  • Alebrije Neveria

    10171 N. 19th Ave., #7 North Phoenix

    602-577-0036

It’s easy to miss Alebrije Neveria, an unsuspecting strip mall spot on 19th Avenue north of Dunlap Avenue. The outside may be forgettable, but the inside is chic, with a blue-and-gold accent wall and long, inviting table for lingering and getting a great drink shot (these raspados are photogenic). Their menu goes beyond standard strawberry and tamarind to include chocolate, passion fruit, and horchata, a cinnamony sip topped with fresh-cut strawberries and walnuts. The elote bowls are also impressive so save room.

  • Big Boy's Pizza

    1731 W. Baseline Rd. Mesa

    480-838-2368

The name says it all at this Mesa strip-mall joint: The slices ($3) are huge, more like whole pizzas shaped like a slice and served with their own pizza cutter. Not gourmet 'za, by any means, but the crispy seasoned crust and signature sauce are sure to satisfy nonetheless.

If you've got a sweet tooth after dining at Craig DeMarco and Lauren Bailey's restaurant/bar Windsor in Central Phoenix, you'll want to stop by their adjoining sweet shop, Churn, afterward for some stellar homemade ice cream. Classic flavors like butter pecan and peanut butter mix with seasonal varieties, and they all taste great on a homemade cone – especially the pretzel variety.

  • Cold Stone Creamery

1949 E. Camelback Rd. East Phoenix

    602-248-9250

Phoenix diners who have never managed to master Starbucks' sizing system will find Cold Stone Creamery's similarly challenging; the ice-cream chain eschews small, medium, and large in favor of "Like It," "Love It," and "Gotta Have It" sizes. Once the portion is picked, patrons can concoct their own creations from super-premium ice cream flavors like vanilla, cake batter, chocolate, strawberry and coffee, plus a kaleidoscope of toppings: nuts, brownies, cookies, candy, and even chunks of pie crust. The Creamery's ice cream engineers will scoop your selections onto a frozen slab and deftly fold in the toppings, ensuring that you won't have to hunt very far with your spoon for another hunk of cookie dough. Voice Places has Cold Stone Creamery down cold.

  • Creamistry

4325 E. Indian School Rd., Suite 110 East Phoenix

    602-595-4698

We'll admit that the whole liquid nitrogen ice cream thing is probably a gimmick. If so, count us in on all the gimmicks, because Creamistry ice cream tastes fresh, sweet, and rich. There are many flavor options and mix-ins, and you can even get it dairy-free. This is something we can get used to, so we hope ice cream "created" with liquid nitrogen isn't just a fad that goes the way of fro-yo and (we're guessing) boba. We'd like to keep visiting Creamistry for a long time to come.

  • Fossil Creek Creamery

10379 W. Fossil Creek Rd., Pine Outside the Valley

    928-476-5178

Need a break from life in the big city? You’ve come to the right place: Fossil Creek Creamery. This working ranch is in quiet Strawberry, Arizona, located two short hours from Phoenix. The creamery makes and sells artisanal goat’s milk cheeses and fudge, but the ranch is also home to a pack of llamas. Plan a half-dike hike through the wooded mountains with llamas in tow to carry your packs and equipment. A healthy lunch is provided during the trek. Visitors can also opt to stay overnight in the ranch’s yurt; just remember to bring a sleeping bag. While you’re at Fossil Creek, pick up a stash of tasty products to savor at home or give as gifts. The ranch store stocks goat milk fudge in flavors like chocolate and peanut butter, ten types of chevre including lavender pepper and strawberry jalapeno, and goat milk soaps and creams made with coconut, jojoba, and sweet almond oil for those who aren’t a fan of the unique dairy taste.

  • Fruitlicious

3424 W. Southern Ave. South Phoenix

    602-442-5584

Elote (simply put, corn) has gained favor in respected restaurants, making its way onto menus for about $5. So, sure, you could say it's trendy. But head down to South Phoenix and there lies the mecca of Mexican street foods, with prices equivalent to the streets. Instead of serving corn on the cob, Fruitlicious slices off the corn from the cob and puts it in a cup with a dollop of mayo, lime juice, cotija, and chili powder. It's a mess-free way to indulge in the hot and creamy goodness of an all-time favorite without having to fork out unnecessary money that very well could be spent on the other enticing snacks Fruitlicious creates.

  • Kamana' Wana Hawaiian Treats

    13825 N. 19th Ave. North Phoenix

    602-819-3050

If you close your eyes while eating Hawaiian shave ice, you can almost hear the waves crashing on the North Shore...not really. But you can get a taste of the tropical oasis at Kamana' Wana Hawaiian Treats. Kevin, the owner, runs his shop solo, taking the time to create each shave ice for his customers, many of whom he knows by name. We love the horchata flavor with its subtle hint of cinnamon. Not only can customers add ice cream and cream to their shave ice, but mochi bits can be added for only 50 cents. Other Hawaiian treats are on the menu, such as pitaya bowls made with dragon fruit, oats, bananas and blueberries. Shaka, brah.

  • Marble Slab Creamery

2045 E. Camelback Rd. East Phoenix

    602-957-8576

Founded in Houston in 1983, Marble Slab Creamery has expanded to more than 400 outlets in locations as far-flung as Trinidad & Tobago and Scotland--apparently because ice cream is an international language. Marble Slab was the first chain to utilize frozen granite slabs to mix ice cream with toppings. Phoenix ice cream enthusiasts can orchestrate an original concoction by choosing from an assortment of super-premium flavors, from the mundane (French vanilla, strawberry) to the inventive (red velvet cake, peanut butter banana), then select from a kaleidoscopic variety of mix-ins like berries, sprinkles, chocolate-covered pretzels and Pop Rocks. Scoop technicians blend the ingredients with metal spatulas and pack them into freshly baked waffle cones. Locate your nearest Marble Slab Creamery on Voice Places.

  • Mary Coyle Ol' Fashion Ice Cream Parlor

2302 N. Central Ave. Central Phoenix

    602-626-5996

We know all about Mary Coyle's ice cream treats, but we never used to think about this longtime Phoenix dessert palace as a great lunch place. We sure do now, thanks to the Sweet Virginia Ham Sandwich, a Coyle family recipe made with thin-sliced ham, sweet relish, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise. It's our favorite, next to Mary's Club Coyle, a triple-decker piled high with ham, turkey, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and Mary's homemade Thousand Island dressing. And did we mention the Chicken Ala Queen Mary? We meant to. Big scoops of diced chicken, bell peppers, and mushrooms, pureed into a tasty hot soup like you've never tasted. And for dessert? The best ice cream in town, of course.

Thanks to Jobot owner John Sagasta, First Friday fans and Roosevelt Row, denizens can pop into his new late-night ice cream shop for a frozen treat courtesy of Gilbert's Udder Delights (Superstition Farms) ice cream. Score a scoop of one of twenty classic and unique rotating flavors (hint: try the cinnamon) served up in a homemade waffle cone ($4.50) or in a Chinese take-out box topped with a fortune cookie. Cool.
