  • Al's Chicago Style Hotdogs

    53 N. Val Vista Gilbert

    480-545-3267

When you have a state-fair-sized craving for food on a stick, the best place to satisfy your hunger is Al’s Chicago Style Hotdogs. Not only do they serve one of the tastiest versions of the all-American corn dog, covered in crispy and delicious batter that melts in your mouth, but they also make a mean Chicago-style dog. Al grew up in Roger’s Park and learned the restaurant business by working with Ira Helfer, the Hot Dog King of Chicago, so when he moved to Gilbert in 2002, he brought his authentic Chicago hot dogs with him. Al’s uses the best ingredients like Vienna hot dogs and Italian beef, Gonella rolls, and freshly prepared green relish. And, just in case you aren’t in the mood for the signature dog – topped with mustard, relish, pickles, tomato, cucumber, sport peppers, and celery salt – there are also hamburgers, sliders, Italian beef and sausage sandwiches, chicken sandwiches, and lots of fried sides like chili cheese fries, mushrooms, and onion rings.

  • Dazzo's Dog House

    6143 W. Glendale Ave. Glendale

    623-934-3536

We don't know what a Dazzo is, but we do know good, meaty hotdogs, and this place has them. We order ours with everything: mustard, onions, relish, and sport peppers-and always want more, even when we're full. Also available: yummy Fire Dogs, spicy hot and juicy as heck, and an Italian beef dog which, eaten with an order of Dazzo's yummy chili, is our idea of the perfect lunch. Especially when we follow it with one of this tiny diner's delicious shaved Italian ices. We go for the lemon ice-not too tart or too sweet, and dotted with real lemon zest-but we hear the strawberry ice is every bit as good. Guess we'll have to go back to Dazzo's to see for ourselves.

  • DK Dogs

    4700 N. 12th St., #112 Central Phoenix

    602-831-4878

DK Dogs in Phoenix specializes in Euro-style hot dogs, with distinctly Danish roots. If you have not experienced the pleasures of a Danish dog, prepare yourself for the house dog, which features an all-beef frank squeezed into a gently toasted, hollowed-out baguette, garnished with a mustard-like secret sauce. Along with classic Danish street dogs, DK Dogs offers specialty dogs like The Nordic, a well-balanced dog topped with havarti cheese, red pickled cabbage, and a sprinkling of fried onions. For formidable appetites, there's The Pastrami Dog, a hot dog buried under a small mound of chopped pastrami and sauerkraut, and sluiced with Thousand Island dressing. The sheer novelty of the menu is enough to merit a visit to DK Dogs. But it's the unabashedly flavorful quality of these fully loaded dogs that make DK Dogs a winner in our books.

  • El Caprichoso Hot Dogs

    2826 N. 35th Ave West Phoenix

    602-561-3723

The closest thing Phoenix and/or Arizona has to a signature dish — aside from the much-battled-over chimichanga — is the Sonoran hot dog. When we're called upon to make a case for the importance of this cherished street food, we look to the El Caprichoso Sonoran hot dog cart. Around for more than 20 years, El Caprichoso operates outdoors from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., a hot grill under a parking lot tent. Its grilled, bacon-wrapped hot dog is crammed, almost forced, onto a fluffy, split-top roll that's kissed all over with char. If you're the type who likes a heavy Sonoran dog, order yours with all the fixings: beans, grilled onions, fresh diced tomatoes, guacamole, salsa, cotija cheese, ketchup, mustard, and thick squiggles of mayonnaise. If you weren't an Arizonan before, you are now. New Normal: El Caprichoso now has a drive-thru. Takeout is also available; it can be preordered at 602-561-3723.

Just west of 39th Avenue and Indian School Road, you'll find the El Sabroso food truck. With it's large circus-tent-like red and yellow awning it's easy to spot from the road and more reliably open than its neighbor, El Exquisito hot dog stand. We love to pair El Sabroso's Sonoran hot dogs with a cold, refreshing Mexican Coke or Fanta on hot summer nights.

