  • Broken Rice

    66 S. Dobson Road, #41 Mesa

    480-668-5959

Com Tam Thuan Kieu, a homey spot at Mekong Plaza, is a place to gorge on enormous plates of food, most of which run $6.99. Incredibly, the menu has more than two hundred different items -- rice dishes, noodle soups, and rice vermicelli dishes -- but if you look closely, you'll see that every conceivable combination of toppings constitutes its own dish. Moist grilled chicken, savory-sweet charbroiled beef ribs, and tender marinated pork are a few good bets. Read our review.

  • Dozo Izakaya

    440 W. Warner Rd. #104 Tempe

    480-785-4938

In Japan, an izakaya is a drinking establishment that serves small plates of Japanese comfort foods. Dozo Izakaya really delivers on the food portion of this concept, with a menu of grilled small plates such as sunagimo, or chicken gizzard; hotaru-ikayaki, or baby squid; and a house favorite, tako-yaki, also known as fried octopus balls (no, really — try them!). Japanese sweet wines and soft drinks are available, as are more traditional noodle- and meat-based dishes and bowls. Spices run hot but can be tamed to your liking.
