  • Rocket Fizz

    13681 N. Litchfield Rd. Surprise

    602-942-3499

For a quick dose of nostalgia, take a peek inside this mom-and-pop soda and candy shop in Surprise. The brand is based in California, and the interior certainly has a laidback, beachy vibe, but the only location in Arizona is independently owned and operated. It’s a family-run shop, so don’t be surprised to be greeted and offered recommendations by one of the owners’ kids. There are sweets galore, including an impressive selection of salt water taffy flavors, hard-to-find imported candy bars like the British Yorkie and Kinder Bueno, and even wine-flavored gummies. Rocket Fizz also offers sugar in liquid form, and you could hem and haw all day before choosing from one of 600 types of soda pop. The brand even makes its own sodas in flavors like banana nut, black licorice, green apple jalapeno, marshmallow, and Shirley Temple. Or, pick from other rarities like Brain Wash and Fukola Cola.

  • Alebrije Neveria

    10171 N. 19th Ave., #7 North Phoenix

    602-577-0036

It’s easy to miss Alebrije Neveria, an unsuspecting strip mall spot on 19th Avenue north of Dunlap Avenue. The outside may be forgettable, but the inside is chic, with a blue-and-gold accent wall and long, inviting table for lingering and getting a great drink shot (these raspados are photogenic). Their menu goes beyond standard strawberry and tamarind to include chocolate, passion fruit, and horchata, a cinnamony sip topped with fresh-cut strawberries and walnuts. The elote bowls are also impressive so save room.

Twenty-four types of Italian gelato, made fresh daily, in a small store the size of your normal ice cream shop. They're big on flavor, though, probably the closest thing to real Italian gelato you'll get short of hopping the next plane to Milan. Try the coconut and the pistachio - they're out of this world. And Eye-tie flavors like zuppa inglese and frutti di bosco will have you on your knees declaring that Yahweh must drive a Ferrari, wear mousse in his hair and go by the handle "Marcello."

  • Asi Es La Vida

    3602 N. 24th St. East Phoenix

    602-955-2926

The cuisine at this casual-upscale Mexican restaurant in Central Phoenix is nearly as gratifying now as it was over 20 years ago, when then-owner and founder Moises Treves first brought his gourmet dishes celebrating the regions of Mexico to the Valley. Given its age, the building may seem a bit frayed, but inside, its softly lit rooms decorated with tables topped with white linen, paintings of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, and lazily spinning ceiling fans, make for an intimate place to unwind -- perhaps with a glass of sangria and outstanding dishes like an Acapulco-style shrimp cocktail, a heady soup, and outstanding signature plates of thinly sliced top sirloin, Veracruz-style fish, and enormous butterflied and garlicky shrimp you'd be forgiven for picking up and eating right out of their skins. • Barb's Bakery

    2929 N. 24th St. East Phoenix

    602-957-4422

We can't think of a single reason to keep heading back to this popular, locally-owned bakery. But we can think of thirty-two reasons, among them Barb's signature carrot cake, spicy and moist and loaded with nuts. And the Devil's Food Chocolate, rich and dark and a real sweet-tooth favorite. Or the Pink Champagne cake, light and fluffy and a real nostalgic charmer for those of us who remember eating this at Hobo Joe's. Special icings and fondant make every one of these tasty cakes more delicious, not to mention pretty as a picture. And Barb's makes custom cakes for every occasion.

If you’re a fruit lover, order the Summer Crunch, which has fresh strawberries and strawberry Pocky. Chocolate lover? Go for The Nutty Professor, which includes some Ferrero Rocher.

  • Chocolade van Brugge

4225 N. Marshall Way Central Scottsdale

    480-721-7363

This trendy chocolate shop justifies its uptown prices with the fact that its sweets are imported from Belgium. The house specialty, though, is the Liége waffles. Made with thick, yeast-leavened dough rather than a runny batter, they turn out a bread-like waffle that has balls of pearl sugar throughout. These caramelize in the dough as the waffle cooks, leaving a wonderful, crispy crust that gives way to a thick, sweet center. At Chocolade van Brugge, these waffles can be topped with chocolate or Nutella for a few extra bucks — but however you eat them, they’re magnificent.

  • Chocolate Star Bakery

7132 E. Mercer Lane North Scottsdale

    480-556-0895

Our sweet tooth is grateful for this gourmet cookie house, which specializes in irresistible cookies for every sophisticated taste and occasion. Made from scratch daily with the finest ingredients, Chocolate Star's cookies are baked with premium chocolate, pure vanilla, farm fresh butter and eggs, and Ghirardelli semisweet chocolate. Once they're out of the oven, each and every cookie in every variety is sprinkled with edible, shimmering "stardust." Even if they weren't all shiny, we'd be mad for the Chocolate Cinnamon cookies, a yummy pairing of cinnamon and rich dark cocoa, and the Chocolate Star Paradise, a blend of chocolate chips, oatmeal, coconut, cinnamon and pecans. Chocolate Star truly shines!

