  • Bootleggers

3375 E. Shea Blvd. North Phoenix

    602-996-4228

Like a barbecue pit gone the way of a gastropub, this easygoing yet smartly dressed spot in northeast Phoenix serves up its satisfying smoked meats as easily as it does its well-crafted cocktails. Tip back a well-crafted Old Fashioned or a glass of dangerously smooth house made apple pie moonshine, then choose from excellent offerings like beef brisket, a hunk of hickory-smoked steer with a dark peppery crust; a stellar sandwich of pork belly lit up with a spiced aioli on griddled sourdough; or, for starters, the Bacon Board, a kind of salty and smoky homage to one of the country’s longest-running food trends. • Chelsea's Kitchen

    5040 N. 40th St. East Phoenix

    602-957-2555

This outpost of Craig and Kris DeMarco and Bob Lynn's ever-expanding culinary kingdom leaves behind the boutique ambiance and eats of Postino and La Grande Orange for something far more sophisticated and satisfying. Built like an airy, one-story Arizona ranch house, with a peaked roof, a big front porch, and a huge patio out back with a large brick fireplace, CK exudes comfort, warmth, and solidity. And the menu does the same, with an offering of burgers, steaks, tacos, green chile stew, fried chicken, and so on. May seem pedestrian at first glance, but the flavor to be had in each item is first-class, with four-star preparation. Return visits a must.

  • Green New American Vegetarian

    2022 N. 7th St. Central Phoenix

    602-258-1870

If you still think vegan food means a bunch of rabbit food, clearly you haven't been to Green. With a full menu of burgers, pasta, rice bowls, egg rolls, and even chili fries, eating vegan never looked so naughty. The newer Phoenix location is right next door to the restaurant's all vegan sweets shop, Nami, in case your Big WAC didn't satiate your cruelty-free junk food cravings.

  • Green New American Vegetarian

    2240 N. Scottsdale Rd. #113 Tempe

    480-941-9003

Some items at Green have almost universal appeal: The flatbread pizzas are tasty, as are the butterless, eggless chocolate chip cookies. But the meatball sammy and "Green" burger will only please those who've forgotten what beef tastes like. Basically, this is fast-food vegan, and fills a niche that needs to be filled, to judge by the crowds. For meat-eaters, it's a place to take the vegan date, where you'll be able to eat something on the menu without gagging.

  • The House at Secret Garden

2501 E. Baseline Rd. South Phoenix

    602-243-8539

Pat Christofolo has teamed up with her chef son, Dustin, to open the kind of gem you'll want to keep in your back pocket for a cozy date night, dinner with out-of-town guests, or lunch with your mom. And gratefully, its contemporary American cuisine is accessible and casual enough to justify frequent visits. Entrees run the gamut from a bacon cheeseburger to braised short ribs, and local ingredients from such purveyors as Maya's Farm, The Meat Shop, and Black Mesa Ranch get top billing. Located inside a stately 1929 Spanish-style mansion on Baseline Road that's surrounded by trees and lush vegetation, it feels like an off-the-beaten-path destination but really isn't much of a hike from CenPho or Tempe. When the weather's nice, the back patio is the place to be.

  • Little Miss BBQ

4301 E. University Dr. East Phoenix

    602-437-1177

Little Miss BBQ is a popular barbecue restaurant — a very popular barbecue restaurant. It is the kind of joint where, while waiting in line, a piece of tape may get slapped over an item on the large displayed menu, exacerbating your order anxiety. But that's all part of the experience. If you're not on your feet, standing with strangers waiting patiently to order, your nose filled with the fumes of grilling meat, your stomach sucking up against your spine — well, you're not doing it right. Little Miss BBQ was started by a competitive barbecue team who were inspired by the barbecue joints of the Texas Hill Country. Sides range from the expected to the inventive — anything from creamy mac and cheese and coleslaw to jalapeño cheddar grits and a cold roasted vegetable salad — but the meat is straightforward and top-tier. When you finally get to the counter, you speak first with your meat man, ordering your chopped brisket or pulled pork or turkey breast or the like-butter beef short ribs (only on Fridays and Saturdays). Then it's on to sides and add-ons, such as slices of white bread. Spot the blue-and-yellow midcentury modern sign of the original restaurant off University Drive, and you know you'll soon be in barbecue heaven.

  • Proof

10600 E. Crescent Moon Dr. North Scottsdale

    480-513-5085

Proof, the comfort food restaurant at the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale, is the Warren Buffett version of an American diner. A high-ceilinged, expansive room done up in polished wood, decorative tile, and bare-bulb lighting with doors tall enough for a professional basketball player to pass through with ease. The breakfast, lunch, and dinner restaurant offers elevated home-style American classics like fried green tomatoes, shrimp and oyster po'boys, and chicken and waffles with bacon and bourbon syrup.

  • Tuck Shop

    2245 N. 12th St. Central Phoenix

    602-354-2980

Situated in the residential heart of the Coronado District, you won't readily stumble on low-key little Tuck Shop like you would some of the restaurants along Seventh Street, but this place is worth the detour. Owner DJ Fernandes, an architect, revamped the 1950s-era building into a relaxing hideaway that's one part sleek tapas bar and two parts cozy living room. Dig into shareable plates of Southern-influenced fare, like fried chicken, red beans and rice, and mac and cheese with prosciutto, and be sure to order a cocktail -- housemade tonic water, ginger ale, and lemonade go perfectly with top-shelf spirits.
