  • Altitude Coffee Lab

8320 N. Hayden Rd. North Scottsdale

    480-878-5611

Altitude Coffee Lab has become known for its roasts, but this cafe is more than that. The low-key interior is homey and relaxed, the perfect spot to spend an afternoon getting work done on the ivy-covered patio. Should you get hungry, Altitude offers full breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus that include dishes from all over Europe like Spanish frittata, Danish smørrebrod, and more. For aspiring musicians and poets, weekly open mic nights on the high-end shop sound system will present your work well. Should you need liquid courage before you perform, the coffee house also offers beer, wine, and a small selection of spirits. However, you shouldn't leave without trying the Gibraltar, which mixes espresso and foamed milk at temperatures lower than a cappuccino's so you can taste the amaretto and raisin notes of Altitude's espresso blend.

  • Bertha's Cafe

3134 E. Indian School Rd. East Phoenix

    602-955-1022

Whether this cute breakfast and lunch café in Phoenix is a dessert shop with an affordable savory side or a casual eatery with a sweet twist is more a question of semantics than of taste. Courtesy of Beth Goldwater (who is married to the grandson of the late five-term Arizona senator and 1964 presidential nominee), Bertha's serves up a tidy, affordable selection of simple and straightforward sandwiches and salads made with fresh ingredients and house made sauces. And thanks to a dessert case packed with homespun indulgences like thick chocolate brownies, decadent peanut butter cookies, and Goldwater's signature cheesecakes (some of the best in the Valley), a sweet ending -- or beginning -- to your meal is just a finger point away. • Blue Nile Cafe

    933 E. University Dr., #112 Tempe

    480-377-1113

Forget impressions from heart-rending TV pleas about Ethiopia -- Tempe's Blue Nile shows that food is one of the finest things about the African nation. Vegetables and legumes abound, made luscious with slow simmering into spicy stews. Chicken, beef and shrimp shine, too, wrapped burrito-like in tangy, homemade injera bread.

  • Carmel's Coffee & Bakery

    4233 E. Camelback East Phoenix

    480-626-0020

This Central Phoenix coffee house – located in a vintage 1940s house on Camelback Road in Arcadia – is a favorite for its warm, cozy interior, interesting artwork, and freshly brewed java (using Lux beans). But what has us returning again and again is the full menu of breakfast and lunch items. Carmel’s Coffee and Bakery does of course have classic baked goods like scones, muffins, and croissants, but it also serves omelets, open-faced tartines, breakfast burritos, classic breakfast plates with eggs and toast, sweet and savory crepes, French toast croissants with real maple syrup, and croissant sandwiches with bacon and egg. Breakfast is served all day, but lunch items like BBQ pulled pork sandwiches, mac and cheese muffins, grilled cheese, and quiche are added later in the day. When the weather permits, Carmel’s has plenty of patio space available to sit and savor your morning coffee or to recharge while enjoying a midday meal.

  • Cartel Coffee Lab

    7124 E. 5th Ave. Central Scottsdale

    480-432-8237

If you live in Phoenix and haven’t heard of Cartel Coffee Lab, you’ve probably been living under a Starbucks-shaped rock. Or maybe you just don’t drink java. This local coffee roaster is the best known in the café scene, and chances are you’ve sipped their coffee somewhere around town without realizing it, like Jobot Coffee Shop, which brews its own custom roast. But true fans go straight to the source – one of Cartel Coffee Lab’s four locations in Tempe, Scottsdale, Downtown Phoenix, and Tucson – to get their fix of Black Market Espresso. Cartel sources its four-bean blend from a single high-elevation farm in the Sul de Mina region of Brazil, where it goes through a natural pulping process on-site before leaving for its final destination, your cup. Once Cartel gets its hands on the green beans, they’re roasted to create a bold-flavored coffee with citrus and chocolate notes and a dash of sweetness.

  • Coffee Rush

    1949 W. Ray Rd. Ste. 40 Chandler

    480-855-9815

The staff at Chandler's Coffee Rush is relaxed and friendly, so much so that despite the name it's hard to feel rushed when you stop in. If you're a regular, the staff will even start your favorite chai or Caramel Nut Latte before you even get to the register. The pretty man-made lake out back makes the this a great place to chill out with a Mocha Frost and work on your laptop or catch up with friends. Coffee Rush's menu is basic; they simply have quality coffee available in a few dozen regular and sugar-free flavors, offered hot, iced, or frozen. If you're craving a nosh to go with your java, don't miss out on the Greek owners' specialty — gooey, sweet baklava with walnuts or pistachios.

  • The Coffee Shop

    3000 E. Ray Rd. Gilbert

    480-279-3144

This upscale coffee joint is housed inside a re-purposed maintenance garage. It sounds a little random but its really not considering that The Coffee Shop sits on the grounds of Agritopia, the urban farm oasis in Gilbert. Inside the coffee house you'll find a spacious place with great natural lighting. Order up one of their many specialty coffee drinks – might we suggest the Black and White, which comes with espresso, milk, white and milk chocolate and whipped cream – and enjoy the indoor seating or the outdoor patio. If you make a trip out to this spot it's worth the extra calories to pick up one of their famous cupcakes, made from scratch and always as pretty to look at as they are eat. They also have a breakfast menu, fresh pastries and plenty of sandwich options to please even the most picky pallets.

  • Cupz N' Crepes

    4232 E. Chandler Blvd. #8 Ahwatukee

    480-706-1963

There's nothing quite so perfect as the combination of fresh coffee and a perfectly-prepared crepe. And lucky for us, when we're looking to satisfy the craving we need not look any farther than Cupz N' Crepes in Ahwatukee. The south Phoenix eatery specializes in made-to-order crepes of both the sweet and savory variety filled with fresh meats, veggies and fruits. We particularly enjoy the The Nat, a unique buffalo-style crepe with chicken, hot sauce and blue cheese crumbles. For those looking for more traditional fare they have a selection of Nutella crepes as well as the Paris street-food classic: sugar and lemon juice. They also offer a breakfast menu and an assortment of salads including a classic chicken Caesar and a cranberry spinach salad with poppy seed dressing. Aside from the wallet-friendly eats they also boast some of the Valley's best coffee. Thanks to the free Wi-Fi, we may never have to leave.

  • Elevate Coffee House

2530 W. Happy Valley Rd. Ste. 1273 North Phoenix

    602-341-5480

In West Phoenix you might find the pickings a little slim as far as locally-owned coffee shops go, which is why people are especially grateful to have Elevate Coffee House in the neighborhood. The coffee house and lunch spot offers breakfast eats (think classic morning meals such as bagels, oatmeal, and a croissant sandwich) as well as lunch and dinner. Nosh on their Southwest Turkey sandwich or a Raspberry Turkey Havarti wrap before indulging in a sweet crepe for dessert. If you're feeling particularly international you could also opt for a savory crepe such as the Elevate Club, a turkey, ham and roast beef crepe that proves French fare doesn't have to be light. As far as drinks go they have a nearly endless selection of hot and cold coffee and espresso beverages as well as frappes, frozen cremes, smoothies and italián sodas. You can cuddle up comfortably in one of their cozy nooks knowing 10 cents from each cup of Joe served at Elevate goes to providing safe water for children in Africa.
