  • 21 Cakes

    7001 N. Scottsdale Rd., #175 North Scottsdale

    480-699-6220

The cupcake fad ain't over yet. At least not according to pastry chef Linda Schneider. Named after the glamorous Art Deco period, Schneider's upscale cupcakery in Scottsdale, decked out in marble and glass, features 12 different creations made each day from her family's recipes. Moist, light, and topped with an icing more sugary than creamy, the delicately sweet cherry and vanilla flavors are favorites, faring better than the breakfast and vanilla salted caramel varieties. At $3.35 each and smaller than many boutique cupcakes, these sweet indulgences are more special occasion than frequent eats, so make sure to enlist the help of the friendly counter folk to help direct you to the most popular kinds.

  • Amy's Baking Company

7366 E. Shea Blvd. North Scottsdale

    480-607-0677

Perhaps the Valley's most notorious restaurant, featured on British celebrity chef's reality show Kitchen Nightmares, Amy's is far better known for its irascible owners than it is the food coming out of the kitchen. That being said, the pastries in the case look spectacular.

  • Awesome Cookie Company

5025 N. Central Ave. Central Phoenix

    480-382-9295

With a name like Awesome Cookie Company, you'd expect nothing short of, well, awesome from a cookie. Luckily, the cookies deliver on the name, even though there are only two flavors available. The most popular option, the cranberry oatmeal, kind of tastes like a really fancy enlarged Cookie Crisp, which is baffling because it isn't a chocolate chip. Somehow, ACC has harnessed that sweet, crunchy goodness into an all-natural option. It's easy to become obsessed with the packaging, too, as the cookies are sold solely in cutesy mason jars with twine bows that run about $10 for the smaller option and $15 for the larger. Though the price is a little steep, the oatmeal cranberry cookies are well worth it as a sweet gift or an indulgence for yourself. You can buy a jar or two at Scottsdale's Bodega market, Phoenix's GreaterThan Coffee, and a few local farmers markets.

  • Azteca Kitchen & Bakery

    416 N. 7th Ave. Downtown Phoenix

    602-253-5864

At Azteca, the bakers are busy every day except Sunday, stocking the cases of the small takeout shop with multiple all-natural, preservative-free varieties of bunuelos. Selections vary, but usual offerings include pan dulces (sweet rolls and breads), empanadas (turnovers), galletas (cookies), orejas (puff pastry) and pan de muerto, a Day of the Dead specialty. If that weren't enough, this shop also cranks out homemade tortillas.
  • Back East Bagel Co

    1628 E. Southern Ave. #2 Tempe

    480-491-4222

Word of mouth is the key to success at this charming Tempe strip-mall cafe, and no wonder. The plain bagel here is a joy to eat on its own, almost like a fresh soft pretzel. While you'll surely find ex-New Yorkers lurking in line here, Back East Bagels brings in plenty of native Arizonans, too, with cheap, tasty sandwiches and an inviting seating area.

  • The Bakery PHX

1528 E. Bethany Home Rd. Central Phoenix

    480-499-0211

The Bakery PHX is not a trendy cupcake shop, though the bright, simple interior and handwritten signage are modern and stylish. It's also not a traditional spot, as it serves both freshly baked sourdough bread loaves as well as the shop's take on the Twinkie, which actually looks more like a Ho Ho on the outside. The best of the best from The Bakery PHX is easily the mini pies, though. Not just cute, these little treats come in different flavors like key lime, chocolate cream, and apple for about $8. The key lime specifically is a must-try, with a subtly tart, smooth key lime filling and decadently buttery graham cracker crust. Read our review.

  • Balkan Bakery

    1107 E. Bell Road, #16 North Phoenix

    602-996-4598

Mornings, in-the-know customers trickle into Balkan Bakery, inhaling the bready fragrance of its tiny room on Bell Road. Some get French-style rolls. Some get rope-like kifli. Some get dark twists of pretzels still hot from the oven. All seem to have an unspoken respect for Jasenko Osmic, the man behind that oven, who bakes, peals, and shapes dough with the endurance of an Olympic athlete. His prized baked good is the bourek, available in three styles; it's so central to Balkan Bakery that boureks have their own section of the menu. Osmic makes them in the style of Sarajevo, which his family fled in 1997. Shaped like a butterfly's tongue, the tight coils of baked homemade phyllo dough come from the oven warm and soft, rich and fragrant, pretzel-brown on top and utterly stuffed with a meaty or cheesy filling. The newly baked discs sit in a tiered display, steaming behind glass. Those who come for bread and pretzels often find, as they exit the shop, the toasted lip of a spinach bourek against their own. Quietly, Balkan Bakery's bourek is one of Phoenix's finest baked goods. New Normal: Indoor dining is not currently available, but Balkan Bakery offers zeljanica for takeout and curbside pickup.

