    3481 W. Frye Rd. Chandler

    480-398-3008

Fresh off the plane from Gotham, just started your long-distance subscription to the New York Times, and in desperate need of a bialy with a schmear? Perhaps you're peckish for a knish or a toasted bagel with a side of chopped liver? Chompie's has got you covered, pallie, like the isle of Manny-hanny with concrete. What else do your East Coast taste buds desire? A little chicken soup with kreplach? Chilled borscht with sour cream? Latkes with applesauce? A corned beef sammy with a pickle? Chompie's proffers these delicacies as well as more prosaic eats like meat loaf, tuna salad, turkey breast and so on. No wonder serious fressers call Chompie's their home away from home.

  • Gadzooks Enchiladas & Soup

3313 N. Seventh St. Central Phoenix

    602-279-5080

It starts out all PG-13 at Gadzooks as the tomato-based broth with standard-issue carrots, celery, and onion gets ladled into a clay pot, but the party kicks up a notch as you work your way down the assembly line. Toss in some melt-in-your-mouth, guajillo-braised short ribs and the creamiest cornbread, go bison and sautéed spinach, or double down on meat with roasted chicken and green chili pork shoulder. After getting doused in a hefty handful of cheese, it slides into the fire and emerges all hot and bothered and ready for the cold fixins'. You can keep it cool with vinaigrette slaw and pico or go for the hot salsa. If you’re feeling really naughty, top it with an over-easy egg and chunky guac.

  • Sweet Cakes Cafe

    21 W. Main St. Mesa

    480-461-9529

This unassuming storefront in downtown Mesa is home to some of the best baked goods in the Valley. The bakery and café, which cranks out simple but delectable treats, was even featured on TLC’s Best Food Ever as one of the Top 10 Most Bodacious Bakeries. A great breakfast, like cinnamon roll French toast or a basic egg and cheese sandwich, or lunch, like the chicken pecan salad sandwich with a side of homemade soup, can be had at this restaurant, but as the name suggests, sweets are what this shop does best. Try one of the giant chewy cookies stacked behind the counter by the dozens and you’ll be sold. Peanut butter M&M, oatmeal chocolate chip, oatmeal butterscotch, and crasin white chocolate pecan are just a few of the flavors you’ll find. Sweet Cakes Café also bakes delicious desserts like lemon bars, caramel pecan rolls, and five-layer brownies (coined the “Better Than Sex Brownie”).

All we had to hear were the words "Raspberry Lace Buttermilk Pie," and we were out the door and on our way to our favorite bakery, which also happens to serve some of the very best breakfast and lunch food in town, bar none. In the morning, we like the Taylor Ham and Egg Sandwich, which combines scrambled eggs, ham and Swiss cheese on a buttered Ciabatta. When we're feeling especially angry at our diet, we go straight for the Cinnamon Raisin Nut French Toast, which brings together whole wheat cinnamon raisin and nut bread and eggs with sweet, creamy butter and hot maple syrup like we've never known. If it's lunch we're after, we look no further than Wildflower's sandwiches, because they're served on fresh-baked Wildflower bread-the best in the land. Our favorite is the Roasted Sweet Potato Sandwich, made with roasted sweet potato, fresh mozzarella, fig confit, tomato, arugula, marinated fennel and balsamic vinaigrette on herb focaccia bread. No, we're not kidding. This sandwich actually exists, and it will change your life.