  • Luke's of Chicago

1602 E. Indian School Rd. Central Phoenix

    602-264-4022

Homesick for Chicago, or know someone who is? Take your taste buds on a trip back at Luke’s of Chicago, an Arizona restaurant that originated in the Windy City. The recipes and preparation techniques for the signature Italian beef – thinly sliced, tender, full of flavor, and totally irresistible – were handed down by family members to Cary and Diana Lee Del Principe, who own and operate the locally based restaurant. In addition to authentic Italian beef and sausage sandwiches, Luke’s offers meatball subs with provolone cheese, sweet pepper and egg sandwiches, chili cheese dogs, hamburgers, grilled chicken sandwiches, and chicken tenders. If you want a hot dog, don’t you dare order it with just mustard and ketchup. Try the true Chicago-style “The Works,” a Vienna all-beef hot dog topped with ketchup, mustard, onions, tomatoes, hot peppers, pickles, green peppers, and celery salt. With locations in CenPho, Chandler, and Scottsdale, Luke’s of Chicago ensures that you’re never far from that real Chi-town flavor.

  • Micky's Hot Dogs

    108 W. Broadway Rd. Mesa

    480-668-7777

Micky's Hot Dogs is well-known by Sonoran dog connoisseurs for its consistency in hours, location, and quality. Though we think their dog could use a bit more bacon (we had to check to make sure it actually had some after our first bite), we love to drop in anytime we're near downtown Mesa for a quick bite to eat.

  • Nogales Hot Dogs

1945 E. Indian School Rd. Central Phoenix

    602-527-0208

In a poll conducted to determine what Arizona’s state food should be, we pit the Sonoran hot dog against the prickly pear cactus fruit, and hot dogs won by a pretty wide margin. One of the best versions can be found at a stand on the southwest corner of 20th Street and Indian School Road in CenPho. Named for one of the biggest cities in the Mexican state of Sonora, Nogales Hot Dogs makes a Sonoran-style dog that will make you question your favorite topping choices of simple mustard and relish. Mesquite-smoked and bacon-wrapped, the hot dog is tucked into a fresh bun, smothered in beans, and loaded with toppings like mayonnaise, chopped tomatoes, guacamole, salsa, and cheese. This is a great secret spot for a late-night fourth meal too. Owner Pablo Perez, who has been in the Sonoran hot dog biz for over ten years, will make the perfect hot dog for you late into the evening.

  • Portillo's

    17125 N. 79th Ave. Glendale

    480-672-0100

We've started gushing about Portillo's almost as soon as it opened, but what's a little more going to hurt? The Chicago-area staple is a master of hot dog arts, but what some people don't know is the glory of Portillo's cheese fries ($2.29 for a small and $2.59 for a large). Since the creamy, hot cheese sauce comes on the side of the crinkle-cut and crispy fries, you don't end up with a soggy mess a minute into eating them. Instead you get a perfect cheesy, potato-y bite every time.

  • Short Leash Sit...Stay

110 E. Roosevelt St. Central Phoenix

    602-795-2193

This hot dog house of style on Roosevelt Row is Brad and Kat Moore's (Short Leash food truck) urban shrine to sausages, a collection of frankfurters steamed, baked, and fried, decorated with things like roasted red peppers, mango chutney, and Cracker Jack, and, most of the time, wrapped in a warm naan bun. Prepare for your journey through wiener-dom with fried pickle chips and a chilly craft brew. And when you're finished, pick up a piece of pie at The Pie Hole, the tiny bakery next door, for the journey home. Read our review.

  • Short Leash Hotdogs + Rollover Doughnuts

4221 N. Seventh Ave. Central Phoenix

    602-795-2193

What's in a hot dog? Most of us have no idea, but at Short Leash, dogs are all-natural beef, bratwurst, chicken, veggie, apple Gouda, or spicy link. Originally (and still) a food truck, later located along Roosevelt Row, and now situated in a sunny, Seventh Avenue suite in the Melrose District, Short Leash is, yes, all about those dogs. We're partial to the Lady, an absolute killer loaded with chipotle cream cheese, sauteed onions, and fried pickles, and wrapped in the shop's signature naan. The Bear — peanut butter, smoked Gouda, bacon, barbecue sauce, and Cracker Jacks — is also great fun. The 80-plus craft beers and scratch-made brioche doughnuts nicely round out the offerings here. Patio seating is also available.
