  • Asian Fusion Cafe

    725 S. Rural Road, #105 Tempe

    480-939-2555

It’s all in the name at Asian Fusion Café, a Hong Kong-style diner found in Tempe near Arizona State University. Asian Fusion Café is the first of its kind in Tempe, and is known as a "tea restaurant" or cha chan teng. That means it’s a blend of Cantonese, Western, and American dishes, even some Szechwan entrees, on a 100-item-long menu. This tea restaurant naturallty offers an impressive array of teas, including Hong Kong-style milk tea and jasmine green tea served hot or cold. Follow that with a beef pancake roll appetizer; French toast; a club sandwich; or Western-style rice dishes like orange chicken, noodle soup, curry flavor chow fun, or twice cooked pork. Desserts almost get their own page on the menu at Asian Fusion Café, and include walnut soup, double mountain grass jelly, and an array of flavors like mango and red bean for slushes and shaved ice.

A self-described “cocktailian,” Ross Simon of Bitter & Twisted is known for his tome-like illustrated menus that offer studied riffs on legions of classics, resulting in libations that are proudly “whimsical as fuck.” Among those is the coldest old-school martini in town, which can be sipped in expansive booths upholstered in red leather under sky-high ceilings. Whether you're in downtown Phoenix for a show, or you make a special trip, be sure to stop in at Bitter & Twisted. Pro tip: Join the wait list online to secure an earlier spot in the queue.

  • Extreme Sushi

    4434 W. Thomas Road, #15 West Phoenix

    602-269-5005

You’ll have to hunt a bit to find Extreme Sushi. The small, counter-service restaurant is tucked into the corner of a sprawling strip mall near 43rd Avenue and Thomas Road. But if you’re game to try new things, it’s worth the effort in order to sample unusual Mex-sushi rolls like the cocodrilo (the crocodile), a cream cheese and shrimp roll topped with scallops and fiery dribbles of Sriracha. If you love spice, you’ll probably also appreciate the Extreme Roll, the eponymous house roll made with shrimp and doused in a chipotle and eel sauce. Another notable house creation is the Black Jack, a roll made with cream cheese and crab, and topped with tempura-chopped crab and fried asparagus.

  • The Great Pho King Food Truck

    No address listed Central Phoenix

    480-331-8638

The Great Pho King food truck comes from Mike Baum (front of the "house") and chef Eddy Pham, who met just a year ago and realized they would need each other to enter -- and be successful in -- the street food biz. The menu includes two types of Vietnamese noodle soup, or pho, both of which come with rice noodles, meat, sliced onions, and cilantro. The Pho King also serves up other Asian fusion fare such as Vietnamese sandwiches (banh mi), fresh (and refreshing!) spring rolls (goi cuon) and crispy crepes (banh xeo). They also offer two grilled cheese dishe with Gruyere, cheddar, havarti, and Brie. Each of the items ranges from $4 to $8.50, with the most expensive option being the crispy crepes.

  • Halo-Halo Kitchen

3553 W. Dunlap Ave. North Phoenix

    602-324-9670

For fans of both Filipino food and karaoke, this family-owned restaurant on the city’s west side has them both. On one side there is the eatery, a bright-white room of Filipino baked goods and groceries leading to a turo-turo, or "point-point" setup of meats and prepared stews which doubles as a place to order your choice of nearly 15 all-day breakfast silogs as well as made-to-order traditional Filipino specialties like very good sizzling pork sisig, lechon kawali, and chicharron bulaklak. On the other, a darkened pub called the Kalesa, tricked out with televisions, a full bar, a dance floor, and a karaoke stage, stays open until 1 a.m. on Fridays (the kitchen is open late, too).

  • Pink Pepper Asian Fusion

    1941 W. Guadalupe Rd. Mesa

    480-839-9009

Pretty in pink décor, with the sort of Thai cuisine that won't scare away novices, this Pink Panther of Thai-dom does produce some decent Thai toast, pad Thai, pot stickers, etc. It offers a full bar and is definitely not a hole in the wall. If you're a connoisseur of Thai eats, Pink Pepper's dishes may not burn a hole in your tongue the way you want. But then, some might consider that a good thing.

