

  • Bitter & Twisted Cocktail Parlour

1 W. Jefferson St. Central Phoenix

    602-340-1924

A self-described “cocktailian,” Ross Simon of Bitter & Twisted is known for his tome-like illustrated menus that offer studied riffs on legions of classics, resulting in libations that are proudly “whimsical as fuck.” Among those is the coldest old-school martini in town, which can be sipped in expansive booths upholstered in red leather under sky-high ceilings. Whether you're in downtown Phoenix for a show, or you make a special trip, be sure to stop in at Bitter & Twisted. Pro tip: Join the wait list online to secure an earlier spot in the queue.

Located on the second floor of the Hotel Palomar at CityScape in downtown Phoenix, this true, urban gathering place, like its contemporary American fare, successfully blends sophistication and familiarity along with a solid selection of signature cocktails. The restaurant's dishes, with a focus on local ingredients, are available as small plates or in two sizes — perfect for sharing or to mix-and-match. • Bourbon Steak

7575 E. Princess Dr. North Scottsdale

    480-585-2694

Let's face it: Upscale steakhouses can tend to be one trick ponies. However, with a chef like Chris Curtiss at the helm, North Scottsdale's Bourbon Steak is elevated to something unique, while still being familiar. Grilled octopus, raw fish crudo dishes, gnocchi with mussels in a white wine sauce, and whiskey-centric classic cocktails are a great place to start at this luxe, dark, and stunning restaurant inside the Fairmont Princess Resort. You also won't be disappointed with sides like crispy roasted Brussels sprouts with pancetta and black truffle mac and cheese. While you could certainly splurge for a $75 Maine lobster pot pie, you'll feel equally pampered getting a butter poached steak. In particular, the mesquite-grilled filet mignon is as tender and moist as it could possibly be inside, with the smokey, uniquely Southwestern mesquite flavor on the outside. The grill also serves up fish and Wagyu beef options. Read our review.

  • The Brickyard Downtown

    85 W. Boston St. Chandler

    480-963-1373

When visiting downtown Chandler, a stop at The Brickyard is a must. This cocktail bar and restaurant is located inside the former home of the Chandler Arizonan, a newspaper that dates back to 1912. But you’ll find more than just history here. Start with the cocktail menu, which is located inside the plastic DVD case dropped off at your table. The video game-themed booklet outlines your drink options by such creative categories as Arcade, Disc, Multiplayer and Next Gen. From the Console section, we love Save the Princess, a bright refresher with Ketel One peach and orange blossom vodka, Leblon cachaca, crème de pêche, orgeat, lemon and yuzu. While the cocktail menu shines, don’t forget about the food. The lamb chimichangas and pork belly skewers are winners.

  • Buffalo Wild Wings

    1475 W. Elliot Rd. Gilbert

    480-813-9464

Buffalo Wild Wings was founded in 1982 when a guy from Buffalo, New York traveled to Ohio to judge an amateur figure skating competition and failed to find any wings that measured up to the ones at home. Now B-Dubs, as it likes to call itself, has spread to nearly every state in the U.S. with more than 600 locations, including Phoenix, where it's easy to find on Voice Places. The yellow-and-black logo features a buffalo that has sprouted majestic wings, but make no mistake--it's strictly chicken here, available in regular or boneless varieties in 21 flavors from Garlic Parmesan and Caribbean Jerk to Asian Zing and the simply named but much feared Blazin'. Every location features a plethora of televisions for your sports-watching needs and a plentiful selection of beer on tap.

  • Cafe Monarch

    6934 E. 1st Ave. Central Scottsdale

    480-970-7682

After years as a romantic BYOB restaurant, Scottsdale's Café Monarch has been left in the hands of Christian Lewkowicz, a former employee and fan of the last owner and chef, Christopher Van Arsdale. Lewkowicz and his team look to carry on the restaurant's tradition of simple food done well and guests treated like family instead of customers. Though diners might be drawn by the candlelit courtyard, ivy-covered walls and bubbling fountains, they return each year to taste the daily-changing menu at Café Monarch, which features seasonal and local produce whenever possible.

  • Carly's Bistro

128 E. Roosevelt St. Central Phoenix

    602-262-2759

For 15 years, diners have been lining up to order salads and sandwiches at Carla Wade Logan’s café on Roosevelt Street. But the cocktails here are first-rate, too. The Prickly Pear Margarita is hot pink and ice-cold, a must-try for visitors to the desert or those just bar-hopping on a hot day. The Whiskey Sangria is sought after by many a happy hour patron. Don’t sleep on the classics, either: We’re big fans of the mojito and the bloody mary here. Carly’s was an early RoRo spot, and it’s still one of the best in the neighborhood.

  • Century Grand

3626 E. Indian School Rd. East Phoenix

    602-739-1388

For years, Jason Asher and Rich Furnari have defined the cutting edge of local cocktail culture, and Century Grand and the three bars housed inside are the culmination of their efforts. Highly stylized and themed, Century Grand is home to UnderTow, The Grey Hen, and Platform 18. All immersive experiences, the first makes customers feel as though they're sipping tropical cocktails in the belly of a ship. The Grey Hen is styled as a New Orleans apothecary, where the medicines look more like whiskey, and perhaps the most immersive of all, Platform 18 takes customers on a train ride complete with TV screen-windows showing the world passing by. Reservations are recommended as is taking a glance at the website before showing up to this busy bar, as there are specific rules for each concept.

  • Chelsea's Kitchen

    5040 N. 40th St. East Phoenix

    602-957-2555

This outpost of Craig and Kris DeMarco and Bob Lynn's ever-expanding culinary kingdom leaves behind the boutique ambiance and eats of Postino and La Grande Orange for something far more sophisticated and satisfying. Built like an airy, one-story Arizona ranch house, with a peaked roof, a big front porch, and a huge patio out back with a large brick fireplace, CK exudes comfort, warmth, and solidity. And the menu does the same, with an offering of burgers, steaks, tacos, green chile stew, fried chicken, and so on. May seem pedestrian at first glance, but the flavor to be had in each item is first-class, with four-star preparation. Return visits a must.

  • Original ChopShop Co.

    7158 E. 5th Ave. Central Scottsdale

    480-794-1536

The “chop” portion in the name of this fast-casual place of healthy eats in Old Town Scottsdale refers not so much to meats (although it has them), but to its handling of vegetables. Here, carrots, kale, cucumbers, and the like are pressed into juices, placed into bowls, and packed into sandwiches and wraps for a small menu of mostly average but hefty, all-natural offerings that don’t go over the ten-dollar mark.

Adero is a luxury hotel in Scottsdale and Cielo is the resort’s onsite restaurant. • Citizen Public House

    7111 E. 5th Ave. Ste. E. Central Scottsdale

    480-398-4208

Don't let the name and the address fool you. Citizen Public House, founded by former Cowboy Ciao culinary master chef Bernie Kantak, may sound pretentious, but its stylish yet relaxed atmosphere and offerings of classic American fare with a delicious kick are nothing short of modest classiness. From picture-perfect scallops and standout starters like the luscious crispy sesame pork belly to the Original Chopped Salad (so popular it has its own Facebook page) and dreamy desserts, at Citizen Public House, deliciousness is in every detail. Whether it's an evening out, a pairing dinner, happy hour fun, or late-night noshing — all with the added enjoyment of a team that's as comfortable to be around as your dining companions — Citizen Public House deserves to be in heavy rotation on your restaurant playlist, particularly if you find yourself in Scottsdale.
