  • Maya

7333 E. Indian Plaza Central Scottsdale

    480-625-0528

Either by design or happenstance, the cluster of bars and clubs making up Scottsdale’s most popular portion of its downtown entertainment district on Saddlebag Trail is centered around Maya. It makes sense, considering that come the weekend, most clubgoers are likely heading to the combination dayclub and nightclub. Aimed squarely at the young-and-beautiful crowd, it’s been a spring and summer destination for sunshine-soaked swim parties within its 17,600 square foot pool area, which features fancy cabanas and daybeds, the Valley’s biggest LED video wall, a taco stand, three bars, and a stage for EDM artists both local and national. The indoor nightclub, however, packs ‘em in year-round for bottle-popping fun and dancing centered around a vortex-like dance floor awash in trippy colors and tipsy revelers.

  • Bar Smith

130 E. Washington St. Central Phoenix

    602-456-1991

Creativity abounds on both floors of this bi-level beatshack located in downtown Phoenix. Bottle-tossing mixologists like Chase Crain show off their furious flairtending skills and whip up handcrafted artisan cocktails at the downstairs bar. Meanwhile, talented turntablists work the wheels of steel from an elevated platform on the rooftop lounge as urbanites and heavenly-looking honeys mix and mingle with their drinks. Street artists like Lalo Cota are also known to create one-of-a-kind murals on a large chalkboard that occupies one wall, turning Bar Smith into an impromptu gallery of sorts. Be sure to grab a picture of their efforts before last call, as its proprietors tend to erase the creation at the end of the night. The place serves lunch and dinner as well, focusing on American comfort food that goes well with alcohol, from a roasted barbecue pork sandwich and spicy chicken wings to old fashioned pot pie. Stop by for a midday meal or a casual bite before the game.

  • Charlie's Phoenix

727 W. Camelback Rd. Central Phoenix

    602-265-0224

Charlie’s is a slice of Phoenix gay bar history that has huddled along Camelback Road just west of Seventh Avenue since its debut in 1984. In those days, the “lil bitty ol’ pissant country place” and dance hall opened by John King (co-founder of the International Gay Rodeo Association) was aimed at gay urban cowboys and country music fans. As times and interests changed (and competition increased), so did Charlie’s. Today, the place boasts a larger dance floor, an even bigger parking lot, a taco truck out front, an outdoor patio with two bars and bleacher seating in the back, and a wide cross-section of the entire LGBT community. Charlie’s events calendar is just as diverse. Drag performances, bingo games, Latin and country dance nights, and karaoke are some of its most popular activities. It's also famous for its after-hours weekend dance parties.

  • Denim & Diamonds

    7336 E. Main St. Mesa

Eric Church's "Drink in My Hand" tends to rile the crowd up and incite activity at Denim & Diamonds on weekends, so brace yourself, buckaroo, for a tornado of two-steppin' and hollered sing-alongs when the chartbuster blares out here. Ditto for any of the other party-hearty new-country hymns that dominate the playlist. The Wrangler-clad masses at this barn-size Mesa megaclub do their damnedest to live up to the rip-roaring standard set forth by such anthems during nightly bacchanals of beer and barbecue on Thursdays through Saturdays.

  • El Capri

2135 E. Van Buren St. Central Phoenix

    602-244-0551

For most of the week, this east-side discoteca remains cold and dark, hidden behind a chain-link fence and locked up tighter than Fort Knox. On Friday and Saturday nights, however, the place comes alive with colored lights, hundreds of dancers, and Latin beats. The interior is home to a rollicking sea of dancing humanity, including plenty of caballeros y damas. Though the bar offers good selection of tequilas and south-of-border beers, the focus of El Capri is more on dancing than drinking. A steady stream of bachata, banda, and cumbia is pumped out by the DJs, while norteño bands occasionally perform. Gentlemen typically sport sharp cowboy garb and ostrich-skin boots, while ladies tend toward tight dresses, low-cut blouses, and skintight jeans. Even if you don't get to bailar with a bonita babe by night's end, chances are you'll eventually run into her mingling about or at the Mexican food joint down the street.

