  • Chompie's Deli Restaurant, Bagels, Bakery & Catering

    3481 W. Frye Rd. Chandler

    480-398-3008

Fresh off the plane from Gotham, just started your long-distance subscription to the New York Times, and in desperate need of a bialy with a schmear? Perhaps you're peckish for a knish or a toasted bagel with a side of chopped liver? Chompie's has got you covered, pallie, like the isle of Manny-hanny with concrete. What else do your East Coast taste buds desire? A little chicken soup with kreplach? Chilled borscht with sour cream? Latkes with applesauce? A corned beef sammy with a pickle? Chompie's proffers these delicacies as well as more prosaic eats like meat loaf, tuna salad, turkey breast and so on. No wonder serious fressers call Chompie's their home away from home.

    5002 N. 7th St. Central Phoenix

    602-279-7721

The very first Denny's opened in Lakewood, California in 1954, and over the past six decades the company has constructed a global empire 1,600 locations strong. Breakfast classics like the Grand Slam and Moons Over My Hammy have stood the test of time, bringing loyal customers back to the always-open coffee shop-diner year after year, but the menu also includes lunch and dinner items from club sandwiches to spaghetti and meatballs. Denny's has managed to stay current after all these years with newfangled creations like the Hobbit movie tie-in menu, which offers Middle Earth-inspired items from Frodo's Pot Roast Skillet to The Ring Burger--indulgent dishes that will have late-night Phoenix diners claiming them as their precious. • Diner 50

    1002 S. 19th Ave. South Phoenix

    602-262-9916

Diner 50 is a ‘50s-themed breakfast and lunch diner situated in a rough-looking strip of south-central Phoenix. But don’t be swayed by the somewhat shabby surroundings. Inside, the colorful diner, which is decorated with ‘50s-era antiques and dozens of vinyl records, is cooking up some very good, no-frills classic American comfort food. The food is a throwback. You’ll find old-school breakfast plates like rib eye steak served with eggs and potatoes. For lunch, there’s hot and cold sandwiches, and a menu of very good burgers. If you’re feeling particularly nostalgic, check out the small dinner menu, which features classic midcentury meals like liver and onions, pork chops, and a surprisingly dense, moist meatloaf.

  • The Duce

525 S. Central Ave. Central Phoenix

    602-866-3823

Don't judge a book by its cover. The understated exterior hardly does justice to everything that goes on inside, including swing dancing, boxing, and shopping. As far as the drinking goes, The Duce has an impressive selection of old school cocktails as well as few specialties you won't find anywhere else. The vintage trailer serves up some great comfort foods, including pot pies and sliders. The Duce offers ping-pong, shuffleboard, corn hole, and foosball, so it's practically like you can get a work out while you drink. After all, it is part-gym.

  • Fast Eddie's Diner

    17017 N. 33rd Ave. North Phoenix

    602-938-5688

Crinkly fries, a Cosmic burger, and a cherry phosphate: sounds like what Richie Cunningham and Ralph Malph are having at Al's in some Happy Days rerun on TV Land, right? But you can score the above eats at Fast Eddie's, the coolest '50s-style diner in town. With its red booths and long checkerboard counter, this spot is like some Back to the Future wrinkle in time. Here you can enjoy a strawberry malt while pretending Ike is still the prez, poodle skirts are still in fashion, and all's right with the world.

  • MacAlpine's Soda Fountain and Espresso Bar

    2303 N. 7th St. Central Phoenix

    602-262-5545

Forget about the pseudo-diners and nostalgia-themed restaurants that popped up during the '90s. This family-friendly place, established in 1928, is the real deal. Sit at the counter and swivel on your stool with an ice cream soda or old-fashioned lemonade. Enjoy burgers and sandwiches in one of the old wooden booths. The vintage jukebox -- two plays for a quarter -- features old 45s you haven't heard in years.

  • Mary Coyle Ol' Fashion Ice Cream Parlor

2302 N. Central Ave. Central Phoenix

    602-626-5996

We know all about Mary Coyle's ice cream treats, but we never used to think about this longtime Phoenix dessert palace as a great lunch place. We sure do now, thanks to the Sweet Virginia Ham Sandwich, a Coyle family recipe made with thin-sliced ham, sweet relish, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise. It's our favorite, next to Mary's Club Coyle, a triple-decker piled high with ham, turkey, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and Mary's homemade Thousand Island dressing. And did we mention the Chicken Ala Queen Mary? We meant to. Big scoops of diced chicken, bell peppers, and mushrooms, pureed into a tasty hot soup like you've never tasted. And for dessert? The best ice cream in town, of course.

  • Mel's Diner

1747 W. Grand Ave. Central Phoenix

    602-252-8283

Mel’s Diner, long a local staple, offers more than a link to the '70s TV show Alice, which was set there. The chicken fried steak and eggs breakfast brings big flavors and generous portions of meat, potato, and gravy. Hashed browns are transcendent: fluffy on the inside, crispy-brown on the outside, precisely as they should be prepared. Potatoes are clearly Mel’s forte. The side of country potatoes that come with the gyro omelet are mini masterpieces, their soft centers clad in crisp, buttery skins. The omelet itself folds eggs around snappy feta cheese and mildly spiced gyro meat. Even the accompanying bagel is super-fresh. Lunch is also good here: Burgers and gyros and chicken sandwiches; milkshakes, too.

  • Over Easy

4730 E. Indian School Rd. #123 East Phoenix

    602-468-3447

Leave it to chef Aaron May from Sol y Sombra, DC Ranch's celebrated wine-and-tapas place, to transform a drab former Taco Bell into a hip, vibrant nook that's part retro greasy spoon and part neighborhood hotspot. Along with breakfast staples like pancakes, omelets, and corned beef hash, the menu has some craveable items that set it apart, from The Over Easy (toasted brioche with spinach, bacon sauce, and egg), to razz-cherry scones with honey and crème fraiche. And if you're into chicken-fried steak, the scrumptious version here will keep you coming back for more. Read our review.

3937 E. Anne St. South Phoenix

    602-438-6602

It's our own little Whistle Stop Cafe, set in the heart of an industrial park/salvage district. Hard to find but worth the effort, this clean, quaint, country-style truck stop tempts with down-home chili, meat loaf, chicken-fried chicken, and amazing breakfasts (delicious biscuits and gravy, huge omelets, pancakes).
