  • Amy's Baking Company

    480-607-0677

Perhaps the Valley's most notorious restaurant, featured on British celebrity chef's reality show Kitchen Nightmares, Amy's is far better known for its irascible owners than it is the food coming out of the kitchen. That being said, the pastries in the case look spectacular.

  • Big Boy's Pizza

    1731 W. Baseline Rd. Mesa

    480-838-2368

The name says it all at this Mesa strip-mall joint: The slices ($3) are huge, more like whole pizzas shaped like a slice and served with their own pizza cutter. Not gourmet 'za, by any means, but the crispy seasoned crust and signature sauce are sure to satisfy nonetheless.

  • Bongiorno Bagels

    3107 S. Gilbert Road, #101 Gilbert

    480-588-8222

Who do you want making your bagels? At Bongiorno, you get a Culinary Institute of America grad and a former FDNY lieutenant and firehouse chef, both New York natives adhering to New York style. It's as good a bagel pedigree as you'll find in Arizona. Using a system that emulates the enigmatic H20 of the Big Apple, John Bongiorno and Ed Cancro kettle-boil bagels and then finish them in an old-school deck oven. All the right touches are there: chew, a whisper of fluff, seeds not only on the tops of sesame and everything, but on their undersides. As in New York, these bagels, when freshly made, are good enough that they should never see the inside of a toaster.

  • Captain Bills Submarine

    10645 N. 35th Ave. A North Phoenix

    602-993-5290

A mash-up of a sub shop and a pop culture museum, this fun little neighborhood eatery has been a favorite with Phoenix locals for more than 30 years. From advertising icons to oversize household items to hundreds of nearly-naughty bumper stickers and customer photos covering every square inch of space, the décor accompanies a menu of standard hot and cold subs and salads priced on the cheap. Good bets at Captain Bill's Submarine are the Famous Italian stuffed with ham, genoa, salami, bologna, and provolone, and the New York Beef and Cheese with grilled onions, mushrooms, and bell peppers. Captain Bills may have been "putting the meat between the buns since 1981," but it's the kitsch that makes us crave it.

5042 N. Central Ave. Central Phoenix

    602-266-3636

If you haven't been to this cute little neighborhood eatery on Camelback and Central, there's a good chance your parents or your grandparents have -- the delicatessen's been a Valley staple since 1949, and in 2011, owner Stan Zawatski sold its one millionth sandwich. Belly up to the meat and cheese counter and select from dozens of signature sandwiches like the turkey-laden Doughboy, the New Yorker with corned beef, a spicy Sicilian sub, or make one of your own creations. Then, sit down at one of the three covered picnic tables and chat with the regulars or peruse the small selection of hard-to-find grocery items until your order's up.

  • Defalco's Italian Deli and Grocery

2334 N. Scottsdale Rd. South Scottsdale

    480-990-8660

This family-owned Italian culinary hub located on Scottsdale Road is best known for its deli and grocery, but also contains a casual sit-down dining area, DeFalco's Italian Eatery. This neighborhood joint makes its pasta sauces in-house and serves them with gnocchi, five kinds of pasta, lasagna, four-cheese stuffed shells, chicken parmigiana, and cheese and meat ravioli. In true Italian-American style, DeFalco's also has simple pizzas and calzones, both available in two sizes. Try any combination with the Italian sausage, which is made fresh in the restaurant. There's not a single bad thing on the menu, but when in doubt, ask the employees which sandwich or dish turned out to be especially delectable that day -- maybe the meatballs are extra tender, or the cheesesteak is perfectly juicy. DeFalco's also has some great desserts, including a crispy, flaky cannoli with ricotta filling, diced cherries, chocolate chunks, and a dash of cinnamon.

  • Duck and Decanter

1651 E. Camelback Rd. East Phoenix

    602-274-5429

Going to Duck and Decanter for a lunchtime sandwich, or a Nooner as they call it here, is like visiting an Icelandic cafe. The A-frame, faux chalet structure is not just a sandwich joint, but also a small grocery, wine bar, cheese shop, and of course, deli. To take your sandwich to go is to deprive yourself of a major part of the experience here. Why not browse the gourmet coffee selection and pick up a canister of Café Du Monde coffee and chicory? Or take a stroll through the place, pondering whether you want to dine at one of the cozy downstairs tables, the spacious upstairs dining space, or the twinkle-lit, dog-friendly patio? Or do you just order your giant sandwich right off, deciding between the Reuben, the Genoa, or classic roasted turkey? The Duck originated in 1972, growing to three locations then sizing back down to this one, but this impressive spread not far from the original location at 16th Street and Camelback Road is a forever gem in Phoenix's dining scene. D&D also has a message for "Beloved Restaurant Guests" on its website: "Take out? YES! Curbside? YES! Delivery? YES! We've been doing just that for nearly 50 years, and we're really good at it."