  • Chompie's Deli Restaurant, Bagels, Bakery & Catering

    3481 W. Frye Rd. Chandler

    480-398-3008

Fresh off the plane from Gotham, just started your long-distance subscription to the New York Times, and in desperate need of a bialy with a schmear? Perhaps you're peckish for a knish or a toasted bagel with a side of chopped liver? Chompie's has got you covered, pallie, like the isle of Manny-hanny with concrete. What else do your East Coast taste buds desire? A little chicken soup with kreplach? Chilled borscht with sour cream? Latkes with applesauce? A corned beef sammy with a pickle? Chompie's proffers these delicacies as well as more prosaic eats like meat loaf, tuna salad, turkey breast and so on. No wonder serious fressers call Chompie's their home away from home.

  • Coffee Rush

    1555 N. Gilbert Rd. #107 Gilbert

    480-507-0930

The staff at Chandler's Coffee Rush is relaxed and friendly, so much so that despite the name it's hard to feel rushed when you stop in. If you're a regular, the staff will even start your favorite chai or Caramel Nut Latte before you even get to the register. The pretty man-made lake out back makes the this a great place to chill out with a Mocha Frost and work on your laptop or catch up with friends. Coffee Rush's menu is basic; they simply have quality coffee available in a few dozen regular and sugar-free flavors, offered hot, iced, or frozen. If you're craving a nosh to go with your java, don't miss out on the Greek owners' specialty — gooey, sweet baklava with walnuts or pistachios.
  • The Coffee Shop

    3000 E. Ray Rd. Gilbert

    480-279-3144

This upscale coffee joint is housed inside a re-purposed maintenance garage. It sounds a little random but its really not considering that The Coffee Shop sits on the grounds of Agritopia, the urban farm oasis in Gilbert. Inside the coffee house you'll find a spacious place with great natural lighting. Order up one of their many specialty coffee drinks – might we suggest the Black and White, which comes with espresso, milk, white and milk chocolate and whipped cream – and enjoy the indoor seating or the outdoor patio. If you make a trip out to this spot it's worth the extra calories to pick up one of their famous cupcakes, made from scratch and always as pretty to look at as they are eat. They also have a breakfast menu, fresh pastries and plenty of sandwich options to please even the most picky pallets.

  • Cold Stone Creamery

1949 E. Camelback Rd. East Phoenix

    602-248-9250

Phoenix diners who have never managed to master Starbucks' sizing system will find Cold Stone Creamery's similarly challenging; the ice-cream chain eschews small, medium, and large in favor of "Like It," "Love It," and "Gotta Have It" sizes. Once the portion is picked, patrons can concoct their own creations from super-premium ice cream flavors like vanilla, cake batter, chocolate, strawberry and coffee, plus a kaleidoscope of toppings: nuts, brownies, cookies, candy, and even chunks of pie crust. The Creamery's ice cream engineers will scoop your selections onto a frozen slab and deftly fold in the toppings, ensuring that you won't have to hunt very far with your spoon for another hunk of cookie dough. Voice Places has Cold Stone Creamery down cold.

  • Coup Des Tartes

1725 E. Osborn Rd. East Phoenix

    602-212-1082

Coup des Tartes may be in a new location, but the French-styled neighborhood bistro retains much of the spirit of the original. Now located in a historic 1922 brick bungalow, the restaurant has retained much of its cozy appeal. The menu specializes in old-school bistro classics, including a fine take on filet mignon served with Yukon gold mashed potatoes and spinach. A slightly more exotic house specialty, Moroccan lamb shank, served with couscous and stone fruits and veggies, is a bit on the tame side. There’s a pastry chef on duty, so it’s worth leaving room for classic desserts like the house berry tarte and apple butter upside down cake. The restaurant also offers lunch service on Tuesdays through Fridays, where you can enjoy classic Parisian café staples, including a fine croque monsieur.

  • Creamistry

4325 E. Indian School Rd., Suite 110 East Phoenix

    602-595-4698

We'll admit that the whole liquid nitrogen ice cream thing is probably a gimmick. If so, count us in on all the gimmicks, because Creamistry ice cream tastes fresh, sweet, and rich. There are many flavor options and mix-ins, and you can even get it dairy-free. This is something we can get used to, so we hope ice cream "created" with liquid nitrogen isn't just a fad that goes the way of fro-yo and (we're guessing) boba. We'd like to keep visiting Creamistry for a long time to come.
