  • Cold Stone Creamery

    14071 W. Bell Rd. Surprise

    623-584-1945

Phoenix diners who have never managed to master Starbucks' sizing system will find Cold Stone Creamery's similarly challenging; the ice-cream chain eschews small, medium, and large in favor of "Like It," "Love It," and "Gotta Have It" sizes. Once the portion is picked, patrons can concoct their own creations from super-premium ice cream flavors like vanilla, cake batter, chocolate, strawberry and coffee, plus a kaleidoscope of toppings: nuts, brownies, cookies, candy, and even chunks of pie crust. The Creamery's ice cream engineers will scoop your selections onto a frozen slab and deftly fold in the toppings, ensuring that you won't have to hunt very far with your spoon for another hunk of cookie dough. Voice Places has Cold Stone Creamery down cold.

  • Denny's

    5002 N. 7th St. Central Phoenix

    602-279-7721

The very first Denny's opened in Lakewood, California in 1954, and over the past six decades the company has constructed a global empire 1,600 locations strong. Breakfast classics like the Grand Slam and Moons Over My Hammy have stood the test of time, bringing loyal customers back to the always-open coffee shop-diner year after year, but the menu also includes lunch and dinner items from club sandwiches to spaghetti and meatballs. Denny's has managed to stay current after all these years with newfangled creations like the Hobbit movie tie-in menu, which offers Middle Earth-inspired items from Frodo's Pot Roast Skillet to The Ring Burger--indulgent dishes that will have late-night Phoenix diners claiming them as their precious. • How Do You Roll?

    1515 N. 7th Ave., 100 Central Phoenix

    602-254-1442

Phoenix's first location of this national chain features a truly novel concept: build-own-your sushi, a la Subway. This, in addition to a small selection of classic and signature rolls. Choose your own ingredients -- spicy tuna, eel, salmon, and other proteins, as well as numerous vegetables -- and brown or white rice, and toppings or sauces, all for about $8 a roll. As you might expect, it's not the best sushi you've ever had, but it's probably not the worst, either. For a quick sushi fix, you likely don't be disappointed. Just don't expect greatness.

  • McDonald's

9140 E. Indian Bend Rd. South Scottsdale

    480-443-0080

The world's largest fast food chain, McDonald's does business on an almost unimaginably massive scale: 1.7 million employees serve nearly 60 million customers daily at more than 34,000 locations in 119 countries, including plenty in Phoenix. Founded as a single drive-in in San Bernadino, California in 1940, the mega-corporation represented by the Golden Arches has become a worldwide icon of American efficiency. While the drive-thru's cornerstones remain burgers, French fries, and McNuggets, the menu is constantly evolving to suit a changing demographic; in recent years, Mickey D's has added healthier items like apple slices and an expanded salad menu, though the more indulgent offerings like the limited-run McRib seem to inspire the most loyalty. The chain's advertising is also taking aim at a younger, hipper demographic, with spots featuring young urbanites. The hard plastic tables and primary colors of yesteryear are now being replaced with cushy sofas and free-wifi to encourage people to linger after their McFlurries are history. • NachoBot

    910 N. 5th St. Central Phoenix

Nearly a next-door neighbor to Jobot Coffee Shop and with the same vibe, this simple but hip little house turned eatery off Roosevelt Row from Jobot owner John Sagasta features chips with gourmet toppings and, like Jobot, offers late-night hours — staying open until midnight on weekdays and until 4 a.m. on weekends. With a small menu featuring nacho interpretations of foods like the Sonoran hot dog and buffalo wings and all priced around seven bucks, you can afford to spring for tasty salsas of spicy red and roasted tomatillo. And with The Lost Leaf right next door, pairing your gourmet munchies with a craft beer makes snack time all the more satisfying.

  • Pub 'N' Grub

    2815 S. Alma School Rd. #101 Mesa

    480-838-1348

If you're hunting for this divers unmarked location within the decidedly button-down south Mesa plaza that houses it, steer clear of the law firms, real estate companies, and other white-collar business and instead look for the Christmas lights on the roof of the Pub 'n' Grub that seemingly operate 24/7/365. And yes, the bar is most definitely open for business, despite its perpetually closed window blinds. The non-stop sounds of revelry generated by its rogue's gallery of regulars manages to leak out, however, from the cheers of the victorious players cleaning up on the two pool tables and the thrum of classic rock hits on the juke, to noisy debates between patrons at the cigarette burn-scarred blonde wood bar about whether KISS or Ozzy got more trim in the ’70s. Such discussions often occur over Pub 'n' Grub's American bar food standards, most involving chicken, and imbibing any of its 14 different drafts. The overall vibe isn't so far from 1984, the year the joint opened.

  • Starbucks

9830 W. Lower Buckeye Central Phoenix

    623-687-2136

Since its founding by a trio of aspiring coffee roasters in Seattle in 1971, Starbucks has grown to become the largest coffeehouse in the world, with upwards of 20,000 locations in Phoenix and around the world. Named for the chief mate on the whaling ship from Moby Dick, the company didn't begin chasing the Great White Whale of world java domination until the 1990s, by which time it was opening a new store every day. A turbulent economy has since forced it to retrench, but the chain remains a powerhouse both commercially and politically, thanks to its op-ed-penning chairman, Howard Schultz. A purveyor of whole foods, Starbucks typically farms out its secret recipes to a single, Starbucks-owned bakery in each city, and now sells a good deal of its coffee beans at grocery stores. • Taco Migo

    1821 W. Baseline Rd. Tempe

    480-820-0574

In the shadow of Interstate 10 sits this spacious fast-casual taqueria opened in July 2011 originally with the intent of being open 24 hours a day. The concept failed to catch on with Tempe's late-night crowd, and within months, Taco Migo scaled back to more conventional hours of operation. Standards such as burritos and tacos, as well as specialty items such as steak sandwiches and Sonoran hot dogs, are better than average but not significantly tastier or less expensive than what can be found at countless taquerias in the area.