  • Barb's Bakery

    2929 N. 24th St. East Phoenix

    602-957-4422

We can't think of a single reason to keep heading back to this popular, locally-owned bakery. But we can think of thirty-two reasons, among them Barb's signature carrot cake, spicy and moist and loaded with nuts. And the Devil's Food Chocolate, rich and dark and a real sweet-tooth favorite. Or the Pink Champagne cake, light and fluffy and a real nostalgic charmer for those of us who remember eating this at Hobo Joe's. Special icings and fondant make every one of these tasty cakes more delicious, not to mention pretty as a picture. And Barb's makes custom cakes for every occasion.

  • Bertha's Cafe

3134 E. Indian School Rd. East Phoenix

    602-955-1022

Whether this cute breakfast and lunch café in Phoenix is a dessert shop with an affordable savory side or a casual eatery with a sweet twist is more a question of semantics than of taste. Courtesy of Beth Goldwater (who is married to the grandson of the late five-term Arizona senator and 1964 presidential nominee), Bertha's serves up a tidy, affordable selection of simple and straightforward sandwiches and salads made with fresh ingredients and house made sauces. And thanks to a dessert case packed with homespun indulgences like thick chocolate brownies, decadent peanut butter cookies, and Goldwater's signature cheesecakes (some of the best in the Valley), a sweet ending -- or beginning -- to your meal is just a finger point away. • Bongiorno Bagels

    3107 S. Gilbert Road, #101 Gilbert

    480-588-8222

Who do you want making your bagels? At Bongiorno, you get a Culinary Institute of America grad and a former FDNY lieutenant and firehouse chef, both New York natives adhering to New York style. It's as good a bagel pedigree as you'll find in Arizona. Using a system that emulates the enigmatic H20 of the Big Apple, John Bongiorno and Ed Cancro kettle-boil bagels and then finish them in an old-school deck oven. All the right touches are there: chew, a whisper of fluff, seeds not only on the tops of sesame and everything, but on their undersides. As in New York, these bagels, when freshly made, are good enough that they should never see the inside of a toaster.

  • Carmel's Coffee & Bakery

    4233 E. Camelback East Phoenix

    480-626-0020

This Central Phoenix coffee house – located in a vintage 1940s house on Camelback Road in Arcadia – is a favorite for its warm, cozy interior, interesting artwork, and freshly brewed java (using Lux beans). But what has us returning again and again is the full menu of breakfast and lunch items. Carmel’s Coffee and Bakery does of course have classic baked goods like scones, muffins, and croissants, but it also serves omelets, open-faced tartines, breakfast burritos, classic breakfast plates with eggs and toast, sweet and savory crepes, French toast croissants with real maple syrup, and croissant sandwiches with bacon and egg. Breakfast is served all day, but lunch items like BBQ pulled pork sandwiches, mac and cheese muffins, grilled cheese, and quiche are added later in the day. When the weather permits, Carmel’s has plenty of patio space available to sit and savor your morning coffee or to recharge while enjoying a midday meal.

  • Casa Filipina Bakeshop

3531 W. Thunderbird Rd. North Phoenix

    602-942-1258

Since 2006, Casa Filipina owners Tony and Tess Menendez have been serving traditional Filipino food from this cozy West Valley restaurant. And though the savory offerings, including pancit bihon guisado, chicken adobo, and lechon kawali will satisfy your Filipino food craving, it’s the sweet side of things at which this restaurant excels. Don’t leave without a few of the plastic-wrapped ensaymadas; these rolls come topped with sugar, butter, and shredded cheese and make an excellent breakfast or mid-afternoon snack. The bakery case also offers Filipino rolls called pan de sal, Filipino-Chinese buns called siopao, and a decent selection of American desserts.

  • Chocolate Star Bakery

7132 E. Mercer Lane North Scottsdale

    480-556-0895

Our sweet tooth is grateful for this gourmet cookie house, which specializes in irresistible cookies for every sophisticated taste and occasion. Made from scratch daily with the finest ingredients, Chocolate Star's cookies are baked with premium chocolate, pure vanilla, farm fresh butter and eggs, and Ghirardelli semisweet chocolate. Once they're out of the oven, each and every cookie in every variety is sprinkled with edible, shimmering "stardust." Even if they weren't all shiny, we'd be mad for the Chocolate Cinnamon cookies, a yummy pairing of cinnamon and rich dark cocoa, and the Chocolate Star Paradise, a blend of chocolate chips, oatmeal, coconut, cinnamon and pecans. Chocolate Star truly shines!
