  • Alzohour Restaurant

    7814 N. 27th Ave. North Phoenix

    602-433-5191

Alzohour remains, to the best of our knowledge, the Valley’s only Moroccan restaurant, so we can consider ourselves fortunate that it’s as vibrant and delicious as it is. Zhor Saad has run the restaurant portion of her dining/market/clothing boutique almost single-handedly since 2008, scurrying between the front and back of house as she transitions in a flash between gracious host and talented line cook. Bring a little patience and a titanic appetite, because when the food finally hits the table, it’s a sensory feast. Popular Arabic starters such as orange-scented hummus and baba ghanouj pave the way for steaming tagines loaded with saffron-heavy lamb or fresh fish braised in tomatoes and olives. Mounds of delicate couscous topped with tender meats and vegetables are always a fine choice. But Saad’s bastilla — a savory-sweet phyllo pie filled with chicken and ground nuts topped with powdered sugar and cinnamon — is a unique Moroccan showstopper that is not to be missed.

Come hungry: The food court is home to a location of Paik's Noodles, a popular Chinese-Korean chain noodle shop, along with metro Phoenix's first location of Tous Les Jours, a popular French-Asian bakery cafe chain.

  • Carniceria Los Amigos

4705 E. Southern Ave. South Phoenix

    602-470-1111

This friendly south Phoenix carnicería offers an excellent selection of high-quality meats. The meat case is packed tightly with a neatly labeled assortment of Mexican sausages (including homemade longaniza and chorizo), beef, chicken, various steak cuts, pork, tripe, and pretty much everything else you need to make carne asada, menudo, pozole, or whatever happens to be on the menu. Carniceria Los Amigos also carries harder-to-find meats, including godorniz (quail) and buche (pig stomach). Even if you're not planning a family barbecue, you may want to swing by for a quick taco or burrito infusion. The carnicería sells some excellent carryout barbacoa, carne asada, carnitas, and pollo asado.

    602-274

This low-key market sells the obligatory specialty items like cheeses and fancy olive oils, but its sprawling assortment of sandwiches, salads, and ready-made dishes from the deli cases are the main attraction. Pick up some homemade soup and a made-to-order sandwich, or splurge on homey entrees like sausage lasagna or pork tenderloin with apricot-Creole mustard glaze.

  • Dolce Vita Italian Grocer

    5251 E. Brown Rd. #103 Mesa

    480-641-8482

This unassuming Italian grocery and deli in east Mesa is the creation of Walter Bergamaschi and Marti Printy, owners of the adjoining Gelato Dolce Vita. And it’s the couple’s penchant for premium ingredients that makes their grocery (if you’re shopping) and Northern Italian-based eatery (if you’re dining in) so distinctive. Pick up a boutique olive oil, balsamic vinegar, or marmalade from the Italian Alps, or give into a purchase of rarely seen cheeses and cured meats. If you’re staying for a bite to eat, don’t miss the classic bruschetta, stellar sandwiches such as the Dolomiti made with smoked prosciutto, asiago cheese, and arugula, and housemade ricotta and spinach ravioli drizzled in a silky butter and sage sauce. • Imperial Market & Deli

737 E. Glendale Ave. North Phoenix

    602-285-6999

In 2010, this Jewish market and deli, which has served excellent imported meats since 2006, opened a dining room for sit-down table service. The large menu includes all the delicatessen favorites and many more sandwiches, including shwarma, kebabs, falafel, freshly ground burgers, and schnitzel, in addition to entree-size platters of stuffed cabbage rolls, roasted chicken, salmon, and even a $26 rib eye steak. Most of it tastes very good, and that's the good news. The bad news: The low-energy dining room can be downright stifling and the prices (most sandwiches are $10 or more) seem a bit high, given the dining experience. Your best bet at Imperial may be hitting the deli for a pastrami on rye to go.

  • Luci's Healthy Marketplace

1590 E. Bethany Home Rd. Central Phoenix

    602-773-1339

Luci's Healthy Marketplace specializes in organic and natural foods - sort of like a pint-sized Sprouts, minus the produce department. It's bright and airy inside, with a stylish retro-modern theme, a coffee bar, and a Viking Test Kitchen, where they offer cooking demonstrations. For a neighborhood market, Luci's is pretty unique. Sure, you can find Queen Creek Olive Mill's extra-virgin olive oil, gourmet stuffed olives, and assorted tapenades at AJ's and plenty of other places around the Valley, but it's so much more fun to buy them straight from the source. While you're here, at the far southeastern reaches of Queen Creek, sample the company's full product line, take a tour of the facilities, and be sure to bring an appetite. • Smeeks

2502 E. Camelback Rd. East Phoenix

    602-279-0538

Forget your notions of what a candy store should be. We’re not saying remakes of retro candy aren’t delicious, but the shop that sells them doesn’t need to be stuck in time. Smeeks, “a sweet little shop for sweet little folks,” is an update on the candy stores of our grandparents’ generation. While you’re sure to find old timey treats like Abba-Zaba and C. Howard’s Violet, owner Georganne Bryant, who also operates Frances Vintage boutique, scours the country to stock Smeeks’ shelves with modern-day delights. The candy collection includes local treasures like Tracy Dempsey Originals and Goodytwos Toffee, as well as out-of-state imports including handmade Hammond’s chocolate bars in flavors like More S’mores and PB&J Sandwich and artisanal selections from Whimsical Candy like handmade sea salt caramels and the three-day labor of love called La-Dee-Dahs. Smeeks also stays on top of seasonal specialties, like Pumpkin Patch Pop Rocks in the fall and heart-shaped Valentine’s candies in February.