  • El Hefe Super Macho Taqueria

    640 S. Mill Ave. Tempe

    480-257-2797

The Tempe spinoff of this “super macho taqueria” features everything that its sister location in Scottsdale is famous for – from the array of eight signature tacos, Sonoran-inspired “Hefe Hot Dogs,” and potent bebidas – only with double the floorspace. That means there’s twice as much room for the lunch and dinner crowds, as well as everyone who comes out at night for the frenetic and often packed fiestas that feature waitresses dancing on the bars, sombreros and confetti poppers everywhere, wall-to-wall electro music, and a nonstop streaming videos on HDTVs, and dudes dressed in Zebra costumes. It’s muy loco, to say the least.

  • Gypsy Bar

50 W. Jefferson St. Central Phoenix

    602-732-5490

Like other flashy downtown Phoenix nightspots, Gypsy Bar comes alive with light, sound, movement and color after sundown, with life emanating from both its lustrous, LED-laden in-house dance club and the adjacent arcade teeming with more than 40 state-of-the-art video games. Inside this second-story adult playground next to CityScape’s Lucky Strike, the thrum of electronic beats wrought by DJs performing between a pair of HD video screens blends with the electronic bleeps from skeeball machines, redemption games, and two-player interactive arcade contraptions like Guitar Hero and 2 Fast 2 Furious. At the center of this audio-visual maelstrom is a three-sided bar and dining area, where you can score street tacos, short rib sliders, flatbread pizzas and other New American small plates, as well as any of 30 specialty cocktails, in-between getting your dance on or game on.

  • Karamba

1724 E. McDowell Rd. Central Phoenix

    602-254-0231

The expansive, colorfully lit dance floor at this gay dance club is almost always packed with bodies, whether it's boys dancing with boys, gals getting down with other gals, or various other combinations. Although the crowd and the music here leans Latino, the welcoming space is home to a diverse crowd during frenzied weekend events, when folks dance until dawn. Monday night karaoke, rotating theme nights and drag shows keep the party going throughout the week.

  • The Mint

7373 E. Camelback Rd. Central Scottsdale

    480-947-6468

The crown jewel of Les and Diane Corieri's local nightlife empire celebrates avarice and monetary excess in grand fashion. The couple spent a pretty penny to create an affluent oasis, which -- fittingly enough -- is situated inside an old bank. Clubgoers enjoy high-end cocktails and cuisine created by chef Johnny Chu and dance music from talented turntablists. High-tech touches like a crystal and LED cube hanging over the bar and illuminated rafters light up both the dance floor and heist-inspired artwork decorating the place.

  • Monarch Theatre

122 E. Washington St. Central Phoenix

    602-456-1991

Patrons of The Monarch Theatre seem to frequently contract dance fever whenever beats begin blasting out of its in-house wall of sound. Each victim at this downtown Phoenix dance emporium has their own individual symptoms: some folks start to shimmy, others begin to bounce, while the rest wind up merely pumping fists or bobbing heads as fast as the BPM will allow. The diversity of boogaloos being busted withing the confines of its 7,000-square-foot dance floor tends to encompass a wide variety of electronic dance music during any particular week. If it’s a UK Thursday event, you can expect a skull-shaking auditory assault of dubstep, glitch, or drum ‘n’ bass. When the Solstice crew puts up a special event, expect hours of progressive or deep house. Touring DJs that visit also bring laptops and hard drive full of everything from electro-house and trance to psychedelic, nu-disco, and other atmospheric jams. If anyone’s beat their feet into submission, however, various booths and posh seating opposite of the bar is waiting.

  • Oceans Seven

    1420 N. Scottsdale Rd. Tempe

    480-797-6233

Oceans Seven is the latest identity of a Scottsdale spot that has been hosting hip-hop hootenannies and Latin nights for more than a decade. In the late '90s, it was known as CBNC, a major hot spot that earned a serious reputation as a place to spy such celebs as Busta Rhymes, Beyoncé, 50 Cent, and Britney Spears. And though the name has changed, its game remains the same. Its still a prime place for high-volume partying, offering three distinct rooms with separate bars and dance floors, as well as a variety of VIP areas. Oceans Seven boasts a thunderous sound system that pounds out plenty of beats, including mixes of glammy R&B, high-energy street rap, old school jams, and hot reggae riddims. The typical crowd here skews toward urban club types and stylishly refined folks opening their wallets for premium bottles and champagne. In addition to the bubbly, tequila shots and mixed drinks with generous amounts of vodka are some of the preferred fuels for those engaging in nighttime fun.
