  • Caffe Boa

    398 S. Mill Ave. Tempe

    480-968-9112

For first dates and graduation dinners, Tempe’s Caffe Boa is a staple. This long-standing Mill Avenue restaurant is the perfect contrast to the bustling bars and clubs just steps away. Both an Italian restaurant and wine bar, it is open for brunch, lunch, happy hour and dinner. Make sure to try the outstanding pastas, such as a block of lasagna resting in a pool of cream-tinted bolognese or the Ravioli Zucca, filled with butternut squash and topped with toasted hazelnuts and sage swimming in a garlic butter sauce. Complete your meal with a creative cocktail, pour of wine or a flight of Rakija, a double-distilled fruit brandy popular in Serbia and throughout the Balkans, for something a little different.

  • Clancy's Pub

4432 N. Miller Rd. Central Scottsdale

    480-990-8797

The American Midwest meets the Irish cliffs at Clancy's Pub. Banners proclaiming loyalty to the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Omaha Nighthawks, and Green Bay Packers share space alongside Guinness clovers and Killian's flags. Night owls recline on green leather stools, watching Bruce Campbell on Burn Notice while sipping draught beers and snacking on burger specials. In keeping with a Midwest sensibility, the vibe here is humble and unassuming, though the right game brings out the cheers and whoops from the blue-collar crowd. Saint Patrick's Day emerald clothing is certainly welcome, but no one is going to differentiate between that and Packers green, and Cornhuskers red is certainly okay, too.
  • Connolly's Sports Grill

2605 W. Carefree Highway North Phoenix

    623-879-5997

Like North Phoenix itself, Connolly's Sports Grill might leave you with the subconscious urge to stretch out a little. It's not that it's big, just more open than you might be used to — an airy outparcel made artificially sports-bar-dark with blackout curtains. Well-spaced tables are all that stand between the entrance on one side and a well-stocked bar on the other; mounted on all four walls are big, clear TVs, seemingly one to a table. There might not be a lot of history or character in a North Phoenix outparcel, but that also means there's no history or character getting between you, your meal, and your favorite team.

  • Delice Bistro

    690 S. Mill Ave. Tempe

    480-656-8847

The folks at this Mill Avenue, European-flavored bistro have created a menu more stylish and complicated than one would expect to find in a bistro that caters mostly to ASU students and visitors to the next-door movie multiplex. But, like a lot of ambitious bistros, Delice (pronounced Da-lees) has yet to arrive at greatness. This pâtisserie serves marvelous baked goods and pastries, and its breakfast foods are highly flavored and neatly made. Baked goods and hot, strong coffee are a staple here, as are paninis and crepes both savory and sweet. Read our review.

  • The Dubliner Irish Pub & Restaurant

3841 E. Thunderbird Rd. North Phoenix

    602-867-0984

Despite the name, this north central Phoenix pub isn’t for Joyce scholars. Here, you’re far more likely to encounter UFC fans shooting Jameson than bookish types sipping Beamish. But that’s not to say the place is lacking in history. Established in 1985 by Seamus McCaffrey (namesake of the popular downtown Phoenix pub), The Dubliner is said to be Phoenix’s first pub to serve Guinness on tap. It still does, of course, along with Harp and Smithwick’s. The food menu features Irish fare such as chicken with Guinness gravy and a side of soda bread, Irish beef stew, and — our favorite — Jameson chocolate bread pudding.

You haven't eaten Asian until you've had a Tottie Roll, a fried pork roll wrapped in lettuce and mint leaves, and the house specialty at this extra-popular Asian Fusion restaurant. Named for Chef Tottie Kaya, who trained as a professional chef in childhood, these rolls are the talk of culinary circles and the reason that people drive from all over town to this newest location in Tottie's local chain. Diners also crave Tottie's Kang Keow Wan (Green Curry Chicken) with mushrooms, as well as the super-spicy Thai Basil over white or brown rice. Don't leave without trying the house-made coconut ice cream and the fried plantains for dessert; you'll be glad you did.

  • Shakespeare's British Pub & Restaurant

1744 S. Val Vista Dr. Mesa

    480-507-7827

We stopped in for a Newcastle Ale and ended up staying for dinner-and what a dinner! Moules Mariniere: mussels with onions, steamed in white wine and herb liquor. We'll never recover, it was so tasty. We went back for a more traditional British dinner that started with Scotch Eggs (hardboiled and wrapped in sausage, then deep fried) followed by a sirloin-stuffed Cottage Pie with onions and carrots and topped with cheddar-mashed potatoes and a helping of fresh veggies. Next time we plan to try the traditional Yorkshire Pudding, which we hear is the best in town. Meantime, cheerio, old bean-we're counting the days until we can return to this bit of Britain.

    4815 E. Main St. #16 Mesa

    480-830-4244

Everything in Zur Kate has a German flair, not just the authentic cuisine. The walls are covered with paintings, flags, and other memorabilia from the Old Country, and there's always German music, whether on the stereo or from a live band. Expect a selection of imported German beer on tap for pretty good prices.