  • Saffron Indian Bistro

4330 W. Union Hills Dr. Glendale

    623-581-7576

Saffron Indian Bistro is situated in a sleepy Glendale strip mall that looks like it’s seen better days, but you’ll probably forget about the less than glamourous environs the moment you step inside the restaurant’s modern, crisp-looking dining room. Of course, the main attraction here is the food, and that also happens to be quite good. The house ginger lemonade is a nice way to start your meal. Appetizers include very crispy, ultra-savory samosas, along with hard-to- find Indian street snack staples like pani puri, crispy potato-stuffed pastry puffs. Popular menu items like chicken tikka masala, lamb vindaloo and butter chicken tend to be skillfully made and delicious. The restaurant also has a small and intriguing menu of Indian-Chinese fusion dishes, including a chili paneer dish that works surprisingly well.

  • Senor Sushi

4324 W. Indian School Rd. West Phoenix

    623-849-9312

You may have to blink once or twice after walking into Señor Sushi for the first time. From the outside, the restaurant looks like any other strip mall joint, but inside, the sleek, dark dining room is replete with elevated, leather booths, and a red-on-black color scheme designed to evoke a Japanese lounge. The menu offers both traditional Japanese sushi, as well as “Latino” rolls, which includes specialties like the Milena Roll, a deep-fried roll stuffed with shrimp, chicken, and bacon, and topped with Chihuahua cheese. The restaurant and bar frequently hosts live music throughout the week.

  • SoChu House

2801 N. Central Ave. Central Phoenix

    602-340-9777

Chef/restaurateur Johnny Chu has given Central Phoenix several fine restaurants over the years, from Lucky Dragon to Fate to Sens. He's topped himself with the chic and flashy SoChu House, where Chu again wows with his Asian tapas-style dining in a very see-and-be-seen urbane environment. Make sure to try the ginger mint duck salad and Chu's hot-and-sour soup. On weekend nights, a DJ usually takes over the sound system and SoChu turns into an upscale drinking, dancing, and dining nightclub.

  • Sushi Loco

Sushi Loco, located in a space formerly occupied by one of the biggest Chinese food buffets on the west side, is a sleek restaurant and bar specializing in Mexican sushi and seafood. The expansive menu includes staples like ceviche and shrimp tostadas, along with specialty sushi rolls. The most popular rolls here are of the deep-fried variety, including the Cielo, Mar y Tierra, which comes with shrimp, beef, and chicken. The restaurant, which has a dance floor and stage, hosts karaoke nights through the week, and live music and dancing on the weekends.

  • Sushi Sonora

    1400 N. 32nd St. Central Phoenix

    602-267-1697

Sushi Sonora claims to be the first Mex-sushi restaurant in metro Phoenix, and it continues to be one of the most popular spots to indulge in cheesy, deep-fried rolls. Specialties here include the Dinamita (“dynamite”) roll, a tempura-battered and deep-fried roll stuffed with cooked shrimp, cream cheese, and avocado. But everything else will seem like health food in comparison to another house specialty, the Percheron roll (named after the much-loved, oversize draft horse). The roll, which looks like a burrito and comes wrapped in tinfoil, is stuffed with carne asada, pollo, bacon, avocado, the whole thing glued together with massive amounts of yellow cheese.

  • Sushinola Roll

    5930 W. McDowell Rd., #103 West Phoenix

    623-271-9920

Sushinola, a Mex-sushi concept in west Phoenix with both a food truck and brick-and-mortar location, is the place to go when you’re craving Sinaloan-style sushi, with an emphasis on Sinaloa. You’ll find many rolls inspired by classic Sinaloan seafood dishes, including a delicious, if messy, take on aguachile, which is popularly known as the West Coast take on ceviche. The spicy shrimp cocktail is ladled over your roll of crab sushi for a kind of soupy seafood feast. The kitchen always seems to be experimenting with new rolls, so this is the place to come for sushi rolls made with octopus, mango, or perhaps a roll smothered in deeply caramelized slices of bananas.
