  • 32 SHEA

    10626 N. 32nd St. North Phoenix

    602-867-7432

A standalone building in the parking lot of a strip mall on 32nd Street and Shea, the intersection from which the eatery gets its name, this cozy little breakfast, lunch, and dinner spot is the kind of restaurant where you could easily spend hours. There is a drive-thru, a patio (larger than the restaurant), and inside, a small bar, a handful of dark wood tables, and an eclectic mix of music overhead. In addition to killer coffee and cocktails, there’s a small menu of easy and affordable dishes, including a satisfying sandwich called the OMG, featuring prosciutto, mascarpone, and figs, and a light yet wonderfully creamy artichoke and spinach dip. And if you like the hazelnut spread Nutella (and who doesn’t?) owner Rebecca Golden will add it to just about anything.

  • Altitude Coffee Lab

8320 N. Hayden Rd. North Scottsdale

    480-878-5611

Altitude Coffee Lab has become known for its roasts, but this cafe is more than that. The low-key interior is homey and relaxed, the perfect spot to spend an afternoon getting work done on the ivy-covered patio. Should you get hungry, Altitude offers full breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus that include dishes from all over Europe like Spanish frittata, Danish smørrebrod, and more. For aspiring musicians and poets, weekly open mic nights on the high-end shop sound system will present your work well. Should you need liquid courage before you perform, the coffee house also offers beer, wine, and a small selection of spirits. • Bruno Mali's Cafe & Gift

    609 W. Osborn Central Phoenix

    602-287-9600

Although the name may lead you to believe this is some sort of early morning coffeehouse hangout or little gift shop filled with trinkets where patrons sip tea, don’t be deceived. What lies behind the door is a bar known for its cheap drinks and hip hop scene. Bruno Mali’s Café & Gift is best known for its weekly Monday DJ night, A Foreign Affair, which kicks off at 10 p.m. The vibe is easy and casual, and the music is often mixed in early ’90s hip hop style. The place promises to be a dark, slightly swanky bar that’s probably packed with weeknight warriors and attractive twenty-somethings getting down and dirty. This Central Phoenix hole-in-the-wall is also known as a haven for artists, and the walls are decked out from floor to ceiling with paintings by locals. Among the throng of dancing bodies, there’s regularly an artist on hand to paint or draw live as part of the entertainment.

  • Carmel's Coffee & Bakery

    4233 E. Camelback East Phoenix

    480-626-0020

This Central Phoenix coffee house – located in a vintage 1940s house on Camelback Road in Arcadia – is a favorite for its warm, cozy interior, interesting artwork, and freshly brewed java (using Lux beans). But what has us returning again and again is the full menu of breakfast and lunch items. Carmel’s Coffee and Bakery does of course have classic baked goods like scones, muffins, and croissants, but it also serves omelets, open-faced tartines, breakfast burritos, classic breakfast plates with eggs and toast, sweet and savory crepes, French toast croissants with real maple syrup, and croissant sandwiches with bacon and egg. Breakfast is served all day, but lunch items like BBQ pulled pork sandwiches, mac and cheese muffins, grilled cheese, and quiche are added later in the day. When the weather permits, Carmel’s has plenty of patio space available to sit and savor your morning coffee or to recharge while enjoying a midday meal.

  • Cartel Coffee Lab

    1 N. 1st St. Central Phoenix

    480-432-8237

If you live in Phoenix and haven’t heard of Cartel Coffee Lab, you’ve probably been living under a Starbucks-shaped rock. Or maybe you just don’t drink java. This local coffee roaster is the best known in the café scene, and chances are you’ve sipped their coffee somewhere around town without realizing it, like Jobot Coffee Shop, which brews its own custom roast. But true fans go straight to the source – one of Cartel Coffee Lab’s four locations in Tempe, Scottsdale, Downtown Phoenix, and Tucson – to get their fix of Black Market Espresso. Cartel sources its four-bean blend from a single high-elevation farm in the Sul de Mina region of Brazil, where it goes through a natural pulping process on-site before leaving for its final destination, your cup. Once Cartel gets its hands on the green beans, they’re roasted to create a bold-flavored coffee with citrus and chocolate notes and a dash of sweetness.

  • Cave Creek Coffee Co.

6033 E. Cave Creek Rd. Cave Creek

    480-488-0603

There's little we love more than an afternoon hike through the Jewell of the Creek Preserve, then a quick jump over to the Cave Creek Coffee Company for wine tasting, good food and a little live music. After a post-hike cabernet, we go for the Vegetarian Sandwich, piled with roasted Portobello mushroom, fresh mozzarella, tomato slices, fresh spinach, and pesto on toasted garlic bread. Also nice is the aptly-named Big Ass Burrito (also available as the Half Ass Burrito if you're feeling like a smaller portion), full of fresh lettuce and cheeses, beans and meat of your choice. Try the Smoked Salmon Sandwich, flaky fish smothered in a tangy sauce and folded neatly into fresh-baked bread. Visit the roomy, wood-paneled wine bar and sample more than two dozen different brands by the glass while munching on gourmet eats or check your e-mail on your laptop using the free wi-fi network. On certain nights, you can also take in a concert in the backyard, open-air performance space, where various acoustic and Americana musicians strum and sing. Then again, if you're on the run, just grab a cup of fresh-roasted java to go from the coffee bar.
